Cobra Company - Closed for Business NFI
« on: December 24, 2012, 06:41:49 AM »
Cobra Company offers a variety of resin and multi-media products in 1:144th, 1:72nd, 1:48th, 1:35th, and 1:32nd scale.

While this is not exactly an in-box review of the Cobra Company resin merchandise the links to each item provide an image of sufficient size to allow you to see for yourself what the product looks like and I doubt I could do any better with my cell phone camera here at home.

As far as the whole purchasing experience goes I am very satisfied with the prompt delivery of my order in a matter of days that is on par with my past experiences purchasing on-line from Sprue Brothers, who as you know are very good at sending out the order the same day the order is placed.  Customer service results will also vary with where you are located and for those of us that live in North America certainly benefit from this while those customers located in other countries will probably not experience these same results.

I have no afilliation with Chris Miller or Cobra Company and post this as a satisfied customer with the desire to make others aware of this product line for their own modeling projects.

My recent acquisitions from Cobra Company include the following items with links to each product at Cobra Company:

S-58T Conversion Set for the Revell UH-34/CH-34 (48029) This is also available in 1:72nd scale at this link for the Italeri and Revell Germany kit.  With the new Gallery/Trumpeter H-34 now available it may be possible to use this conversion on the new kit if you wish to model something other than a stock H-34 Choctaw/Sea Horse/Sea Bat.

F-105D Rolling Thunder Weapons Set (48019) The fuel tank is nice but what got me interested in this detail set were the M118 3000 pound (1360.7 kg) general purpose bomb shapes that have not been offered by any other company in any scale or medium.  Before CC it was make it on your own and results will vary depending on skill and abilities.  M118 was carried by other aircraft such as the A-4, F-4 and A-6 so you have other options for this particular weapon.  The fuel tank can also be adapted for use on the H-53 if you are not happy with the parts that are included with the Revell CH-53 kit you could use a pair of these resin shapes and have a quartet of M118 shapes for other projects (Win-Win) :)

These three weapons sets are a bit redundant as they all contain the AT-6 Spiral ATGM but I finally decided it was time to get one of each set just to see what could be done to maybe use these things on other models that are not Mi-24 Hinds.
Mi-24 Weapons Set 1 (48021) 80mm rocket pods and AT-6 ATGM
Mi-24 Weapons Set 2 (48022) Munitions dispensers/cluster bombs, gun pods, and AT-6 ATGM
Mi-24 Weapons Set 3 (48023) Gun pods, cannon pods, and AT-6 ATGM

MH-53J Pave Low Conversion kit for the Revell CH-53 kit (48024) The kit includes a new nose, fuel tanks, FLIR turret, sensors, IR jammers, ECM antennae and spotlights, pretty much everything you need to modify the Revell kit or if you are feeling frisky you could create a what-if MH-53E. :)
I have had both the original conversion kit produced by Mike Bishop/MB Models/Hi-Flight and the later Cobra Company MH-53 conversion in the past.  The original MH-53 conversion and master was done by Mike Bishop.  These same masters and molds found their way to Chris Miller/Cobra Company.  The only difference between the original conversion and this later release is that the fuel tanks are now two piece assemblies.  The original fuel tanks were cast as one complete unit and all you had to add on were the fins.  I rather liked the original tanks but that conversion is now in Australia some place waiting to be built with the Revell CH-53 that went with it.  My loss and his gain but I needed the money at the time so it was the only rational choice to make and let it go.  Aside from the fuel tank being two part in the later release all of the other parts are the same and just as good now as they were in the original conversion from Mike Bishop.

MH-53J and MH-53M Interior Detail set (48048) includes the "pizza rack" electronics bay that sits in the troop compartment behind the cockpit bulkhead and a bunch of other details that make the MH different from the rest of the herd.

MH-53 Weapons Package (48049) M134 Miniguns, M2 HB Browning .50 machine guns, flexible ammunition chutes, ammunition magazines and all of the necessary mounting hardware for any H-53, H-60, and some versions of the H-1.  Or you could use your imagination and try to fit some of this on an Italeri V-22 which would look nice with a ramp mounted weapon.  What about an upgraded H-34 Choctaw with the S-58 turbine conversion or a Westland Wessex with one of these weapons mounted in the door?

ALQ-147 V1 IR Jammer for the Roden OV-1 Mohawk (48047) Something that was seen on a lot of Mohawks prior to retiring the aircraft from service.  JP fueled IR jammer hat burned fuel to create a distracting heat source.  Have no idea how the thing worked but a version of this IR jammer was also carried on the AC-130 and possibly the MC-130 where it was attached directly to the bottom of the very large fuel tanks mounted under the wings.

MH-60L DAP Weapons Set (48034) for the Academy kit but I suspect it could be used on pretty much any H-60 kit in 1:48th scale or something completely different if you are looking for a big gun to arm your next helicopter project.  You can not go wrong with a 30mm Bushmaster :)

A-1E, A-1F, A-1G (AD-5) Skyraider Cockpit Detail Set for the Matchbox kit (48010) gives you an option to build the Matchbox kit with something other than the system operator consoles and seats in the back.

Other Cobra Company resin that I have purchased in the past include the following items:

KA-6D Intruder Tanker Conversion (48011) includes the D-704 refueling store plus the tanker parts for the A-6 Intruder
D-704 "Buddy" Refueling Pod (48012)

I've got the 1/35 AH-1W NTS upgrade set and the 1/48 UH-1N update set for planned future builds and I used most of the 1/48 MH-53 weapons set for my AV-22.  I highly recommend Cobra Co's products.

It seems that Cobra Company is now closed for business.

The web page is gone, now replaced by a generic "404" page and according to VICRUMINT (VICious RUMour INTelligence) at ARC this appears to be true.  While the proprietor has closed his e-Store in the past there is no additional information available at this time to indicate Mr. Miller will reopen his store for business.  Anyone having additional information to share on this would be appreciated.

Well, that is both unfortunate and unexpected.  I'm glad I got a lot of Cobra Co's products that I need/planned to use for several projects, including the recent V-22 exterior update set.

It'll be interesting to see if he sells the molds to another AM company.
