Title: Kobayashiesque Dieselpunk Flying thing
Post by: Dr. YoKai on April 06, 2017, 10:06:16 PM
I have a long fondness for the work of the Japanese designer Makoto Kobayashi - this is a flying Colossus inspired by his one-off anuime from the 1980's,Dragon's Heaven

The main components are a pair of wings from an Airfix Ford Trimotor, lots of scrap plastic,  a forward fuselage from an Airfix Il-28, and an aft fuselage from an Aifix Soyuz.

Fairing atop the center section is half the nose from a Heller Javelin
well, the back part anyway - the barn forward is the center fuselage of the Beagle

Current form with an extended foward fuselage from a plastic test tube.

An engine ( one of six push/pull combos ) and a (heh heh ) Drop Tank.

Here's a link to the anime'. There is a minor bit of nudity ( The main human character gets out of her bath. ) early on - NSFW, I suppose. It's just a nice story about a girl and her Robot.   Enjoy.

Thankee! And apologies to all for the sloppy posting - I was typing in haste before heading off to work this morning and didn't realize how many errors I'd made 'til much later. :icon_crap: Hopefully a bit better now.

Greg - yes, an acquaintance at starship Modeler took it for an Ultralight at first - understandable, since parasols tend to be smaller aircraft. this is intended to be 1/350th, though...

Few more snaps - these first two are an attempt at the stub wings, using plastic fork tines, half-rounds, and thin sheet.

They turned out ok for a first attempt, but weren't quite what I wanted for the look, so I used the wing tips from the Fords. Still, I expect I'll use the technique again soon enough.
There will also be a 'Reaktor' hung in the curve forward of the central pylon.

Most of the weekend was taken up with little bits and pieces. The enginrs are up on struts, and while not yet permenantly attatched, I think they look pretty good. Think of it as a Dornier XXX...

As with any SF build in the modern manner, detail consists of extraneous pipes of dubious function,
modules of mysterious purpose, and turrets.

Looking good!  Is your new lab assistant a Maine Coon, a Norwegian Forest Cat, or just "whatever"?  Clearly tabby markings but that long fur reminds me primarily of those two breeds (we had a half-Maine coon for 18 years).

Thanks, guys! Fluffy ( Mrs. Dr. YoKai put her foot down. ) is a Calico, according to our vet - between 8 & 11 months old, so she's going, ah, into the shop in a couple of weeks. She started hanging around the house in late January, and within a couple of weeks we had coaxed her into the house. She's very sweet natured - I suspect she was abandoned, as she seems a little too well socialized to have grown up feral.

Post by: elmayerle on April 11, 2017, 12:11:03 AM
Cool, we've taken in several strays over the years and all seem to enjoy being taken in.  She may be mainly calico, but that forehead says there's tabby in her ancestry.  I can understand the naming constraints, our latest is simply "April" and she came up to us.

That's from Fortress, that Russian SF short with the doomed, automated machines mindlessly fighting an endless war, no? It does bear a semblance. A little more work over the weekend, mainly details and embellishments. I also tried a technique for adding a corrugated metal surface to the rear fuselage. It's had the edges trimmed since the picture, but I think it'll look ok under some primer.

Some further tweaking of the forward fuselage.

were coming along-

( Yes, much surface prep remains. ;) )

A minor disaster with the rudders convinced me to look for something a little different - Hopefully, I'll be able to
mount the rest of thetailplanes and the engines this weekend. Thanks for looking.

Thanks, Frank! I'll probably add some external ladders after the finishing gets a little further along.  I'll have to see what I can scare up for figures - I think my LHS has some.

And from one Mystery Scientist to another, congrats on the upgrade!

Beautiful!!  The heterodyne apparatus, does it have a heterodyning effect or was it developed by a member of the Heterodyne family (given their reputation as "Sparks" - Girl Genius reference - I could argue that either answer, or both, would be correct).

El Mayerele - Yes to the first, no to the second. (  Always a pleasure to meet another Foglio Fan. )
It certainly has a heterodyning effect. And its tubes are magnificent!!! ( HUGE! )

kerick - Thankee! I was blending two polly s colors, a dark red brown ( I'll look up the proper name in a bit. ) and a sort of pastel orange called 'russian brown'. The corrugated wing surface really lent itself to partial blending & bleeding of the two colors. Its less effective on the smooth surfaces of the fuselage, which is why I'm
trying out the patchwork style.

It's beautiful, however I think the differences in the panel should have been less visible, but it's just my taste, the whole work is impressing!

Will you also paint any metal (copper or brass) detail?

Thanks, colleagues! I've liked Phil Foglio's work since he was doing strips for Dragon magazine back in the 'eighties - but much as I love the Girl Genius series, I've never been too drawn to his mecha. ( Some of the
clanks are pretty cool, though. ) I'll direct your attention to the youtube video linked in the first post.

The 'Reaktor' mentioned earlier will get alclad copper, and I wll be adding accents in various metallics here and there. Currently working on a suitable base.

I was a little anxious about mounting the props ( a 1/350 Gold Medal set I picked up at 60% off at King's Hobby. ) but the solution turned out to be rivets. ( Isn't is always? ;) )

The engine faces still looked a little bare, so I added some louveres.

So ... you won't be operating this from your secret base?  ;)

( I used to read Girl Genius, but I got lost in a welter of new characters and hopelessly intertwined situations and serial disasters ... I do still love Mama Gikka, though.  I think she and the Jaegers would be a great basis for a spin-off series.  :)  )

This is getting close to done - here's a couple of quick snaps. Better pictures of the
completely finished Iron Wing Makoto over the weekend.

Wow it's like you put a Do-X in the transporter from The Fly and it came back morphed with...something.

Outstanding work, Doc! The brass tank up front is especially well done as are all those engines & props!

Colleagues, thanks as always for the kind words. It's nearly done - I need to finish the underwing parasite aircraft ( Which have taken a third form, combining the original hover tank concept, as you will see below. ) I have been dawdling, idling and otherwise preoccupied with a couple of other projects, but it's getting there. These are the new aircraft, andas soon as I can figure out what kind of trapeeze to hang them from, it'll be off the bench.

And finished. Mostly. While attaching the parasite aircraft, one of the forward out board props popped off and vanished into the maw of the great god, Sprue. I'll fabricate another one day soon, but I wanted to get this hulk off the bench for awhile... :-\

Your work always impresses me to no end, Doc, but I really think you've outdone yourself on this epic beauty!

In a truly just world, a picture of this magnificent model would be next to the Webster's entry for dieselpunk.

Fantastic work!
