Hi all we due to the kind generosity of CPNGROATS (a member on another forum who was so impressed by my model ships he gifted this to me from his own stash)I have received this

today.
Thank you very, very much George, very kind indeed.
I hastily opened it tonight eader to start but my missus says NO!!! "you have enough models on the go, cluttering up my house. you finish some of them off and get them out the way". to be fair I do have 9 on the go and bits are all over the place, she's generally ok so I cant complain ( but I have found in the past a bit of sweet talking can bring her round ) so watch this space, in the very near future.

but I have found in the past a bit of sweet talking can bring her round
The sweet talking didn't go so well...

Ha ha ha ;D

During my formative modelling years in the late 60's/early 70's this kit was on my Must have list, you know the Revell Catalogue with all the models you have to have ticked (no highlighters in them days)
It never happened.
So I am really keen to see how this comes along

You are a deck color-finishing genius :)
Reddish spots on deck (before being brushed out): are those liquid or powder ?
-
Pastels sand a stick on 160 grit paper then brush across the grain, I used several colours building up the colour till it was how I wanted.

Hi all well I've tried a little experiment, I got some copper and brass leaf with the intention of guilding the copper plates and spraying it with salt water to get the patination of the real plates, well they dissolved so that's out so now I'm thinking I will guild it then distress it with a combination of washes and such my question is ( as there is some debate as to weather it was copper or muntz metal which is an alloy of zinc and brass I think) should I guild it with copper or brass.

The decks and the plating look great. I wanted this kit (and the Great Eastern) as a kid, but they were beyond my skills at the time. My Dad ended up buying and building both. This brings back good memories.

Coming along very nicely. Those old Revell kits were really very good for their time.

Well I'm so cross with myself, went to do some rigging on this and dropped it, snapped off the rear mast broke the shrouds on the fore mast snapped some of the rigging on the bowsprit, a few of the hatches have come off, broken some of the stanchions round the top of the rear cabin. luckily nothing that cant be fixed but its put me back quite a bit, Grrrr and no one to blame but my butter fingers. I could almost swear, flippin heck, blimey and fiddle sticks (sorry for the profanities there)
-
Me? I would be swearing & cursing loudly & profusely. Well restrained, that man! :)
-
Hi all well repairs made.
This believe it or not was the worst bit ( I glued that wheel on at least half a dozen times)

and made a bit more progress

Hi all here is tonight update may I first say anyone contemplating this ship, please read the rigging instructions alongside the build instructions and dont leave them till the end, as you can plainly see I have not done that and still I've made things extremely awkward for myself, there is some rigging from the main mast to the four iron rings in the deck which now I have the belaying pin racks and the foremast shrouds in place will be extremely difficult to attatch.
anyway here is where I'm at now.

Baring in mind these are almost Identical scales (the thermop is 1/96 and the soliel is 1/100) I still cant believe how much heavier and bulkier and cumbersom the soliel was (I mean I know she had to be able to withstand cannon fire and such) but she must have been sooooooo slooooowwwww

Whoa! I was whittering on about productivity in another thread. The inferred limitations obviously don't apply to you! :)

Hi all well this must be jinxed I went to get an hour in tonight and have had a catastrophe, now I've got several hours of remedial work, it's now back in the outhouse while I calm down.

Ouch! :o
Don't give up, though! A guy who can flip from bikes to boats to whatever & put out the photo-realistic results you do can't be beaten by a mere broken spar! :icon_alabanza:
-
Ouch! :o
Indeed! And all that gorgeous, taut rigging :(
Still, appropriate recuperative medicinals seem already to be on hand ;)

Well repairs made and a small update, I really hope I don't have any further catastrophe's

You're a better man than I am, Brother Nuts! :icon_alabanza:
-
Thanks mate, I've barely started the rigging and yep it's hair pulling stuff (well it would be if I had any)
-
Hi all here is the next update I noticed a split in the vac form mizzen sail and was going to patch it with a stitched square then thought I would experiment with some super glue.
Unfortunately the superglue made the weathering go white but a coat of acrylic white and you would never know.
I've finished all the ratlines on the forecast

I'm actually quite shocked and proud, my missus just said you can't stick that in your junk yard(what she calls my spares room)she said I just can't think where to put it, maybe we could get a display cabinet.
-
Well, there's a win, right there! :)

It's Beauty kpnuts, and you're right to feel proud of it!
I cannot understand why your wife is afraid... ;D

I'm a drooling wreck curled up in a corner of my study & I'm only looking at the photo's of it! :o
-
Hi all well this is shelved again for a while I've broken the (I don't know what it's called) the bit that tensions the bowsprit, I'm not actually sure how to fix it as it's very thin plastic and superglue doesn't seem to work I'm so annoyed at my clumsiness, this is the fourth time I've broken something on this kit. I will fix it, it's just annoying.

Is your CA glue fast-acting or the slow type? That may help with your repairs.
-
Can you replace the part with brass or real wood? ???
-
Hi all well fixed part so back on it again.

Excellent!
-
Well I'm livid I was hoping to finish this tonight (so close and now so far) I picked it up to turn it round to do the rigging on the left side of the second mizzen sail and it slipped from my fingers, if I'd let it fall it would probably landed on the floor on it's stand with no damage instead clumsy me tried to save it I broke the bowsprit (again) it took Supreme control not to hurl it at the wall I've managed to create a heath Robinson collection of weights and threads to pull it all together and get all the rigging true (the dolphin striker will be a bit twisted though) I'm hoping when all set it will still all be true and I won't have to strip all the rigging off and start again. I really am cross, I mean really cross, I came so close to finishing her grrr.
-
Oh, Gawd! :o
However, if anyone can pull off the recovery, it's you, mate!
-
Hi all well it's finally finished.
Just one question, I know which one goes on the main mast from the box art but where do these other flags go.
