Having scientifically determined the best turret design by gluing on a load of promising-looking bit and then ripping them off again when they didn't work, I now have the basic structure of the turret together. Next step is the curvy bits, which are not simple.

The donor kits are amazingly crappy. I had to re-engineer the gun mounting just to get the trunnion height down to something not-totally-ridiculous. The Marders have a rear hull plate with totally ficticious detail and NO rear ramp... :blink:

that's because they engineered the kits for whiffers to hack about & knew that you wanted a rear-engined beast so that something "interesting" could be mounted in the front :)

The irony of it is that TG's tank actually DOES have a rear ramp door, so if I'd done this with 1/35th Tamiya models, I'd be a little happier, but a lot poorer.

I've been tempted to do the movie version once or twice but just couldn't pull the trigger. All the bits are easily available....

Well the back end of an old Yank car might be a bit hard to source in a compatible scale...

The comic version changed to (kinda) match the movie but has continued evolving since (i.e. all the different artists want to do it their way...

) It struck me that you could do something like the modern one by using a 1/24th Lancia Stratos rally car body (which I'm convinced is the inspiration behind all versions' light arrays) cut down to the sills and fitted with a heavily modified 1/35th scale M-47 or Walker Bulldog turret. Sadly Tamiya Lancias go for silly money these days.

The only Stratos Tamiya did is the one-off Group 5 turbo car. Fujimi did a full-detail
Stratos, but they stuffed up the body dimensions (it's too big) and contours. The
Hasegawa series of kits are the best to do both the road and rally variants. The Stratos
is an all time favourite so I have the Fujimi and Hasegawa versions of the road car. The
Fujimi errors are glaring when placed next to the Hasegawa.

Off topic as I know this is about the style and look of the Stratos being a good likeness for Tank Girls tank but I have personally always preferred the Lancia Delta Intergrale

Appears it was a reissue of an ESCI rebox of an old Japanese kit, and evidently the original
Revell kit was a rebox of the Otaki kit. Later Revell Germany releases are a rebox of the
Hasegawa kit.

A 1/12 Stratos was also produced by Otaki, since reissued by Doyusha.

Really? I always thought that if you took the badges off it and parking it in a line of Golf GTIs you'd never find it again....

The Stratos still looks unique and futuristic even today.

Just did the maths and a 1/35th M41 is only 12mm longer than a 1/24th Stratos, so it's definately a possibility.

So ya wouldn't be out much if it got stuffed up.
