Chimera
« on: July 04, 2012, 05:50:19 AM »
Just ordered a P-51 and F-16 to have a crack at making the forums signiture profile.  ;)

Just a few questions.....,

1. Can I? Or is this someones work who may get a bit upset seeing it turned into plastic?

2. Has this been done before?

3. Which helicopter was used for the rotors and engine bay?

The profile is known as the Chimera and is the work of Chris (aka coops213) who used the assistance of Damian (aka damian) and based upon a sketch I did that was based upon a suggestion by Jon (aka jcf).

That said, let me answer your questions:

  • Go for it!!!  I have been hoping someone would have a go.  I'm sure the other people involved would fully agree.
  • It hasn't been done in plastic before as far as I know.
  • I will have to double check.  I think it may be AH-64 rotor blades with a 'mast' just shaped to blend in to the fuselage as best as possible.

Ok, so the 1/72 scale F-16 and P-51 are on their way. In the end I opted for a 1/144 Chinook kit for the rotor assembly so only 3 blades on this one now.  :)

I think I going to build this one in flight as well as trying to figure out the u/c positioning is giving me a headache....  ???

Cheers!  But I thought it had 'XH162' written  all over it?  ;D :-\ ;D

Nice model to build - realy just fell together like it was meant to be.

Take one Airfix Mig 21, and assemble the fuselage as normal, the nose from an Airfix Mosquito, the missiles from an F101 Voodoo, the glove pylons from an F14, a small round drum shape, and whatever suitably sized rotor blades from whatever toy helicopter you can find (mine has folding blades - bonus!)

Then trim down the wingtips to the outer fences, use one of the pylons to mount the drop tank over the engine bay, then fit SNEB rocket pods to the wingtips.  Place a spare afterburner on the exhaust, then cut the Mosquito nose to fit snugly onto the spine of the Mig, and cut a hole to fit the drum shape into.  Then glue the base of the rotor hub to the top of the drum shape, and slot it into the Mosquito nose.  Job done!

Thanks all for your input, plenty to think about them as the kits haven`t shown yet.....  :(

Think my main problem wil be blending the vertical oblong fuselage to the horizontal flat fuselage of the F-16....  :-\

So the first cuts have now taken place and my initial thoughts are that while I would love to make this as true to form shown, there are some areas that may well need to be modified due to the actual physical aspects of both kits.

As you can see I`m thinking about replacing the P-51`s intake for the F-16`s. This is simply because it may be easier to intergrate the two sections. I have also cut that V shape on the top of the F-16 kit to remove the slight incline you get at that section. I have also taken the rear engine nacelle off the Chinook and preping that for construction. That so far, has been the easy bit.

Of course, I`m not really sure what to do with the bits I don`t need now, but I`m thinking along the lines of James Bond for some reason.......

You're off to a magnificent start and the F-16 nose grafted on the P-51 tail is a nice bonus!

Building one chimera would seem quite the project. Building two is almost balmy!

Spent a bit more time tonight with the cutters and scalpel trimming some of the offending areas in detail.

Forgive the makeshift stand and masking tape holding it all together, but this shows you the approx layout of the design and as you can see I kept the F-16`s intake instead of the rather small one from the P-51. (That was a bit of jiggery pokery I dont want to repeat I can tell you).  :o

Your not wrong Tophe...  ;)

A few pictures of the progress over the last 24 hours.

First on the agenda was to file down part of the intake fitting to get the right angle and a nice solid foundation to join the fuselages together.

The front end...., well...., whats left of the P-51 was completed.

Then I added some sprue to add a bit of strengh, which now seems quite apt considering this forums name.

And last but not least, the joining of two kits. It seems to have gone well so far...., but boy are there some bigs holes to fill.......  :o

If that`s the case, then I need to work on a stand.. Good job I have a lump of 2x4 and a coat hanger...  ;)

Another profile update. Light blue undersides added, prop on, missiles on and added a wash for some weathering effect. (Don`t want it to look too clean now do we). Had a set back with the rotors, one snapped off so glad the Chinook runs on two. Decals will be next, followed by the rotor and then I need to work on the stand.
