On the bench
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:54:06 AM »
I'm finally going to follow through with something I said I was going to do. Here is the latest mod to my F-15SE (single engine). I just wasn't happy with the look of the jet, but could never put my finger on the problem. Finally, while trying to work out a plausable fuel load to feed the monster engine, I remembered the CFTs on the F-16. I went and found two more conformal tank for the Strike Eagle and this what I came up with... Also, the paint work will be simplier so I have more of a chance of finishing in my lifetime.

Looking good Eddie!  The sanded finish on the model give it an almost liquid effect at first glance as if it is rising out of the water or some dark liquid.

Just a meger suggestion.........how hard would it be to blend the aft part of the canopy into the new spine, ala OA-4M?

That's looking very good indeed.  So, what kind of engine are we looking at?  I'd guess it's a military engine based on the core of one of the engines for the 787 or A380 (different,  multi-stage, low by-pass ratio fan with afterburner on the back - and likely some material changes for the harsher military operating environment).  I'd hazard a guess that you're using a nozzle from a next scale larger F-16 or F-15.

First off, it's very good to know your here. 8) Second, you're right on top of your game. That's exactly what I've done. Here are the build up photos, including how I dealt with merging the two intakes into one.

I will investigate your suggestion because it would probably give a more streamline look.  I'll post my experiment that I'm doing on another project to see if it's feasible. :)

Oh, very nicely done on that inlet et al.  If I was doing this in 1/72, I'd probably incorporate the fan face and inlet shroud from Lindberg's toy "1/72 Harrier" for that, leaving the remainder of the engine to go with the 1/72 vac-form Harrier from Poland (only Harrier kit I know of where the wing is actually one-piece and could be used for an engine change diorama).

Now, for something completely different for me. To boldly go where I've not been before. Here's the bits I'm working with right now, while I refurbish two other hanger queens. This next build was inspired by my childhood love of the space program and one of our very own, BdaB, the Deacon of Drop tanks. I've got a lot of drops in the spares box, so I thought put them to use. The main body of the big one is a Shuttle SRB and the capsules are the nose end of a 1/32 guns pod. No real rhyme or reason, just something I felt compelled to do.  The aircraft is a refurb of a B-58 engine that's moving forward on it's new mission.

Actually, it's two. This one and one of the old Monograms with wings that fold. Also, since I came back here, I have an idea for the old 1/32 F4U I've started as well. It all depends on a set of old decals staying together. They will make or break the bent wing bird. More pix soon to show what's in the pipe line soon....

And a little history... Here's a pic of the little Model Whisperer in his dungeon back in the 70s. You can see a 1/32 Corsair to the left, on the table is the yellow lightning bolts of a 4 plane Blue Angel Display WIP and the USS Arizona on the shelf. Bean bag, G.I. Joes, Legos and maroon pants are a dead give away pretaining to the time period. ;D

Thank you Jeffry. I actually pinched the idea from Mr. Howling Mouse and his famous Morsair. I just happened to have a Corsair and Bearcat ready to donate their bodies to science. The only change is I had to go back to the original wing tops as the old Hawk wings ( got as part of a gift from my FIL bought in a garage sale) have ailerions that is too big to spend time fixing.  :)

Evening Gents! A little more progress on the Bearsair, and an addition to the bench, a Marine Cobra. I got this little buzzsaw for a rather nice price and decided that's what I need to clease the plalate as it were. :)

The wings are not installed yet because of some minor fit issues, but this is the direction of the look of the aircraft.

The Cobra as it sit right now. I've been mezmorized by it and can not stop working on it. I think the final paint scheme will be pleasing and will also be an honor to our Marine friends out there.  :)

Having to shim the cockpit sill a bit , but no real hiccups so far...

Man that Bearsair is starting to really come together!

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of my favorites.

Nice work, Eddie!

Alrighty then....

Jusy for fun, I added an Academy 1/72 Wildcat to the fray...

Though the cockpit is nearly void of detail, I added just a bit because I was bored with watching paint dry and looking for a Cobra part that fell into a blackhole, which has since returned on the other side of the univ.. I mean bench.

....somemore work on the Bearsair. It can be seen where I had to provide space to conform to the Corsair fuselage,

After gluing and sanding and adding some bits here and there.

Wow! That's quite an air wing you've got on the bench there, Eddie!

Looks like you're having an absolute blast!

More work that has crossed my bench recently. Someo f it in progress, near completion and maybe one finish. either way, I've tried to stay busy doing the things that may never get done tomorrow....

A recent idea from BdaB's radial build. My SBDC

the other projects....

This is a B-58 engine that I'm making into a parasite fighter for a canard B29.

What you are doing with Dauntless is so right on and the parasite fighter is a bashers inspiration :)
What scale B-58 is engine from?

The Cobra as it sit right now. I've been mezmorized by it and can not stop working on it. I think the final paint scheme will be pleasing and will also be an honor to our Marine friends out there.  :)

These are looking great Eddie  :) SBDC looks like a serious warplane.

Whats going on with the Phantoms and (masked and ready to be painted?) A-7?

Thanks for the reminder about the Cobra. My Girl joined the MCROTC at school. Doing very well in all the activities. So this might be a gift to her when she finishes her first year.

I'm painting the Cobra in the colors of the Dress Blues ( Black, blues, white, red, gold). I'm thinking it's gonna look real sharp. Painting is hit and miss right now. I paint outside and sometimes when it's too cold, I have to wait. Sooooo.... that means pix coming soon... :)

The B-58 engine is 1/48. I've got a B-58 partially built with 3 engines set up in a pattern a la the DC-10 to finish someday....

I'd also like to add the the Phantoms are in slow projects. I got them this far, because it makes the finish less time intensive. In other words. One can never have too many Phantoms in progess. Ya never know when the urge to build a Rhino tootsweet will take hold.... 8)
