C&C Red Alert - Heavy Tank (based on 1:30 IS 3)
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:25:50 AM »
Hi guys!

Some time ago my friend artoor_k show me this forum and I have finally decided to post here :)
My name is Bartek, Im from Poland and i like to build, scratch build or rebuild sci-fi models, but usually got problems with finishing them ;)

Mentioned in topic IS-3 is some old Russian plastic model from early 80's and is really in 1:30, but that's not a problem here.
As I have learned from internet, Heavy Tank from orginal C&C RA suppoused to looks like double bareled T-80 but in my opinion that's just dosen't fit well to time episode in which game takes place (as I remember 1964). That's why i thought that IS-3 will be perfect for this purpose. Especially in this scale - crew and additional equipment will be in 1:35, so finished model should be preety huge in comparewith other 1:35 tanks.

Here, is some size comparison with my other project (Mk.II Fallout Tactics tank) and present state of work:

here are other photos of model, including inbox:
http://imageshack.us/g/1/10080019/

I intend to make it radio controlled (the orginal model have posibility to mount two electric engines with controler on cable) and as for now back part of turret and machine gun are scratchbuild. Main armament will be composed of two barrels from AS-90

And last thing, sorry for my english, it's been some time since I last write something in this language.

That's so cool! The world definitely needs more modelling of PC game subjects!  :)

I think I remember those !!!   I had parts of the KV-85 but not enough to.use then I got the IS-152 kit. I had to use some of those parts to finished it. I remember the two electric motors, too !!!   You had to build them, too !!!  I can't wait to see how this turns out.

Thanks for so positive feedback :)

The world definitely needs more modelling of PC game subjects!  :)
especially when there is a lot of paper models of vehicles and starships on various websites, which can be easily converted to plastic :)

I loved C&C growing up.  So much fun.
same here, I remember hours spend on first C&C, few years later on Red Alert and finally on Tiberian Sun - those games have the essence of good RTS.

I'll definitely use two electric motors, but not the orginal one, unfortunatelly they weren't present when I recieve this model. If it turns out that currently  posessed motors are to week to propel enough the model I will have to buy something stronger and it can cause some delay with building process.
I have also heard that tracks have irritating habit to slip of the suspension wheel's in those old models...

Good to see you here my friend :) This IS-3 will mutate into serious monster, I'm pretty sure of that :) Can't wait to see it with cannons:)

Yep.  I played all the C&C up to Red Alert 3.  The games weren't as good after Westwood got bought out by EA, unfortunately.  Red Alert 2 (not Yuri's Revenge) was fantastic, though.  Best unit voices of probably any RTS game ever.

By the way, someone posted a Mirage tank that someone else built from RA2 on another forum recently:

By the way, I think you can easily sell your tank as the "missing link" between the RA1 Heavy Tank and the RA2 Apocalypse tank.  Other than the two track units, the RA2 Apocalypse tank is very much IS-3 inspired with a more forward-mounted turret and pike nose.

First of all, thanks for comments :)

Here are some images of model building progress:

Yep.  I played all the C&C up to Red Alert 3.  The games weren't as good after Westwood got bought out by EA, unfortunately.  Red Alert 2 (not Yuri's Revenge) was fantastic, though.  Best unit voices of probably any RTS game ever.

I remember that last time I've played RA2 I haven't finished it. Maybe I was upset about plot or gameplay but after what You said about RA2 I might give it a second chance.
By the way, some time ago I have spoted a mod converting orginal C&C to C&C Generals engine (Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn Redux), its still beta but really worth to play.

By the way, someone posted a Mirage tank that someone else built from RA2 on another forum recently:

Nicely done conversion (isn't it Chellenger yoused as a base?)

It could be like that, but still IS-3 is a step back in tank construction then T-80 who is used as a base for RA1 Heavy Tank. But I'll probably make mine plow similar to those in Apocalypse Tank ;)

This IS-3 will mutate into serious monster, I'm pretty sure of that :)

Maybe i should change the name of subject to "Project Monster"?  ;D

Can't wait to see it with cannons:)

Probably about 10th of April I'll recive berrels.

It's finally happened - I have bought barrels, antena (from BMP3) and crew (Soviet Tank Crew 1943 - 1945 [Masterbox])  ;)

And that's how it looks now:

That white stars on both sides of turret will be red when I finished painting.

Just great stuff, that really works.

I build C&C stuff as well, but mostly around the Tiberium Sun/Wars franchise.
Currently have a NOD Venom Attacl craft on the bench.

The only completed one at the moment is the GDI Orca, in 1/48

some other shots here http://www.modelblokez.org.au/othermodels.html
Better yet.. the build blog thing from SSM
http://www.starshipmodeler.org/gallery12/bt_091507_orca.htm

I have a barely started GDI Hover Missile tank somewhere as well.

Pix of the Venom shortly I hope, as the initial post I put up elsewhere has fallen off due to being slow building the sucker.
I will kick a post off on it here

Sorry for not giving any sign of life for some time but I've got preety busy month.
Lucky for me I've still got enought time to tinker a bit with the tank so since last time I've added some details and put the layer of brown paint as a basic colour. After that for about a week i was drybrushing hull with red paint and add another details (wires, reflector casing etc.). I've tried to keep as close as possible with painting scheme to orginal Heavy Tank and here is what works out:

Some details (sorry for the quality of photos, they were made at evening and after a quite long fight with my camera I've lost patience and decided to leave them as they are):

Additional equipment and figures that will be added later:

@ buzzbomb
thanks for photo and links to that Orca Bomber - beautiful and inspiring work :)

Many thanks for the link. It looks like that those paper models came from various C&C Games.

Ni-ice! :)

Very RED - stand out like dogs' b@lls on a battlefield but, I guess (coz I've never played the games), it's in keeping with the game style.

I look at those twin barrels and I can't help but think of a very large GAST autocannon.
