Airfix F-5E. What if the Army Air Corps never became the USAF?
« on: November 27, 2013, 11:59:41 AM »
I saw  a thread on the Ideas & Inspiration sub-forum of what-ifs for the F-5/F-20 family. I built this one OOB earlier this year. The Navy had throwback on their planes for the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation, so why couldn't Uncle Sammy's Air Force do the same. This is my take on the idea.
This is a simple OOB build with Humbrol paint and decals scrounged up from the scrap-box. Adios, Larry.

The guy who invented the current all-grey schemes would have a heart attack if he saw that, Lo-Viz it is NOT! :)

But it looks great, what a superb idea.

I've got a real soft-spot for the old Yellow Wings scheme and you certainly pulled it off masterfully, Larry!

That's one of the sweetest F-5s I've ever seen!

If the Army was in charge of air power we would still have OD green tops and grey undersides!
Great job on the F-5.

In all fairness, that one was a mix of all the different schemes the 111th FIS had flown throughout their history rather than one specific scheme in time.  It makes a big difference.

This one is definitely beautiful, though.  I wonder how a B-1B would look in a cheme flown on a B-10?

The USAAF in WW2 was still part of the Army and they were not using bright colors like this...

Where was the reference to WW2?

Besides, here is a scheme worn in 1939 at least:

I also believe Larry was imitating this well known, real world F-16 to a degree:

Personally, I would love to see a F-15 in something similar.  Hint, hint...

How about a F-15 in markings similar to those flown on P-26's, especially some of the more colorful ones?  Damn, I'm giving myself ideas.

Why, yes, something like that, with the blue and yellow wrapping around the nose somewhat like the scheme flown for a while on 71-0292 in faux-T-Bird/Bicentennial markings.

I can actually envisage an F-15, or even an F-4 in those colours! ;D
