Title: Hotrod Headhunter
Post by: sotoolslinger on February 21, 2012, 11:45:28 PM
So I have never been a big fan of the Expanded Universe of Star Wars having read only 2 of the books. The first one I ever read was "Han Solo at Stars End" in it Han flies an old Z-95 Headhunter fighter. The craft is described as a twin engined ,swing wing ,fork tailed craft with a distinctive bubble canopy. It also has 6 guns.
If you look up Z-95 Headhunter mostly what you get is images of a craft that looks like a single wing ,2 gun X wing. ???
Recently the most excellent model maker Alfred Wong has mastered a (sort of ) proper looking Headhunter in 1/48 but who has 75 bucks to drop on a garage kit.  :o
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Headhunter/hEADHUNTER.jpg)
Well I have always wanted to do my version of the Headhunter but I have been holding out for one of the big X wing models to base use as a base. I finally scored one at the show this weekend and this is one of those projects that takes precedence over everything else  >:D SO HERE

Hey now :-[ I just started  :-\ Maybe it will suck ::) ;)
By the way to whoever sent me the 1/72 F-111  ??? :-[ Many thanks :-*
Yes those are podracer engines :-* :-* :-*
Please also note that I have extended the sensor suite >:D
Right now I am working on a custom cockpit ( thank you Moebius Vipers) I have to be really careful at this point cause the canopy has to be puttied in before I join the fuselage halves together :-\

Mastery of plastery, this is....

Some aspects of these ships look like some of the original concept drawings for the first film, where the craft used more bubble tops and cruder paint. as I remember, those bubble tops were discarded because they were very unfriendly to the blue-screen image compositing methods of the day and instead everything was box-frames and flat panes until the three prequels were made and CGI was the new standard. Same for the paint, with wilder schemes going to grays which worked better for the optical printing.

If you dont have podracer engines, the 1/48 scale GO-229 kit from dragon models has two engines that have the same detail level as these pod racer parts.

Hey thanks y'all :-* You know Russ, the funny thing is , I just checked the stash and I actually have that kit ;D Now at the show last weekend that Horten was going for 50 -60 bucks but I got 2 podracers for 17 dollars >:D

Looks like a lot of work but I sure can't argue with the results you get.  :)  lookin good!

Pretty much :-[ Believe it or don't I just spent my waiting on putty to dry time reading a 20 page post (on some other site) on how incorrect someone else's interpetation of this (really briefly described) ship was though :o
I am such a geek ;)
I must frankly admit that this is one of those " I always knew I could build a better version of that" ::) ??? :-\
If I had another 1/32 X -wing I would do another version based on the depictions in the "canon" publications :icon_fsm:

Love the mods, especially the engines!

Decided that she had too much modern jet/ robotech smoothieness and not nearly enough Star Warsy greebliefication

Wow it's fun to say "greebliefication".

I think I've got an earworm now. Wait, earworms are Star Trek - the Wrath of Kahn and not Star Wars.

36 frikken parts that will fit into about 2 inches :o
I think I am a silly person ;)

Yeah it is weird but if your a SW / Hot Rod geek like my own self( and you) it makes perfect sense... look at the end result of something like a Y-wing  or any hotrod where the hood is left off (sometimes the entire front end sheetmetal)  Compare what a Y-wing looks like in SW as opposed to the original artwork or the  "Clone Wars" or a stripped hotrod or bike :-*

Cool!  "It's so black!  You can hardly see it.  Light just falls into it."
Thanks y'all :-* I have always thought that space camo, especially for a fighter would be a finish that would basically absorb visible light ??? :-\ If your moving fast like a fighter occluding stars would not be a problem... unfortunately that would suck as a paint scheme for a cool model :icon_sleep:
Also on a real spaceship that would absorb heat like, oh a black thing, :-\ which would suck for the folk inside it as space is very hot :icon_twisted:
So she will not be black... think metallics and green?

Avoiding detection would be difficult, I'd rather go with something with high refelctance to disapate at least some of the incomign energies.  How about an electrochromic paint that would change color as desired to allow different color schemes as desired/needed?

-chuckle- I considered it more as an excuse to paint it any way you wished (heck, pink with purple polkadots when the color control system shorted out ;) ).

Excellent stuff Ron - that looks ready to ruin somebody's day, every day..... you hit a ticky-tacky TIE fighter with that lot and he's going home to Momma on a microscope slide.... >:D

Realistically, space cammo is pretty pointless to be honest: you're flying against a background that is, on average, about 3 deg above Absolute Zero, so no matter how darker-than-black you are, you're still going to stand out like a turd on a wedding cake on even the crudest infra-red sensor. The actual environment for a spacecraft flips between harsh extremes: you're either freezing in shadow/deep space or boiling in raw sunlight.

Of course, none of this sensible stuff takes into account "magic" technology  like energy screens et al, so the time-honoured way of dealing with these problems is to techno-babble your way out of them.... ;)

So In the original description of this craft it was called a mottled arrowhead. I interpeted this to mean camoflage but heck it's a spaceship. I have always wanted to try a color casehardened finish so here is what I came up with.

Ron , from where I'm sitting, this camo scheme looks to me like a constellation or nebula. I'm not sure, but does this craft use visuatrinium cloaking paint?

Title: Re: Hotrod Headhunter

Thanks all y'all. :-*
It was actually pretty simple ??? ::) :-\ Well it only took a couple of tries...
The base coat is regular old Duplicolor  Gray Hotrod Sandable Primer. I tried the technique over black primer and Khaki Camo paint first but gray worked out best.
The trick is it is hand painted ink mixed wet on the piece.
To further elaborate; I first tried doing patterns like one would normally do camo but it looked like I just hand painted it on(in other words kinda crappy) also it was over the khaki color. I then just went to the black primer I have been using and just slathered on 4 different colors of india ink and they basically mixed themselves into a neat finish and dried together well.
So I sprayed all the bits I wanted in that finish in the grey hotrod primer , stuck 4 paintbrushes in 4 pots of ink and started making patterns.
Tips and tricks; I found that the dark colors would tend to overwhelm the overall mix so it is best to put them on first (rather sparingly) and use the lighter colors to blend the patterns .
Also keep a bucket o water to clean your brushes as you blend the colors. With inks it kinda don't matter if you get a little yellow in your violet but it makes a BIG difference if you get teal or violet in your yellow.

Frankly, the profile photo did it for me. It's sleeker and sportier than I thought. And you answered my undying question: Why in God's name didn't they put a teardrop canopy on the X-Wing?

Because it looks sooooo cool that nobody would have paid attention to the movie :-* :-* :-*

Beware the TOE >:D
Actually Rafa they did start out with rounder looking craft on the original film but the state of the art filming techniques back then would make the countours disappear into the background blue screens. That is why everything is all boxes and hard angles. You might notice that most of the stuff in the newer films has rounder contours.
