Title: Italeri
Post by: Jeffry Fontaine on December 15, 2011, 12:34:41 PM
Michael Benolkin has posted a review of the Italeri 1/35 Vosper 72.5' MTB 77 kit (http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/it/kit_it_5610.shtml) that provides images and a description of the kit contents.  This is certainly nice kit with the exception of the price which might be a real turn off for those that are modeling on a restricted budget.  Though I suspect that anyone interested in this subject will find a way to come up with the cash.

Last year I acquired two of the Italeri 1/48th scale WW2 German Aircraft Weapons Set (Kit Number 2691)  (http://shop.italeri.com/Products/6930-2691-wwii-german-aircraft-weapons.aspx)
Click on html or image to view product page at Italeri.com
(http://shop.italeri.com/images/thumbs/0002386.jpg) (http://shop.italeri.com/Products/6930-2691-wwii-german-aircraft-weapons.aspx)

I had not bothered to do anything with them due to other things having priority in the pile of kits I have in "protective custody" and so they sat.  I finally had a chance to sit down and inspect the contents of the kit and was both pleased and disappointed at the contents of these weapons sets.  If you are looking to bomb up your aircraft model, there are enough bombs in a variety of sizes and shapes to satisfy that need.  The kit containes the following items on two parts sprues:

2 X SC 1000 Bomb
2 X SC 250 ZAR Anti-Ricochet Bomb
2 X SC 250 Bomb
4 X SC 50 Bomb
2 X SD 1700 Bomb
2 X SD 250 Bomb
2 X PC 1400 Armor Piercing Bomb
2 X PD 500 Armor Piercing Bomb
2 X 900 Liter Fuel Tank
2 X 300 Liter Fuel Tank
2 X WB 81 Machine Gun Pod
2 X AB 70 Cluster Bomb
2 X AB 250 Cluster Bomb
2 X AB 500 Cluster Bomb
2 X ER 4 Multiple Bomb Rack
16 X Whistles to enhance the noise of the bomb during its fall to the target

If you plan to construct the ER 4 Multiple Bomb Rack you have sufficient SC 50 Bombs to complete one full rack.  There are only two of the AB 70 Cluster Bombs included in the kit so a second kit is required to if you wish to load up your ER 4 Multiple Bomb Rack with a full load of AB 70 Cluster Bombs.

The little Whistles provided in the kit are quite small and at a glance I suppose they could pass for the whistles that were often attached to the real bombs to enhance the terror effect during air raids but trying to attach them to the bomb fins will be a challenge as there are no positioning pin holes or indentations on the bomb fins to indicate where they are to be mounted.

The one item that I was very pleased to see was the gun pod containing no less than six machine gun barrels.  The fit of the pod is a bit off so when it is assembled there will be a need to sand the edges of the nose cap in order to get the diameter reduced so that it will blend in with the two sides halves of the pod that make up the unit.  The very small machine gun barrels are designed to fit in to the three holes in the nose cap and appear to do so without much effort or fitting.

Aside from the soft plastic and some fit issues with certain parts, the kit is a great source for WW2 German aircraft ordnance and if it can be found for a discounted price you could benefit by adding this to your parts box for your future model aircraft projects.

Italeri's Reaper is a reboxed Skunkmodels Workshop Reaper. However, Skunkmodels includes two complete kits per package. I don't know whether Italeri does, but it would surprise me.

I thought I had seen something about a 1/48th scale Sunderland but a quick search of the interweb shows that there is a 1/32nd scale multi-media kit of the Sunderland available via the Sea Wings (http://www.seawings.co.uk/) web site from a company called Tigger Models.  The kit for sale is at this link: Tigger Models 1/32nd scale Short Sunderland Mk.1/2 (http://www.seawings.co.uk/Shop-TiggerModels-SunderlandCatalina32scalekits.htm)

The kit under construction by Bryan Ribbans of Sea Wings is at this link: Tigger Models 1/32nd scale Sunderland Build Log (http://seawingsblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/building-beast-my-132nd-scale-short.html).  According to the reviewer the kit was available from Pacific Coast Models, Santa Rosa, California (http://www.pacmodels.com/)

Sea Wings Blog (http://seawingsblog.blogspot.com/)

A little further digging and I did come up with a hit for a Sunderland in 1/48th scale that was selling for just a few dollars shy of $300.00 when it was available.  Alpha Flight 1/48th scale Sunderland kit preview at CyberModeler with pictures of the RESIN parts (http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/alpha/kit_alpha_4817.shtml)

Sharing a niche with the likes of the Aero Club 1/48th scale Vulcan it would seem.  Shame too as there would be some very happy modelers if both were to be made available in Classic Airframes quantities or some other limited run injection plastic kit.

Typical, and typically garbled, Benolkin 'review'.
"navalized Packard Liberty" ?, geez, do some research dude, the Packard 4M-2500
series was not based on the Liberty, it was a clean sheet design.
Title: Re: Italeri

Garbled reviews and something that really irritates me more is his willingness to allow certain personalities to continue to post kit reviews that have no images of the sprues.  In this day of cheap and affordable digital cameras the reviewer in question has no excuse for not providing images to support the review but continues to generate them just the same.

That aside, CyberModeler has uploaded images of the 2013 Italeri catalog that you can view one page at a time with plenty of pictures (link is dead)

1:35th scale X-Craft FTW! :)  Wonder how much that is going to be?

The supposedly "new tool" 20.0' cargo container may actually be the old ESCI 20.0' cargo container kit which was sold as a 1:32nd scale model in the original offering that was a snap-assembly type kit that came with a trailer.

You might be able to find one of the original ESCI kits on eVileBay for a decent price now that it will be available again.

LOL, you have no idea how close to home that hits. I was working at CANOSCOM when this was an issue (it still is). Suffice to say the article is rife with errors & hyperbole. There's also an aspect that is not explained in the article, but I'm not sure I can comment publicly on, wish I could as it would save face and explain a lot.

There is definitely nothing wrong with the ESCI 20.0' Cargo Container other than the fact that it is a snap-together kit.  Had the chance to pick up six of the things back when there was a Squadron Model Shop Franchise in the Washinton, D.C. Beltway area many moons ago.  Molded in red plastic and the trailer was molded in black plastic.

Yeah, if that big Starfighter can be built as a Canadian then I plan to get one. It'll probably be the only *big* kit I'll ever build, but the NMF CF-104 with white wings is very special to me: first fighter I recall going 'ooooohhhh' over, first I knew the name of, and so one of the things that triggered my love of airplanes. :)

The F-35 is also something I'll be picking up...

I have seen images of the kit contents on Track-Link in Martyn Smith's review of this kit at this link: Italeri 1:35th scale 20.0’ Cargo Container (kit number 6516) - quick look (http://www.track-link.com/forums/modelling_kits/14468)

It appears to be new tool from what I can tell.  What really puts a burr under my blanket is the MSRP on this kit at the local McHobby Shop: $29.00 before adding on the sales tax.  WTF!?  This kit has all of what, fifteen parts and a decal sheet that gives you options for U.S. Army, U.S.M.C., and Italian Air Force.  The kit box is not much different in size to some of the Tamiya model accessory kits such as the GMC CCKW accessory kit or the Wehrmacht 2.0cm FlakVierlieng kit and neither of those items is anywhere near $29.00 in price.  While I can understand the need to make a profit this is outright piracy and not all of it can be put on the importer since the EU price is very close to the U.S. price at €17.50.  The only way I will even consider purchase of this kit is when the price drops to a fraction of the current MSRP.

Depending on how that 104 prices out compared to the Hase 1/48 and DACO correction set, despite that I avoid 1/32 as just impracticably big, if my gut's right that my gal's dad worked on 104s during his RCAF days I'm tempted to build him one...

It's kinda funny... if she and I somehow work out the complications of geography and budgets and tie the knot, my father-in-law would actually be old enough to be my grandfather. LOL And he for some reason finds it funny that his little girl is finding herself skirt-chased by a MUCH younger guy... O.O

That will have to wait for a F-35B or F-35C kit.  The F-35A has an internal gun.  Still, I wonder if, in the interests of "commonality", they included provisions for the gun pod in this version (much as the F-35A has the bay for the probe adn drogue system, even if it's not fitted)?  A "two-gun" F-35A could be quite striking.

This kit has been out for a while so it may not be new for some but at least you get a chance to see the contents inside the box thanks to the efforts of Roland Kunze and modellversium.de.

Italeri 1:48th scale V-22 Osprey (kit number 2622) (http://www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=9518)

(http://a.modellversium.de/kit/bilder/5/1/8/9518-tumb.jpg) (http://www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=9518)

For those of you that have the older release of the V-22 Osprey in the Testor's or Italeri box you will notice some differences between this kit and what you have in your stash.

Am I seeing things or does it have RAISED panel lines????  ???

They aren't so much raised panel lines in the traditional sense but rather attempts to represent the RAM coverings that you can see in some photos (such as below).  Kitty Hawk has done similar on their 1/48 kits.  I am sure that on painted, they will be somewhat less prominent:

And yet there are markings for Belgium, which whilst definitely a future possible operator is not currently part of the F-35 program...so in effect this is a partial whiff in a box ;)

Me suspects someone hasn't done their research at Italeri....

There's a whole bunch of 1/72's that look interesting  -- Stirling Glider Tug for one, 20 foot Sea-Cans for another.

I think that RF-84F must be a re-release, I've built one of those years ago.

Just looked at the 'big book', it's one of the very first kits Italeri (then called Italaerei) produced - kit #108.  Later kit # 1108 which is the one I have.  And I've got one of those Supermodels MB.339's too ---

Michael Benolkin has provided images of the 1:35th scale Italeri M923 'Hillbilly' Gun Truck (kit number 6513) (http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/it/kit_it_6513.shtml)

Click on html or thumbnail to view.

(http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/it/images/it_6513_titletn.jpg) (http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/it/kit_it_6513.shtml)

Pretty much the same plain vanilla M923 that was released a few years ago with a new sprue to "gun-truck-ize" it and improve sales.  M900 series have pretty much been superceded by the FMTV series of vehicles with the hard top and COE configuration but can still be found in large numbers with various State National Guard and Reserve units.  The cattle bar bumper is rather interesting and certainly gives the M923 a different appearance.  Maybe Italeri can market the truck next as a vehicle for the coming Zombie Apocalypse?  This is the second gun truck themed kit from Italeri.  The previous gun truck kit released by Italeri last year was the M977 HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) Gun Truck (kit number 6510) (http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/it/kit_it_6510.shtml) with an extra parts sprue containing the "gun-truck-ized" parts.

The Stirling glider tug would make it very easy to do other "disarmed" versions, such as:

An AEW one with this kit : http://www.lonewulfmodels.co.uk/view_product.php?c_id=21&sc_id=51&p_id=3130 (http://www.lonewulfmodels.co.uk/view_product.php?c_id=21&sc_id=51&p_id=3130)

A post-war MPA version with belly radar and a MAD boom

A wartime/early post-war SAR version with an air-dropped lifeboat

The reissue of the LCVP with thirty figures is certainly going to keep someone busy working on all of those faces :)

Yes indeed: it'd probably take a couple of tins of green...... ;)

Not many LCVPs were used at Normandy.  Most of the assault waves came ashore in LCAs.  I'd have rather seen them do an LCA actually but I suspect it wouldn't have gone down as well in the US market.

Interesting aside story, the steel fabrication shop I did my apprenticeship at, had the job of making thousands of rudders with the control shaft for landing craft during the war --- They were one of the first shops to get electric arc welders too, got given them by the government.

It's a rebox of their existing LCVP from 2005, the 'new moulds' are for the GIs. The estimate of LCVPs
used at Normandy is somewhere between 800 and 1100, so I suppose one could say that's not many.

I have acquired two of those since I posted that link.  Yes, there are a number of nice items included.  I especially like the two versions of radar masts and the 20mm Oerlikon.  Just wish it would have been the later light weight mount instead of the original and very heavy mount used on the early ElCo boats.  My only complaint is that the price for this kit is quite high and if you can find it for less than the MSRP you should take advantage of that lower price.

Sherman M4A3E8…. Looks like a new suspension and turret added to the older M4A3. While I always like the Italeri Sherman kits, the A3 was kind so-so. Given that Dragon, Academy, Tasca/Asuka and Tamiya have all released E8s in recent years,  I'm not sure if another iteration is necessary but hey, why the heck not?

For something different, do a F-35D (for "Dual Refuel") as a F-35A but with the probe and drogue of the F-35B & C added (that space is left empty in the F-35A forward fuselage for commonality).  There's a cost in weight and complexity, as well as material cost, but it would give more refueling options to operators that have both systems in use.

Probably aboard HMS Cumberland (one of the "Counties" anyway) when she sailed up, but arrived to late, for the River Plate shindig.  :)

Would it be wrong to make a manned version of the X-47B? Or re-scale it to 1/144, 1/200 or 1/350, remove the wings mad turn it into a stealthy bomber or airliner?

Scale that puppy up to where the wingtip pods from ModelCollect's modified A-12 can properly fit and you definitely would have something that could be done as a Klingon aircraft from before they went interstellar.

Removing the wings gets it closer to looking like a X-47A; be a tempting mod to the kit.

Yes, way too thick.  You really don't want those edge effects that thickness would produce on a real aircraft.

I sent Italeri an email saying they would have a winner if they lose all those raised RAM lines. I attached a couple of photos of the one I took pictures of down in Yuma which show the aircraft is as smooth as smooth.

Their F-35A is also covered in these raised line too, I started sanding them off but gave up after a while. Going to use it as a donor on another F-35 project I'm working on.

For the third(fourth?) year in a row the 1/48 Agusta-Bell JetRanger repop is there, blatantly plastered all over page 8:

It would be nice if they used that as a start to produce a kit of the Bell Model 407 which could then be used as a basis for a model of the MQ-8C.  Still, I'd settle for a Model 206 for now (if/when it comes out, wonder how long 'til a conversion for a 206LR shows up?)

It's likely the ESCI mould, which according to Scalemates (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/esci-4061-ab-206-jetranger--163436) has been around since 1980. Given that Fujimi and Heller have also released 1/48(/50) kits of the type over the years I'm surprised no-one's done any conversion sets. Actually, I take that back: I've just found this 206L-1 set (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/top-gun-bell-206l-1-long-ranger-ii--140070) by Top Gun Models (https://www.facebook.com/TopGunModel?fref=ts) on Scalemates. I've asked for availability info on Top Gun's Facebook page.

Although my (first?  ;)) copy of the JetRanger kit will need custom decals, it's encouraging to see the label for a Super Decal sheet on the catalogue listing. The thing that I really, really wish and hope they fix is the height of the rotor mast. As seen in this gorgeous build (http://www.arcair.com/Gal15/14501-14600/gal14564-Bell206-Putthitornworasit/00.shtm), it's too short and makes the machine look weird.

Well their not in this particular kit but one can get decals:

and it shouldn't be too difficult to modify.  The nose is probably the only thing.  One can/could get a conversion:

Basically, the Sea Harrier is the ESCI kit ;) which was released by them in 1983 as a 'new tool' kit. There have been a number of re-releases by them since then and as Italeri has ESCI in the fold, I'm not surprised by this re-release. Same with the F-5A

Still the best 1/72 SHAR out there.

Decals options on the F-5A look lovely.

Oooh, that's a nice surprise!  :icon_surprised: Don't think they announced this previously, did they? And when I saw the breakdown of the single-seater kit, I didn't have much hope for a twin-sticker.
