Airfix 1/72 Bf109G-6 ("Purse out of a sow's ear build" #3)
« on: September 12, 2014, 06:23:22 PM »
Here is my take on the old "Gustav" which has now, thankfully been put out to grass. It has been made OOB and painted with a hairy stick, apart from spraying the matt varnish. The swastikas come from Xtradecal.

It was built in an ATF Group Build reliving the first Airfix kits we ever built, mine being one of these in 1965! At least this time I didn't melt the undercarriage legs and fog up the canopy! Oh, and the tailplanes stayed on this time too!

Man, that's a good job on that kit!

It is a D-O-G.  :o

If you want to know what he started with, go here:

That thing is a very bad kit. Very bad.

I was about to correct you Faust and say that this model Dave has masterfully "silk pursed" is the '60s Airfix offering - not the underscale '70s Heller release ( that I'm very familiar with ) and then I had a closer look at the photo at the link you provided showing that the Heller kit shown is actually a repop of the old Airfix mouldings !!  One has to wonder why Heller would do such a thing when they are already in possession of a marginally less horrible 109G !!

Nice nostalgic job there Dave,  but to be totally accurate with how most of my friends and I built them in the '60s & '70s it needs some fireworks ( optionally a skyrocket, tom thumb or penny bunger ) strapped to the fuselage.
 ;)

Being able to achieve such a fantastic result from this old kit really speaks volumes about your talent, Dave!

Love the paintwork!
