Title: Mitsubishi J2M Raiden Ideas and Inspiration
Post by: GTX_Admin on March 04, 2012, 04:04:39 AM
Hi folks,

A thread for your Mitsubishi J2M Raiden Ideas and Inspiration.

To start with, what about a carrier based J2M?

Regards,

Greg

Carrier based would sure be neat.  Would love to see how it would of compared to the F8F in a straight dogfight.

Other ides that come to mind are parasite fighter and a post-war racer.

Could paint it in Luftwaffe colors and hang it under a Zeppelin or one of those massive "Amerika Bomber" projects they were working on.  Might look pretty cool with some sort of trapeze apparatus on the top.

Cut down the canopy, strip the guns, soup up the engine, and paint it in some really garish colors and you have one snazzy little racer.

Yes, does look like it can be a racer.  That would be different have in air races.

Great ideas guys...I especially love the post war racer idea! :)

I did a few profiles of the type back in the day.  Spanish Civil War, Luftwaffe & Kriegsmarine markings amongst them.

It would need some stretching, but how about a post-war derivative with a R4360 (or a similar concept built around existing Japanese engines)?  Cooling would be a challenge and you'd likely have to stretch the aft fuselage for weight and balance considerations but 'twould look cool.

Maybe the Kamikaze idea never caught on...

Title: Stretched Mitsubishi J2M Raiden?
Post by: sequoiaranger on March 08, 2012, 07:42:03 AM
I like the look of the Raiden, and had thought of stretching a Raiden fore-and-aft, and then adding wingspan, until I realized I would just end up with a "Reppu"!!! :-\

I was looking more into a Reno style racer version of the Raiden - I was actually thinking of a clipped wing variant - when I came across this:  http://www.flickriver.com/photos/wbaiv/sets/72157605464434859/ (http://www.flickriver.com/photos/wbaiv/sets/72157605464434859/)

That racer would need an awfully long runway to get off and it'd be great in straight lines but trying to get it around the pylons?  It'd have to be nicknamed the "Maggie"!   ;)

I'm thinking that they'd develop a bubble that fit with the existing windshield and supporting structure, much as was done on the Mustang.  That does suggest an interesting alternate development, a Japanese equivalent of a Malcolm Hood for the Raiden.

My dad and I were discussing just such a concept yesterday.

Cheers,

Seeing as the Raiden looks like a bloated Zero, a Zero style canopy makes the most sense.

Pilotless kamikaze.  No canopy/fairing.

Anachron.

There's an interesting bit in Japanese Aero Engines, 1910 - 1945 where they mention that the Aichi engine derived from the DB601 (as used in the D4Y-1, -2, and the M6A1) was considered early on for the J2M1; they went for an air-cooled engine instead but it would be interesting to meld the engine and radiator installation from the M6A1 (by all accounts, a better and cleaner installation than in the D4Y1) with the Raiden airframe.

Maybe use the Ki-61 -> Ki-100 as an inspiration for what a DB01 Raiden would look like?
Title: Re: Mitsubishi J2M Raiden Ideas and Inspiration

Given the Ki-100 went from a inline liquid cooled to an air cooled radial wouldn’t it be the other way around?

Re using an in-line for the J2M, one could also take the long nosed, liquid cooled Fw-190s as a guide and give the J2M an annular radiator to give a different look. Maybe even use a ducted propeller?

If they had proceeded with the DB type engine in the design of the J2M then it would
not of had the fat-Zero look to the airframe. There would have been no reason for
the round fuselage cross-section, it would have had a rectangular/oval cross-section
conforming closely to the engine dimensions, pretty much just like almost every other
V engined aircraft of the period.
 ;D

So trying to stick a DB style nose onto a Raiden fuselage makes zero sense.  ;)

What about a post war captured Chinese version or even a Manchoukuo Air Force one?
