Though, I object a little: as prooven by the A300/767 then 777, big load does not need many engines nowadays.
All is different with safety: when 2 engines are in a jam on a 2-jet airliner, passengers may die in the crash.
So when Douglas presented the DC-13, the sellers were affirmative: "even if 5 engines are in a jam, the 6Th one will save you, zero risk!"

Love the five engine look. Five will do a great job, but with six it can grind up even more birds before doing an emergency landing/crash.
