Race car Ideas and Inspiration
« on: February 11, 2012, 07:38:11 AM »
Hi folks,

A place for your race car (and related) ideas and inspiration.

To start with, a real world beast that was never tested but still exists:

Mercedes-Benz T80 world record car from 1939 - powered by a DB603 (tuned up to 3,000 hp!!!!) and with a target speed of 750km/h.

Regards,

Greg

Project came to naught when the Granvilles were informed that in order to race at Indy
a 'car' had to have four-wheels.

Frank Lockhart died when a tire blew and the car went out of control.

One of the great what-ifs.

I don't know about the orange tint, but I suppose one could get that changed if buying…

Another one I have long found interesting - the Brabham BT46 & BT46B:

The original version featured several radical design elements, the most obvious of which was the use of flat panel heat exchangers on the bodywork of the car to replace conventional water and oil radiators. The concept did not work in practice and was removed before the car’s race debut, never to be seen again. The "B" variant of the car, also known as the "fan car", was introduced at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix as a counter to the dominant ground effect Lotus 79. The BT46B generated an immense level of downforce by means of a fan, claimed to be for increased cooling, but which also extracted air from beneath the car. The car only raced once in this configuration in the Formula One World Championship—when Niki Lauda won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp. To the dismay of its designer Gordon Murray, the concept was voluntarily withdrawn from racing again by Bernie Ecclestone.

In a similar vein to the six wheeled Tyrell P34 above there were also the Williams FW08B and the March 2-4-0 below. The P34 was designed to minimize its frontal area but the other two were intended to solve the anticipated traction problems with the more powerful engines that were coming on stream. As it happens it was a non-problem as vastly improved aerodynamics and sticky tyres solved the it.

As with the P34 both of the 'rear six wheelers' still exist.

Australian Cops Got This Ominously Beautiful Porsche 911 Police Car

Abandon your dreams of setting a land speed record on the second longest straightaway in the world, Porsche has just bestowed Australian police in New South Wales with a 911 Carrera.

abit of Retro ....

French racer & ....

BABS
Formerly the Higham Special fitted with a 27,059 cc Liberty aero engine, Benz gearbox and chain final-drive, Thomas Parry bought the car from Count Zorowski's estate & christened the car 'Babs'.  After carrying out considerable amount of work he took it to Pendine Sands in October 1925 for a crack at the land speed record.  Bad conditions slowed them but they returned in April 1926.  Parry-Thomas achieved a speed of 169.30 and next day pushed the record over the 170 mph mark, holding the World Land Speed record until January 1927 when Segrave reached 174.883 mph.

In March 1927 they had another go but the car overturned, crashed & bust into flames, killing Parry-Thomas - he was extracted and the wreck buried in the beach.  It was excavated in March 1969 & is now fully restored & races at vintage meets.

That streamlined Mercedes would do over 450mph?  On 1930s tires?  I don 't think so.
