I would be happy with multiple timelines being allowed - what do others think?

I see no practical reason for a single time line for a group build such as this.  Especially when you consider all of the varied interests that come into play for any group build that is not based on a specific event or historical record.  Might be practical if there had been a real global conflict that left us all picking up the pieces for years to come.

Multiple - I did an alt history with a post apocalyptic "Silk Road" with very similar equipment to T2K, but a little more air power. OK L-39s and such like.

I always wanted to do a "type GB" where everyone builds a Phantom, or Mustang or TOMCAT HeHe.

the plus is it forces creativity, and its neat to see where we all finish if given the same start point

the downside is not everyone has a kit of the model mentioned which adds cost, or they just cannot stand what gets picked and have no idea or interest in adding their own twist to it.

Maybe you could expand it with "Teen fighters" ?? or "Pursuit planes"? "bent wing Birds"?

A piston perfection or "super prop" GB could be fun

Well here's a suggestion along those line:  2012 represents the 50th anniversary of the first flight of the Lockheed A-12 ( precursor to the SR-71).  Maybe a GB based on the A-12/SR-71 and variations thereof?  This also has the advantages of being a relatively accessible kit + one thT offers room for whiffing. I am thinking of it being timed to conclude around late April since that is the actual date.   Thoughts?

In addition to being a relatively accessible kit there is the additional benefit of a multitude of scales from 1/144 to 1/48.

First off, I really appreciate the discussion on this which is a breath of fresh air. I hope I don't derail things too much by adding my thoughts.

I think we should aim for the first Beyond The Sprues GB to be as inclusive as possible. Unfortunately, narrowing the subject down to one specific type might discourage participation from those who have no interest in that specific aircraft.

While the SR-71 kit is a great starting point from a different markings/color scheme perspective, it's quite challenging for kitbashing.

Instead of an SR-71 GB, how about a Recon Platforms GB in honor of the SR-71 instead? This way, as many interests as possible would be covered and one could use a kit they already have instead of needing to go out and get a kit to participate.

Thanks again for keeping the discussion going and I look forward to seeing our first GB take flight!

Man, good points all.

If we do a type GB the SR-71 is an excellent idea! I do see the point in wanting to keep it very open though... hmmmm back to the drawing board  ;D

I am happy either way.  I was actually thinking the A-12 one being later in the year.

Another idea for this first GB might be simply that:    A first themed GB!  Now as to what that entails though....

My vote for Recon theme: it's broad, and can be made in some different ways, both plastic, and pixel. From longer wings, through PRU colours, experimental supersonic, hypersonic, or even space platforms, all that "ELINT warts" on airlines, or even land recon platforms with elevable booms and cameras.

Could also include submarines, UFOs, softskins and AFVs as well as figures.  :)

Well, some of us like airships...  ;)

I suggest that the name of the group build be "The ISR GB" (ISR = Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) which should cover all aspects of sneaking, peeking, and tactical voyeurism.

A recon build eh?
I could build something like this

Every time you eat celery,an angel vomits in a gas station bathroom. Tanks rule. I know the load is late, but the voices tell me to pull over and clean the guns.

tactical voyeurism.

Sounds like a guy in camo gear hiding in bushes looking through people's windows....

Also a cool name for a GB!

I like the Recon Idea more and more As I think about it, cool idea of bringing other vehicles and figures into it also

Since all have been used for scouting, reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence gathering at some point in history (or alternate history) and it nicely covers all aspects of the modeling hobby with ships, aircraft, vehicles, spacecraft, and figures all having a chance to be represented so it is a win-win for all instead of win-lose and leaving someone out of the event.

Three more ideas for GBs, not necessarily first up but later on:

  • Racing Theme - e.g. Reno racers, F1 cars etc etc
  • Drop Tank GB - need I say more?
  • Space & Scifi

Greg

Greg.
Love the sci-fi idea. I got a couple Gundam kits in da stash.
Another idea.......... Sherman tanks. Like 90mm armed Sherman tanks, not TD's. Firefly Shermans in American service. HVSS suspenions on tank destroyers,or the M7 etc.

Another candidate GB for 2012 is a 30yr tribute to the Falklands War.  This one already has GB dates too:   2 April 1982 – 14 June.

Nice! were we thinking of one or a pair at a time?

A ten day GB would be fun. I know its not an even week and it may just kill me(!) but a ten day build could be a wonderful challenge.

How many themed builds would be going on during the same time frame? This is a thought that's been going around my head the past few days. A non themed build for the first group build here. That way, anyone, know matter what kind of WHIF they build can join in. :)

What is people's preference?

A non themed build for the first group build here. That way, anyone, know matter what kind of WHIF they build can join in. :)

That is a definite possibility.  Kind of an "Anything Goes" theme.

Yeah just make the Time limit like 1 or two months and call it a "there in 60 days or less GB" or something like that. just make the time limit the uniting theme. just keep it up wide open "Glasnost GB" LOL
