The goal:
1/48 McDonnell attack aircraft.
The kit:
1/48 Monogram F-4 (any) Phantom, two kits needed, one in posession. The others are locked away in the divorce procedings....and likely to remain for a while.
The challenge:
Low budget, visually interesting spurious conversion.
The plan:
To make a not-F3H-G/F-4A/F-4B relative of the Phantom Phamily.....name to be determined...possibly along the lines of a Voodoo curse....or some such McDonnell think of the era.
-
The ideas thus far:
Small radome similar to earliest F-4A prototypes
Thin wing, F-4B wheel/tires.
Flat wing.
Leading edge extension resulting in increased sweep.
Revised intakes similar to the Aurora-tooled Phantom.
Extended upper rear fuselage.
Revised tailplane in its entirety.
Canopy painted black as all my paints, thinners, and airbrush are locked up precluding a great cockpit effort.
Completion goal: 1 year. I have every other weekend free and part of that is spent with film photography.
Debating:
Conversion to single seat
-
I will be following this one as it progresses. Sounds like an interesting build, and you've laid out some intriguing changes.

Well, now, I could possibly help here, I've got more than one of the Falcon 1/48 conversions for the F4H-1/F-4A with the low canopy and small radome (note, if you're going single-seater, the low canopy makes sense, cover over the back seat area as an avionics bay). It also has, IIRC, the early curved intakes. I only need one to take the canopy from for a single-seat derivative of the F-4E, so I've got a spare.

Can't get any better deal than that!
I'll get out my book of Voodoo spells and see if I can put a T tail curse on your project.......

Don't forget the real world dedicated ground attack Phantom studies here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=376.15)

You might consider re-doing the tail more along the lines of the original F-101 mockup which was far closer to the XF-88's configuration than the T-tail that was built.
As for a name, perhaps appropriating the "Spectre" name given, in RL, to the F-110A? Alternatively, perhaps "Phantasm" would work?
-
I've not seen photos of the 101 mockup and is the first I've heard of a non-T tail.
Spectre....I'd thought of that. Spook or Mudspookand maybe. Hexwitch perhaps.
I think the kit in hand is going to be the auxiliary kit donating fuselage bits and wing chunks. It's moulded like a corkscrew! :icon_twisted: Geeze. The QC people must have been texting their friends when this came out of the steel.
Evan, thanks for the offer....with legals in place, that'll have to be a non-starter this time around. Thanks though!
-
I'd be willing to donate it as a gift if that would help with the legals. Let me do a bit of digging, I know I've got a picture of that mockup, or sources I can scan it from if I can't find it.
Oops, sorry about that. The incorrect image has been removed. Had some other photos mixed in with the aircraft ones.
Note, a photo of the F-101 mockup with cruciform tail can be found in the F-101 thread of the "Inspiration" forum where I posted it sometime back.

You've made an old man go weak at the knees! :P
