The name may change - but I'm going to try finishing this vexing Pegasus XF5 U "Flying Flapjack" as an FAA bird operating from
RN jeep carriers in the South atlantic during the Secret World War. Just a teaser for now -

- but boy howdy this thing is a...challenge. The way the body is split at the midpoint, which has frustrated attempts at
decent alignment, combiined with the brittleness of the plastic ( Four cracks so so far, and I'm usually fairly gentle with
the builds ) is going to cost me most of the existing surface detail. Oh well, for five bucks, I can't kvetch too much.

Getting the cooling fan/spinners is the current task. More pics and backstory around the weekend. This may wind up as a 'Dogfight Double'
with some dubious Noughtsi Flying Saucer.

Wow Craig, you've taken on a tough little kit. $5 for the kit and $20 worth of swearing from the looks of it.

Finally got the fit close enought to seal, started woking on the interior, and the part is was truly dreading, building the props...that part is going smoother than I'd expected-the alignment isn't perfect, but I think
just a little bending will see it right. Something I had really expected to be a hurdle, the seperate hub halfs, actually turned out to
be a blessing in disguise, as it allowed me to drill the mounting holes for the individual blades with a minumum of fuss. I've started
the interior, and should be able to seal it up sometime this week. ( I have manged to snap the seat in two a couple of times.

got a few pegasus WW1 planes for real cheap too, good price , but they can be a pain to get done. in the end i think they work god for the price. cant wait to see this one done.

Slowly forward, with less, and different frustrations along the way.

Spurious sidewalls, and the kit Instrument panel, awaiting a bit more dybrushing and some dots of future.

Its getting a pilot figure, much modified from a seated Hasegawa 37mm Flak crewman

Its all Frank's fault - I've been watching his figure mods with increasing amazement, and asked myself " How
can I emulate that while simultaneously causing myself the most frustration?"

Finally, since I've decided this will be another "Dogfight Double" akin to my Rambolt vs. Float Kikka of a couple of years
ago, I've started work on the Skate's adversary, the mysterious and imponderable Focke Sack 190...

I love the cockpit - especially since you sized it properly for the pilot. After all these years building cockpits, I still occasionally end up with cockpits that fit for either giants (...like you) or midgets.
Sometimes these primitive kits can be very enjoyable; you go in with few expectations and with a little effort, you end up with a beauty. My experience with Pegasus kits have lacked in the fun department.

You know what Sack AS stands for - After seeing the Sack AS 6 not fly, some Nazi said "That is a Sack A Sheisse!" (OK, maybe not, but I'm sure that was the general consensus).

Thanks, Frank - the cockpit was a bit of serendipity - I'm hoping a few dabs of zap will add just enough
detail to turn the gunner into a convicing pilot - I am kinda proud of getting the rudder pedals ' just
right'.

I had originally planned a "Sackerschmidt 109", but the upward curve of the aft fuselage made figuring
out the wing more problematic than I wanted to face. Ever since I discovered the topic of 'Nazi Flying
Saucers' years ago, I've been intrigued and repulsed. Neat, weird designs, in the service of a truly
odious mythology. More later.

Just a quick question for those following the thread - can somebody reccomend the correct ( or closest )
colors in the Testors Model Master line for FAA planes? I'd like the
Skate to look right, and I'm thinking of tackling my Firebrands for this GB too...

I'm not sure which FAA scheme you're going for, Doc, but the Model Masters line of acrylics has a very nice Light Sea Gray.

My recent Hurry Jet was painted with it.

By the way, that's some mighty fine work in your last update!

light grey/green lower, soemthing called 'sky' if I remember right.

If memory serves, their RAF Sky is very good too. I thought it captured that interesting shade quite well. I don't know if they offer an appropriate dark blue. I'd probably have to custom mix something, but that's because I'm cheap and I've already got plenty of insignia blue and black.

The FAA colours are EDSG (Extra Dark Sea Gray) over Sky.

MM 2059 RAF Dark Sea Gray is the closest in Model Master Enamels,
lighter than BS381c-640 EDSG, but darker and bluer than BS381c-638 DSG.

MM 2049 RAF Sky Type S (AN610) is to my eye too yellow-green, the MM Acryl 4840
looks better.

Slowly forward...

While trying to dry fit the halfs, I snaped the top half in two ( again. ) I just decided to attach the two seperately. Annnnd,
when I went to attach the back half, there's a nice 1mm gap between the two

I slid a section of sheet ito it and cut it
to shape. As you can see, I've got a bit of grinding ahead of me...

And I got back to working on the FS - 190.

The name 'Skate' suggests something effortlessly gliding over the surface. Anything but! The FS-190 should be a doddle by comparison!

That's quite a gap! Either sand the lower half or putty the short half to match. Or strips of plastic, then sand.

I think the scratch-built Fw-190 wing/disc will give you fewer headaches.

I've been quiet, but not completely idle...

Forgot to take images of the FS 190 - but its coming along, too. Wings are pretty much done, and now I need to scribe the
gear doors and flaps & whatnot. Sprue has been twisted for a stand - should have it done by the dead line.
