For Christmas and my birthday (2 days later), my brother offered me a UniCraft KhAI-3 (that I plan to build for the Soviet GB at whatif modelers in February) and I told him that - if he accepted to spend more - I would be interested also, from Igor also, by a Novo (ex-Frog) P-82 or/and P-38. Gently, he offered me all! :-*
Now I plan to build the P-82 and P-38, in an inventive way. Instruction sheets are in Russian, but drawings are enough and I learned Russian at school. :)
Either I build them separately (P-82 as TT-tail, single-engined? P-38 as push-pull in the tail?) or I invent a hybrid, or two hybrids from their parts. I have not yet started to imagine this way, could you help me? ???
-
(P-82 as TT-tail, single-engined?
Like this maybe:

P-38 as push-pull in the tail?
Here are the QZ-38A, B, C parts of my question (but I need help mainly for the other possibility: P-38+82 mix or mixes...)

-
Heaven only knows where this will lead to! I'll be watching!
-
Thanks!
or I invent a hybrid
This is a hybrid possibility: tandem twin-plane:
-
or two hybrids from their parts
Yes?
-
or I invent a hybrid
This may be my favorite possibility, not twin-boom but crazily pleasant somehow...
-
I have not yet started to build the model(s) but here is the (Russian) proof I have those 2 Novo kits: ;)
-
I really like the design with the high wing and pusher-puller engine in the middle.
Your imagination never ceases to amaze and delight, mon ami!

-
Thanks!
Brian, your favorite and my favorite could be mixed into a compound triplane (or double sesquiplane):
-
Here are the P-82 parts, white not like the grey of the Monogram kit (of which I built several):
-
And the p-38 kit:
-
To explain why I was so long starting this compound P-38/82 model, I should confess I was making another mix model, for the other site (result below). Some of us have run away forever from there, some post the same models on both sites, some like me post half of their models here and half there, but I can show you the result, meaning "now P-38+82"!
-
How cool is that! Neat layouts
-
:)
-
The pointy one on top looks like it could've come from the Next Gen Design office of Dassault, Boeing, Lockheed, et al but with a delightful twist.
Your boundless imagination never ceases to amaze me, mon ami!

Thanks a lot!
"now P-38+82"!
Here we are! The most simple would be something like this:

-
Oh that looks very promising.
-
Thanks!
Here is the updated project:

-
I was still dissatisfied with the huge P-82 span (at 1/72, while I prefer 1/144 now), so I imagined another way, with truncated wing:
But with the propellers, the width is lmost unchanged, the problem is unchanged for my shelves... I think I will keep the previous way, so much easier.
-
I have called these possibilities MEL-38D, E, F (MEL is for Mélange meaning Mix in French):
I think the most simple to build is MEL-38D, but I may change for MEL-38F, I am not sure yet.
-
Tomorrow Saturday, the build will start again. I plan to fix the P-38 pod on the P-82 central plane, with much putty (to sand later). But I still hesitate about the rest. Now I consider removing the P-82 canopies and P-38 tailplane (and tanks) to make a different plane/glider:

Tomorrow Saturday, the build will start again. I plan to fix the P-38 pod on the P-82 central plane, with much putty (to sand later).
This is not so simple. See the picture: the extra wing chord on the P-38 pod (red arrows) had to be cut away.
And cutting better the connection with the central plane, it was possible to improve the rear of the pod (green arrow below before cutting).
-
Thanks for the update and it looks like you're making nice progress, mon ami!
You are the Alexander Calder of whiffery!

-
Thanks a lot!
Here is the picture of the pod, with putty to fill part of the holes that came removing the plastic... (and I had putty also on the nose, to remove guns into a civilian way: the goal of this design, precisely, is... fantasy).
-
Now, part of the sanding is done, and additional putty is on, and the MEL-38G with tanks is almost complete (what is the engine of it? shhht, this is top-secret electromagnetic force)... one P-82 canopy will remain and this is good for asymmetry that I strongly like...
-
the "vehicle" made with the tanks and radar pod looks great ;D

the "vehicle" made with the tanks and radar pod looks great ;D
I noticed myself that...drone maybe?
Anyway, this little fella is a source of inspiration and probably I will steal the idea 8)..... ;D
Great job Cristophe :)
-
Thanks Eric and thanks Alex! ;)
Anyway, this little fella is a source of inspiration and probably I will steal the idea 8)..... ;D
Feel free to use any idea, there is no patent at all, just the joy to share. But... this is crazy idea, don't lose your mental sanity... ;)
-
After sanding... then putty on again...
-
After sanding the P-82 fuselages and gluing the propellers + adding putty on the P-38 booms and wings, the result was this:
-
Then after sanding the P-38 wings and booms + gluing their propellers and external tailplanes + the main airframe, the result is now this, close to completion...
-
That's looking really good, Tophe!
I have a feeling this may be one of your best gems yet!
Many thanks for the updates, mon ami!
Brian da Basher
-
it is looking good ! keep on going !
-
Thanks! I have glued the booms and reinforced them but I hold the model by one of the fuselages to be sure not to beak all down...
-
That's some extensive PSR work there mon ami and I'm beyond impressed!
It's a real treat to see your incredible concepts take shape!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks.
The canopies are now on, ready for the first layer of paint. Completion in less than 1 month probably.
-
Ooohhh the little one is sooooo cuuuuute !!! ;D
This project of yours comes out well Cristophe,I love it !
-
Thanks!
The models are now painted with the first layer. Including canopies (that will be pen-colored black at the end, because no seat/cockpit done). I have no more paint but it is in order, to be sent Monday (Humbrol or else are not available in my little town).
-
:)
-
That's looking great, Tophe!
I think you're very close to finishing up a real winner and one of your best yet!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks!
Now the 2 models are almost complete. Just finishing remains to be done: blue cover of a few black excessive spots, gluing the 2 broken blades, and that will be done!
-
I really like how you used the same color for the props and canopies, Tophe! This creates a visual symmetry that pulls everything together.
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks!
The models are now finished (my way, with never undercarriage nor roundel...)
-
This is one of my all-time favorites of yours, mon ami!
I especially like those canopy frames. Compliments the fantastic designs perfectly!
Wonderful all the way, Tophe!

Thanks a lot!

And a detail view of the little one:

That little guy is soooo cute!
Great stuff, Tophe!

They have found a place in my shelves at last:

Lovely !

It's great to see your wonderful creations have found a home, mon ami.
Using those four bladed props was truly inspired!
Thank you for starting my day with a smile, Tophe!
