A-10 seaplane fighter
« on: April 08, 2020, 10:17:29 AM »
I recently started a kitbash on another forum for their "In The Navy" GB. I usually don't get into many group builds as I build so slowly I never finish in time. Now with this "shelter in place" stuff going on I might have a chance.

Just a few pics to show my progress so far.

Here's what the floats started out looking like.

I decided to lengthen the main float to better fit the A-10 fuselage. I used sprue to build a frame for the stretch.

I curled a piece of plastic sheet to wrap around the frame. Gaps filled with CA glue or plastic slivers.

Much PSR at the moment.

Next will be trying to build the box over the fuselage the wings will attach to and hold the main gear.

Fine pontoon stretch technique.     With A-10 engines up out of way from water spray, its a natural for a float plane version.

Excellent idea!  Especially with the A-10 having the engine intakes masked by the wing so that spray ingestion is reduced.

A little progress. The float is attached to the fuselage.

Now if my wife would go back to work I might have more progress! She's thinking up Honey do projects faster than I can get the materials for them!

Puttied up the fuselage float joint. I glued in a strip of really thin polystyrene over the joint. I cut it from a clear cookie container. Once this is sorted out I値l work on the wings. I think I値l use the S-3 Viking horizontal stabs but it in a vee. I値l have to check that as I go as it might be in the path of engine exhaust.

Probably need to set the angle of the vee so that they don't.

Well, here's a look at plan B. Its the S-3 tail parts in a new arrangement. I'm glad I'm not the engineer who would have to figure out how to do this for real!

It's tacked on for now so we'll see if I continue to like it or if I come up with another idea.

I might get out the saw again and shorten the whole thing a bit.

Looking good so far, don't think it needs shortening at all, sleek is good . . .   ;)

cheers,

Minor touch ups on the PSR on the fuselage. Nothing worth taking a pic of just now. Time to start working on the box that goes on the fuselage that supports the wing and holds the main gear. If I push on this I might finish by the end of the month.

Finally finished the PSR on the fuselage and attached the tail. I found a solution to the problem of what to do with the saddle across the A-10 fuselage that holds the wings. An old Ertl/AMT Skyhawk in 1/48th donated its wings to the effort. It had been sitting in a drawer for 20 years so time to make a move on it. Anyway, here are some pics.

Blue is the clipped Skyhawk upper wing. Much chopping was required between removing from the half finished model and what you see.

The underside. I boxed in some future wheel wells and then covered the hole thing with really thin polystyrene from a food package box.

I wrapped sandpaper around a piece of 1/2 inch copper pipe to sand a trough where the A-10 fuselage will fit. The Skyhawk parts got really thin and had to be glued back together. it will be much stronger when mounted on the A-10.

I added thick pieces of plastic to the outside edges so that I can round them off later.

Can't believe its been July 10th since the last post on this project! Lots of things been going on here so maybe it will calm down and I can get something in now and then. Anyway, I cut some wheel wells in the middle bay and am gluing up some gear legs from the A-10 kit main gear and the leftover main legs from the afore mentioned Skyhawk. Still not long enough so adding some blocks inside the wheel bay. raising the wing and adding a float makes for a tall fuselage. I'll post pics when there is more to see. I hope that is soon.

So now we have some legs!

A combination of A-10 legs, Skyhawk legs and some sprue.

Now I have to cut a hole for nose gear.

The whole saddle device worked very well. Attaching the wings should go well. More PSR around the saddle and a few touch ups.
