Hello everyone!
I've recently joined the Secret Projects.co.uk site and posted there some renderings of 3d models i made of unbuilt aircraft projects. For many of those projects there have been only 3-views until now but in my opinion, for their beauty, they deserved to be seen from more angles.
Yesterday GTX kindly invited me to post here too, and having been a long time lurker on this site i think this is indeed a good time to register as a member.
Here are some my works.
-
Some more.
-
Again some more (i'm afraid it seems like i'm limited at only four attachments per post).
-
The software i use are Autodesk 3ds Max 2015 for the 3d and i use Gimp 2.8 for the textures on the models.
Here a Scaled Composites Model 78 as a parting upload for now ;)
Kind regards.
-
That supersonic Hawk and Bf 165 are lovely. Welcome!
Cheers,
Logan
-
Welcome aboard. I like the Scaled Composites Model 78.

Thank you!

I hope Pedrospe won't mind that i took inspiration for this scene from his FA-XX model ;)
-
Your Scaled 78 is particularly good-looking! :-*

If anyone has a personal pet project or would like to see a "woulda/coulda/shoulda" aircraft, suggestions are welcome ;)
Regards.
-
Would you/could you invent a supersonic jet P-38 Lightning? :)
-
Erm...unfortunately my fantasy is utterly limited, and this is why i mostly do renders of unbuilt or close to reality projects (for which there are at least a couple of side views), so i don't think i could pull that off.
I'd start from a P-38, then i'd pick an arrow wing, put twin jet engines in the back, change the twin boom layout, change this and that and...before i knew it, it would look like an F-15 ???
-
Love the Hawk, is that the EJ200 powered proposal?
How about a supersonic thin wing Sea Vixen or I have also heard there was a more highly swept, more powerful Sea Venom offered instead of Sea Vixen. Is this more the sort of thing you were talking about?
-
Yes, it's the EJ200 proposal :)
Regarding the Sea Vixen and the Sea Venom i found only their blacked-out silhouettes from top view, do you know if there are any 3 views of those projects?
Here are some renders of the CAC CA-23, which i had forgotten to post here (thanks GTX for the reminder).

And Ed Horkey's Twin Mustang racer project, which i think Tophe might like!
:icon_crap: Ahem, no, sorry: I do not "like", I LOVE VERY MUCH :-* :-* Thanks a lot! Wow! Could you tell us more about your source concerning this? Just imagination? (that would be great in either way, project-based or fantasy-based) I feel happy, thanks.
-
I found a different aspect at http://www.minimakety.cz/dvacetinky/models/2008/Horkey/index-en.php?img=1&nick=G1 (http://www.minimakety.cz/dvacetinky/models/2008/Horkey/index-en.php?img=1&nick=G1)
Do you have a source profile? I invented one for my (free) book Virtual Mustangs, but I am willing to correct myself. :)
-
I started from a side view i found on secretprojects.uk, and while looking at it i thought that, had it been built, it would have looked more similar to racers like Voodoo and Miss Ashley II (an aircraft i absolutely love) if its aim was to break speed records.
There was another top view of it too, with non-asymmetrical fuselages, but i thought that this version, with its Rutan-esque look, was more intriguing than the conventional one.
Regards.
-
Love the CA-23! :)

From the instructions from the Uncle Les 1/72 CAC CA-31 resin kit:
And some photos I took of the full size Ca-31 mockup in the back of the Australian National Aviation Museum, at Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne, Australia.
The mock-up was disassembled and against one wall (easily missed). Pics were taken with my phone a couple of years ago:

I love this look, so different and nice! Great invention! (like a XF-107 but more harmonious with its rear air intake to a short jet)
-
It is actually based on the real world Saab Project 2107:

Since you're working on projects that were never built: I'm curious if you'd like some diagrams of the F-23A as it neared production specs? It was posted on http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php (http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php) some time ago and had a few a few differences from the prototypes in that it was slightly longer and had flattened half-cone intakes.
Northrop F-23
I love the F-23 design, and it's interesting that you seem to have realized from one of the images that the (intended) production model had half-cone intakes and was slightly longer.
FMA SAIA 90
Fascinating design: It looks a lot like Northrop's P-530 to P-610 series.
Quite a beautiful aircraft.
Australian P.65
I'm not sure what it was designed for, but boy does that look like it'd have made a great 1950's record buster.
Gloster P.275
It kind of looks like a more practical version of lippisch P.13a
Northrop NATF
Fantastic!

Yes I love this bifusoliera, thanks a lot! :-*

SAIA 90, BAT, Arrow PS-2, F-23B, AT-X2A are tied as my favourites :)
Is either SAIA 90 or AT-X2A s real-world paper projects?

(https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/6fd7/t017r0ustk9ah2t4g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/view/t017r0ustk9ah2t/Tophe_Lenticular_Mirage_-_4a.jpg)
Once French intelligence services got rumors of the development of lenticular air vehicles at the Avro Canada, and in particular of their Project WS 606A, the world famous aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation was immediatly tasked by the French Government with further exploring the viability of the concept and the advantages that could derive from a similar platform.
In less than 9 months an airframe of a Mirage III was skillfully adapted to the innovative wing and the aircraft began testing at the Istres Air Base.
Unfortunately, the program encountered several critical points and on its fifth flight the single prototype built crashed due to an engine malfunction, with the loss of the test pilot, Capitaine Christian Millier. This tragic accident marked the end for the program and no further (or at least, as of yet known) studies were conducted to investigate the performances of lenticular aircrafts.
The above picture was taken near Istres Air Base (the date is unknown but presumably in the early 70s) and just recently leaked to the public.
All credits to Tophe, whose slanting view of the Mirage 5O (see here http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=22.735 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=22.735)), triggered me into realising a 3d variant. I hope he won't mind ;)

SAIA 90, BAT, Arrow PS-2, F-23B, AT-X2A are tied as my favourites :)
Is either SAIA 90 or AT-X2A s real-world paper projects?
AT-X2A was a real project by Aermacchi, a study that predates the M-346. The SAIA 90 too was a real project, by the Argentinian FMA, but my 3d model is slightly different from the 3 views you can find on the net, because i tried to make it more similiar to contemporary studies conducted by Northrop and Dornier with their ND-102.

Unfortunately, i couldn't find any accurate 3 view for it, so this is the best i can do at the moment (btw, i thought that using the canopy of the Griffon I would have made for a better operational aircraft):

Not really detailed, but done just to get the feeling ;)
In addition to MLU rocket-boosted interceptors, I would like to put a F-16 version into my queue of request to you in light of your great F-16-related stuff :)
A re-winged and completely tailless one. (http://www.f-16.net/g3/f-16-photos/album11/album28/aac)
With APG-65 nose, DSI, and LOAN...... and how would you think it would be fully-armed for air combat and strike? ;)
The entry doesn't say if the tailless variant is based on regular F-16 fuselage or F-16XL one...... F-16XL fuselage sounds conducive to the claim of having twice the range as a Super Hornet and can carry four AMRAAMs without the use of pylons although regular F-16 fuselage sounds lighter......
-
a F-16 version
completely tailless one.
I made such a 1/48 tailless F-16 (the F-16SD Simple Delta) in 2010... in the destruction way of desk-models, after changing home.

Hell yeah! Keep 'em coming :)
The G.95/6 looks fast. What were its powerplants to be?

The G.95/6 actually had 8 engines - 6 x RB.162 lift engines plus two RB.153 cruise engines - see lower cutaway:

Good call adding that IRST! :)
Would you mind doing a full air-to-air loadout next? I would like this one without national marking but with something like the aggressor camo used by F-22 (http://www.janetairlines.com/vlb2/data/images2/f22_digital.jpg)?

That G.95/6...... adorable.
Makes me want to see it with a semi-modern (*cough* Aspide *cough*) or modern air-to-air loadout, too...... ;)

2-
This fits into my fascination of hunter-killer team à la Italian Tornado ADV and F-104ASA.
Actually, it brings me to the SAGE air defense network and Joint Surveillance System (or rather any forerunner of Cooperative Engagement Capability). F-104A couldn't carry the datalink equipment of the time, but would the technology of 1980s have been able to miniaturize the equipment for use with such small fighters?

Thanks.

Oh yeah!!!

Nice new planes!
Just a historical question: is the Armada airplane above the Argentinian hero that defeated the Royal Navy during the Malvinas Battle 1982? (called Falklands War by Margaret Thatcher before she receives death penalty 1983, with removal forever of UK's UNO veto right, given to India, France's one being given to Vietnam and US one: to Indonesia, destroying Western aristocratic domination over the World)...
This is a VERY important airplane, so...
;)
-
A whiff of a whiff ;)
'much as I became infatuated with this kind of aircraft lately, I become reminded of a story of Yak-38 melting the flight deck during its first shipboard trial......
Do you happen to have VJ-101 and/or D-188A?
-
Gentlemen, i've been tinkering with an idea. Putting together the various talents and all the knowledge and creativity of everyone who wishes to participate, i'd like to "whiff-up" a fictional T-X proposal based on the real program requirements, in a sort of Beyond the Sprues Skunkworks fashion (or Phantom Works if you prefer Chicago).
Starting from a blank sheet, how would you proceed from there? For example: high wing/low wing? Wing sweep? Lerxes? Single/twin engine? Engine choice? Stealth features or not? Canted tails or not? etc.
All of it by discussing the advantages a choice would have on another if possible.
The aim would be to see how close to any of the real participants we can get.
So...what do you think? ;)
Regards.
-
Interesting project, but... what is T-X program? USAF/USN trainer? with carrier take-off & landing ability? If so, I would choose a biplane layout, to decrease landing speed for the student. And should it be jet-engined fighter-trainer or basic-trainer maybe with turboprop or piston?

Needless to say, IAI engineers kept on upgrading the swedish platform with local systems well into the 80s, when the IAI Rahab took to the skies:

Oooooo...that's wicked! :-* It must be done!!!!
-
Wickedly beautiful. Of course, the next step would be to replace the Avon with something more powerful, like the J79.
-
I think Derby might better fit the fire control capability of EL/M-2032 than AIM-120, but that's just me making uneducated nitpicking on something excellent ;D
-
Wickedly beautiful. Of course, the next step would be to replace the Avon with something more powerful, like the J79.
Didn't Volvo manage 18,000lb of thrust out off their later Avons? An Israeli Draken could actually have seen Israel as the launch customer of a Volvo Avon Phantom.
-
Wickedly beautiful. Of course, the next step would be to replace the Avon with something more powerful, like the J79.
I was thinking the same...although I think a J79 would be too large (dimensionally) to easily slot in where the Avon was. If the update was done in the late '90s or beyond (thus matching with the Kfir C.10 real world timeline), maybe something such as a Snecma M88 or Eurojet EJ200 or maybe even F414 (or F404 if done earlier) with the latte ones possibly in the Volvo RM12*/F414G guise. All of these would probably result in a slight lengthening of the tail though.
Interesting fact that is kind of relevant here: The IAI Nammer (see below) was offered with a F404 orRM12 engine.
-
The J79 looks, from the data, to be 2.3 inches greater in diameter than the afterburning Avon and is rather shorter (by more than 2 meters (5.3 vs. 8)). You'd probably need some cooling scoops, as the J79 does run hotter, but that's not that big a difficulty as the Israelis proved. If memory serves me correctly, the IAPJ article on the J-35 included a side view of a proposed J79-powered version.
Going by the best comparable sets of data I can find online, a RM6C produces 76kN of thrust in burner while a late-model J79 produces 79.3 kN in burner and, if you have the "Combat+" option fitted, 83.7 kN in full burner.
-
I have read that there were plans for an "AS35X" Draken which would have a needle-point nose, larger outer wings with dog-teeth and an American General Electric (GE) J79 engine.
-
Thanks guys!
The idea was to take the J-35 Mod 4 proposal (http://www.airvectors.net/avj35.html#m4 (http://www.airvectors.net/avj35.html#m4)) and mix it with the looks of the IAI Nammer. I originally wanted to change the engine to an F404 powerplant too, but then i read on wiki that, while being somewhat smaller in diameter, it is quite longer than the Avon, so i opted for not doing anything about it.
Regards ;)
-
Looks beautiful, anyway. But the F404/RM12/F414 being longer than the afterburning Avon, I don't think so since the RM12 measures 4.09 M long and the RM6C is some 8M long. Now it is .2M longer than the dry Avon, but much shorter than the afterburning one in the Draken.
PS. Sorry if I came off a bit pedantic here; having just researched and compared the RM6C with the J79, I had most of the numbers I needed to compare with the F404/RM12/F414. I'd dearly love to see a RM12-powered J-35Mod4 with the longer nose (any chance of fieri intakes? I think those would fit the Draken's lines wonderfully).
-
These profiles have me reading up on the Draken and getting some ideas.
I have a Hasegawa F/J Draken that I had planned to do as a very simple RAAF version buy simply adapting a Mirage IIIEO scheme and aftermarket decals, either olive and grey cam or a 79 Sqn low viz example. The premise being the RAAF followed the advice off the original purchasing team and revisited the Draken finding it to be a superior alternative to the Miracle and bought it instead, meaning every scheme and deployment would have been Draken instead of Mirage.
Looking at these I am now thinking in terms of significant upgrades and life extensions as well as a very non-mirage service life with the RAAF reserve as an interceptor rather than it having an additional strike role as the RAAFs mirages did.

I'm off to cast more resin... and possibly use some parts from an F5 I used to make that twin seater a while back !! Thanks again for providing inspiration Citrus. :)

Uncle Les, you'll definitely need larger intakes and possibly blow-in doors like the F-5E/F use, done my share of engine/airframe integration from the airframe structure side. I can't wait to see that one in 1/32 (perhaps we can get a 1/48 kit eventually?).
-
I do like orange but think that the purely gold-plated version is best .... tho it may be a bit prohibitive for the defence budget ;D

An upgraded single-seater with the two J85s replaced by a single F404 as Northrop did?

Changes applied: F-404 engine, deeper intakes, longer nose for radar installation, cockpit with HUD, dog-tooth on wings, extended lerxes, missile rails à la Sepecat Jaguar, undertail fin for stability and for avoiding tail strikes on landing and take off.
I think it just needs Indian air force markings now and being re-branded as the Super CA-31 ;D
Regards.

Hmmm...I have long considered doing a Canadian F-12...This convinces me!
-
Perhaps a RAF SR-71 and F-12B using Gyron Major engines (essentially Gyron evolved the way the J58-P-2 developed into the variant of the J-58 fitting to the SR-71 et al. - the spec's between the Gyron and the J58-P-2 are quite similar).

I have read that there were plans for an "AS35X" Draken which would have a needle-point nose, larger outer wings with dog-teeth and an American General Electric (GE) J79 engine.

I'm surely interested in doing them!
They're some of the most fascinating design ever studied for the same competition, and i've already started putting together infos on the AW.169.

Cool really cool, especially the P.103, I'd never heard of it before but wow. Never ceases to amaze me at how innovative the UKs military and advanced industry has consistently been but how badly they have been let down of even deliberately hamstrung by politicians and sinfully short sighted financial and service industries.

That too but unfortunately far too many of them were better connected than there competent contemporaries. Them and those so arrogant they were knowingly ignorant and would not back down or modify their stance no matter the cost, i.e. Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis. Many of you may be familiar with the story of the mini, they sold it for less than it cost to build and it was release with a multitude of easily fixed problems, not because it wasn't realised or couldn't be fixed but because of the driving force of Issigonis' personality, even upon exiting a pilot vehicle with his legs soaked half way up his calves and his shoes squelching , he responded that he didn't see a problem with the cars water tightness and there was no need for change.
Then there was Lord Nuffield, completely stuffed up prewar Spitfire production at Castle Bromwich, who instead of delivering the 50 aircraft a month promised, by may 1940 not a single one had been delivered. His involvement (responsibility) for the cruiser tank debacle should have seen him gaoled, there is not only the time and effort wasted building Cavaleirs and Centaurs instead of Cromwells but his deliberate actions to ensure the resulting vehicle turned out the way he wanted not what the Army had been asking for, better armour protection first, then better gun, preferably 3" or better (75mm HV), and more reliable, even at the expense of speed. On reliability, did you guys know Nuffield delivered Crusaders without lubrication, the tanks were apparently driven onto rail cars, transporters, holding yards and docks without any engine oil! Any wonder why they suffered from mechanical reliability by the time they got to the troops!
Then there was Napier, so fixated on increasing power of the Sabre but did almost nothing to improve reliability or to sort out manufacturing issues. Yep very well away of some (but nowhere new all) of the issues UK industry had (still have looking at some of BAEs antics), hard, very hard to believe they were among the worlds best at so many things at the start of the 20th century. One theory I am inclined to favour is, following WWI and the economic troubles thereafter, many of the UKs best, most competent, capable and ethical companies struggled in competition with other better connected (less ethical) and though otherwise, less impressive competitors. Yes men and establishment men did well, others not so, not saying its fact, nor am I suggesting it is so simple or always the case, its just the impression I get quite often reading about many British companies, projects and politically linked decisions.

I couldn't have said it better. There are some projects that were incredibly fascinating and quite ahead of their times too. One such was the MUSTARD shuttle projects, of which i knew nothing till some weeks ago and that left me awe-struck.
Too bad, really...
-
That Arrow is awesome!
It seems every innovative idea I here about and think is so clever the Brits have already done it. This issue is after two world wars they just couldn't afford it anymore and those holding the purse strings often lacked vision.
-
That's an awesome Arrow. It may get appropriated for wallpaper.
Sometimes it doesn't take much to really screw up a project (*grump!!* I could tell some stories from the B-2A), but problems at higher level don't help.

just wondering, are your drawings available as STL. type files, they would be ideal as 3D prints :)

Probably going to sound ridiculous but how about Australian Army Aviation Mirage 2000C and D?
Been toying with an AU for a while where in WWII Australia forms and deploys an AEF or Australian Expeditionary Force with tactical aviation fully integrated within the original Australian Corps that was deployed to the Middle East and Europe. This integrated aviation structure is maintained post war using primarily British types, Tempest, Fury, replacing wartime Hurricane, Henley, Typhoon. Then progressing through Hawk (land based Seahawk), Canberra / B-57, P.1081, Hunter, various super Hunters, before going French when the British get out of the fast combat jet game, Mirage III, IV, F1, supplementing attack roled Hunters, Jaguar, then Mirage 2000 C and D, Rafale serving along side Harriers.

How about a Israeli one?
Like this? ;)

It looks very impressive, and a true light-weight fighter. I don't know how well it was to perform, but it looks like it would compare favorably with the F-5's, and possibly better.

Ukrainian F-4's are nice & I quite like the Air America Walrus. :)

Walrus in Air America livery wins! :)

Mind you, the Walrus in Coastal Command colours has the potential to trip up a few JMN's. ;)

How about an Israeli one or even a RAF one but in colours similar to the Lysander below for SOE missions?

Love the F-4s! O0

The Lysander is a hard one, I just can't help liking it though I know it was in actual fact an abomination, the epitome of the RAFs complete miss understanding of the army's needs.

Great stuff! Love the idea of an SOE Walrus :)
(Volkodav: To be fair, all contemporary air forces ... and armies ... missed the built-in obsolescence of classic army co-operation aircraft.)

Great stuff! Love the idea of an SOE Walrus :)
(Volkodav: To be fair, all contemporary air forces ... and armies ... missed the built-in obsolescence of classic army co-operation aircraft.)
Sad but true, though quite bizarre when you look at aircraft such as the Hawker Hector etc. of just a few years earlier, which was basically a modified, high performance, light bomber. Hawker Henley may have been a better basis, or even a (shock horror) Blackburn Skua.
-
CiTrus90, for aesthetic purposes, can I request that your RAAF F-5E's and RF-5E's be placed on the same grey background as you have done with your F-4E Phantom II's? :P
Could I also request your profile talents for some profiles of the CAC CA-31, in both single and two-seat configurations?
If able and willing, could I request some of these to be in RAAF Citizen Air Force Squadrons colours, markings and a variety of weapons configurations (for my 'Alternative ADF ORBAT' backstory I'm working on!). Could these be in the camouflage Mirage IIIO 1970's and F/A-18A/B 1980's schemes?
Thanks for the consideration

ascetics
Aesthetics, perhaps, mate? ;)
ascetic (əˈsɛtɪk/); noun; plural noun: ascetics - a person who follows an ascetic life.
synonyms: abstainer, recluse, hermit, solitary, anchorite, anchoress, celibate, puritan, nun, monk
aesthetics (iːsˈθɛtɪks,ɛs-/); noun; noun: aesthetics; noun: esthetics - a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty; the branch of philosophy which deals with questions of beauty and artistic taste.
Of course, ascetic could be applied to some here to some extent (myself included). :)

I suppose it's a good thing I had already been working on it (at least on the twin seater) ;D
(https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/6494/luman2pbedp8wbp6g.jpg)
I'm not really satisfied by what I came up with, to be honest. I used the only two side views I've found on the net, and then re-traced everything, adding some details here and there.
It's not at all accurate.
I compared it with the few photos of the mockup available (I suppose they were all taken by our very own GTX_Admin), and there are things that simply do not match up with any side view. I tried to use the pics as a basis to start my own lineart, but then again, the mockup is disassembled and I'd need a clear shot from the side perpendicular to the aircraft (otherwise I'm not able to correct for distortions due to the angle from where the pics where taken).
I'd like to make a better effort, but this is only what I can do at the moment.
If you can provide some pictures as references for me to use (for squadron markings too), sure.
Cheers!

Well, then what if...
Similarly to what happened with the joint partnership between Soko and IAR, that in the 70s produced respectively the Soko J-22 Orao and the IAR-93 Vultur, during the 90s the two aircraft manufacturer get once more together to develop a new 4th-generation, supersonic multi-role combat aircraft.
The aircraft, developed under the joint project name of "Novi Avion", are co-produced by the two countries, but receive different designations, in this spawning a Yugoslav variant, dubbed Soko J-23 Mišar (Buzzard), and a Romanian version, called IAR-105 Vampir (Vampire).

I didn't know about this Saab project...I :-* it...and I also like the scheme of Italian Eurofighter...still can't get used to that ww1 Italian roundel.Great job Luca
-
I like the RAAF Eurofighter, it was actually an unsolicited offer as a replacement for the F-111 in the early 2000s, ironically BAE and the opposition were told to get stuffed by the government as the F-111 apparently didn't need to be replaced and could serve through to 2020 if needed :P
Live and learn, live and learn; I suppose at least it wasn't as big a brain fart as announcing to the worlds media that Australia was going to commit an armoured brigade (which we haven't had since WWII) to the invasion of Iraq, or announcing with great fanfare that the Collins class submarines had been fixed because one boat had been fitted with a new combat system, despite the fact that the cost of the new system was so high and installing it took so long that there wasn't enough money left to properly maintain the rest of the fleet and there weren't enough boats available to train the crews to operate them (or replace the sailors who left the navy due to low moral and better offers in civy street).

Corrected pic 1 and 3 on the advice of Old Wombat (from HMAS Nowra to the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney) ;)
-
It's a matter of taste, for example I like more the first scheme, but all look great.
:)
-
I love them all! Thank you :)

Um, can I point out that it's NAS Nowra, which is the shore establishment HMAS Albatross? ???
To my knowledge there is not, & never has been a HMAS Nowra. ::)
However, in the spirit of Whiffness, I shall assume that HMAS Nowra is an aircraft carrier of unknown class. ;)

And here's the potential for a whiff story: what if well into the 2020s the idea of an European military force takes shape? Once the US Navy starts receiving the Ford Class aircraft carriers, the EU jointly procures a couple of the now dissmissed Nimitz Class carriers, rechristining them as the Europa and the Minerva.
They are manned by a multinational crew and the flight squadrons on board still retain their national markings, together with an EU flag on the vertical tail.
Here's a couple of examples from the Europa carrier, which sails in the northern seas:

My favorite one in this batch is the red one with propeller. What is this ? An Italian racer? The picture name seems b19a/txee1awgim39i7v6g.jpg and is not very clear for me, or macchi M.39? I have not checked yet, please tell us... ;)

I'd never seen the Ford 15P before! Are the wings swept back? I googled it and the only top view I found was of Gabriel Stern's 1/72 scratchbuit model, but from the pictures of the real plane and your drawing, they don't seem to have much of a sweep.
-
Thanks for the CS15 info and link.
And congratulations for the new pictures :-*

I used a 3 view uploaded on the Secret Projects Forum as a basis.
I've seen the model you're talking about, with the swept wings, but once I looked at the pictures of the real aircraft I realized the wings were simply not swept back at all. I honestly don't know why he built his model that way.

Thanks!

To be fair, I don't think so.
There was a degree of research done, standing by what he wrote at the end of the thread:
I would like to thank Mike Fletcher and Jim Schubert for their help with this project.
Gabriel
I think it's just a mistake, pretty much like I did with the air intakes on the engine compartment on my model (4 instead of 6, d'oh!).
Link to the model in question right here: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal8/7501-7600/gal7523-Ford-15P-Stern/00.shtm (http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal8/7501-7600/gal7523-Ford-15P-Stern/00.shtm)

Thanks for the clarification. It does look more 30's like with the straight wings. I know Gabriel Stern tries to be accurate (even when building aircraft that never flew) so I'd chalk this to a reference error on his part. Still looks good, just not the same as the real design.

Really liked the Phantom (which area always phreakishly phantastic to me, being a St. Louis native) and the Gripen. Is it me, or does the Gripen look a bit like the Convair model 200?

It's not you - there is a definite resemblance, though the Model 200 did have lift engines:

In fact, if you wanted to do a VTOL Gripen, you would probably get something akin to the Model 200...though you might want to borrow some sub-scale F-14 intakes.

Funny that. I see the Model 200s intakes as being somewhat more derivative of the NA Vigilante's intakes. Have to wonder whether the Convair guys ever considered a shaft-driven lift fan in front, as opposed to the lift engines. Perhaps at that time it may not have been possible. Cool design. It's on my rendering/illustration list.
-
Vigilante intakes would probably work as well. Of course, now you have me thinking of a VTOL Vigilante with multiple lift engines... :-\

Probably not that hard with the linear bomb bay.

Feel sure those paintings were in aviation magazines (Air Progress?) of the 1960s.
