F-22 1/32 (No, not Testors)
« on: December 23, 2014, 08:04:48 AM »
Hello!

Few years ago (2007 as far as I'm concerned) I build 1:32 YF-22 by Testors. It was one of my first 1:32 models. I modified it as I could but result wasn't so good. Lack of skill was visible. This time I try to do it better.

As far as I love F-22 I could not force myself to convert Testors YF-22 into F-22. I know that's possible, I've seen converted models but amount of job was scaring me.

Few weeks ago while reading G.I. Joe forum I stumbled on interesting info, that True Heroes F-22 is almost parfect 1:32. I quickly scanned website, if it's available in Cracow's Toys'r'Us. Of course, it was. I checked lenght and span and surprise! It's really 1:32. Because it was Christmas Sale the price was really low. And now it's time to convert a toy into model!

Mine F-22 is basically the same but desert yellow/gren camo instead of gray/dark gray

First of all - canopy. It was too big. According to scale drawings I cut it in proper places. Canopy now has right shape. Cut-off parts were glued to fuselage as a cockpit sidewalls

Cockpit (not finished yet) was scratchbuild using paper F-22 model as a basic pattern

Instrument panel was done using same method as cockpit

Artoor, it looks like your are off to a good start on that F-22.  What type of weapons are included with this model?  I saw some missile shapes in the first image and it seems there are AMRAAM shapes plus some other missile shaped items that I do not recognize.

Is the shape of this toy more in line with the production F-22?

I also fixed your title to state F-22 1/32 (No, not Testors) for you :)

There are two AMRAAM-s and two JDAM-s (more or less  :) ). The shape is correct (even front part of fuselage has a proper elevation, not like in Italeri model). Panel lines ale quite adequate to real F-22.

Hello!

It's finally snow in Cracow. Temperature around -2o C and almost no clouds. Nice day at least.

Today I've destr...errrr... disassembled F-22 so now I can begin detailing of internal areas. I've scartchbuild weapon bays...

...and sealed unnessesary holes in gear wells.

I've found photo of Aires front gear well for Academy F-22 and realized that it's very simple. I've detailed front well using cooper wire and styrene:

This is coming along. The cockpit looks good. Covering the screw holes might be annoying, unless you have a hole punch.

I think I'll do it using styrene rod in proper diameter.

Yesterday I've started detailing wells and bays.

This was a nightmare, because after finishing I realized that I made huge mistake. There are only about 13 of these "stripes" in F-22 bay. I made much more, TOO MUCH!

In wheel bays there are only basic details by now:

Hello,

I forgot how weak I am whet it comes to wiring. I always have problems with glueing wires etc. I'm not a detail/rivet counter but I see that bays below are somehow...empty. Maybe I'll try to make more wires in different sizes. Additional details are parts of some computer plugs.

Only a question today.
I couldn't find any clear photo of main gear. I wonder if this below is correct? It looks like a gear of a YF-22 not F-22.

Unless you have-to-have ribs, wires, lines zactly right.  Go with what fits and looks reasonable.

No, no...not exactly...but still to look quite real. You know, I have an evil plan  >:D
I want to take part in one of the largest Scale Model Fests in Poland. Usually I'm only in SF category. This time I'd like to enter 1/32 category-something banned for heretics like me :) But believe me...I don't planning to win anything in this category. I just want to show some JMN's that there IS a chance to make a model out of a toy and don't feel ashamed for it. But anyway...I won't go crazy with wiring. Just a few more :)

Today I've painted cockpit and I like it :)

Good idea :-) I'm not sure if there is exact translation of JMN in polish but I'll give it a try. Just to find a good place for such decal:-)

I have a problem so I have a question. Do you know a company where I can order 1/32 decals for F-22? I wrote an email to Twobobs but they answered that they don't do such custom decal sheets. Maybe you know any company that can do it?

Hello,

Because there is no option that I could buy a proper AM wheels (f.ex. for F-15) I've decided to detail "kit" wheels:

Also, when analyzing photos, I realized that the angle of "verticals" is wrong. I've add a styrene strip to make'em more tilted

I had to buy expensive but unfortunately needed set

Hello,

I have F-22 in my modelling cave where I have more place. Now I'm testing colors. I bought Italeri paint set "Modern USAF/US Navy Aircraft" consisting of 6 colours. I have an idea how to get prismatic paint effect without "Raptor Sheen" but I have to test it. More important question is: what colors ale appropriate for Raptor? Light Ghost Gray overall, dark areas Dark Ghost Gray and Gull Gray brighter areas? This is my idea but in fact, I have no clue.

Hello,

After many trials, too much paints bought and more disappointments than I could count I managed to (almost) paint my Raptor :) Maybe it's too dark/too bright/too grey/too blue but in fact I have no idea what colors I can use to achieve better look. I'm limited to acrylic paints, I tried to mix some colors but mixes looked differently on the model than in the bottle.

I think it is a slightly high.  :)  But its always up to your eye

Really great work on the scheme. I did a version of this but in darker colors on an F-117 and its a lot tougher than it looks. It was really challenging. Well done on this model, M8

I'm thinking about this:

It costs a lot but someday ... :) With aftermarket 1/32 cockpit and a few tweaks it could became a nice display model :)

Folks,

I have a problem with printing decals. I have HP3545 Deskjet (ink) and Techmod Clear Decal Sheet. After printing, markings aren't even, there are visible ink blotches . I have no idea what to against it. Any ideas?

Well, I have right paper, right settings and well-done print file. And another problem surprise surprise...My beautiful decals ale still...TOO DARK!!! I'm running out of patience. They look so right on paper...and almost invisible on model...

I thought about using 1/32 F-15E decals but...they have different color.

There was another try...gray decals were as light gray as they could be. Faliure again. I should print in on white decal paper but then it will be impossible to cut it so precisely to make white decal film invisible. I'll try to find decals for F-4 and F-117 as these airplanes were based in AFB where now F-22 are f.ex. Holloman.

If the decals are mostly gray or black, you can try printing them on a laser printer (make sure you use decal paper that is laser printer compatible!). You can even print them on a color laser printer if you need color, although the results will be somewhat translucent.

No chance. I have only inkjet. There is no color laser printer in my range actually :(

One of members of BTB offered some help (thanks again:) ) so I've tried laser printed decals. However, problem is still the same. Decals look perfect on white paper. On model only darkest decals looks good. Grey ones are nearly invisible. I have to think it over again 'cause I have no idea what to do. There are no aftermarket decals that I could use. I've searched through F-16, F-15, F-117 ... no success. Only F-117 decals looks partially promising. Using masks is my last option but I can make masks for largest letters only  :icon_twisted:

Time to finish this toy :)

Two months ago I've ordered some custom decals, here, in Poland. They've come to me a week ago :) Now this baby is finished in , let's say 90% :D

Wow!  Considering what you started with this has certainly come out looking a lot better for the amount of work you have put into this project.  Well done!
