ZSU-30R - Life Extension for Shilka Platform - Done !
« on: September 04, 2020, 02:04:27 PM »
With a due nod for the inspiration to get his started to Dizzyfugu on Whatifmodellers.
I have been cleaning out my attic area and three odd days ago fossicked out this old Dragon ZSU-27 Shilka and the equally old Dragon BRDM 2 Gaskin  into the "Should I stay or should I go" (Thanks The Clash) pile.

Clearly in their pre-loved state, could not bear to bin them, so went to work on the Shilka of a number of years ago.
I must have glued it together with Clag, because the tracks were self destructing and all the bits came of suspiciously easy.
Dug out the Rotary Cannon that did not make another build and bluetack on, that was enough for me to proceed as it looked ok. Then tried some Gaskins from the BRDM to sort of keep
the timeline consistent.

Some enlargement of the ammo hoppers and other bits still to come. Could be a quick build though because it is really not getting a too major make over.

Of course had to try this

I reckon there is room for a bit of ridiculous.. so this might get a run as well.

Progress! On a roll this weekend. Not doing the model I should be doing, but then.. that happens.
Fleshed out the Turret some more. Added some etch that was hanging around filling up a drawer

Only downer is I am short some track links, so this might end up in mud on a base if I cannot find enough to get by.
Not that interested to cast any up either.

Nice revamp!

Regarding the track links. Couldn't you just cut some of those in contact with the ground in half? You'd probably not see those inside faces under the hull anyway. Just so there is something on the outside that can be muddied up suitably. If muddied up, just about any track link of a somewhat comparable shape would probably suffice.

How about side skirts? Saving modellers from having to assemble at least a third of their indy-link tracks since... the birth of indy-link tracks probably.  ;D

Or a dio where one side of the tank is obscured by some ground feature/doodad that blocks the view of the tracks. You could then assemble one side without any gaps. One of those Gaskin containers , largish box, parked next to a wall, camo netting,.....

Here's an Abrams and a Bradley standing in a shallow stream.

Cheers,
Moritz

All good ideas. I'm just prompting for a worn Winter camo scheme. ;)

After much harrumphhing, wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth, I busted out my terribly out of date rubber and resin and made some 3rd grade castings of some track. Pretty ordinary, but will stand up to a casual glance

Winter Scheme.....yeah, yeah, Naah! Sorry Guy, for better or worse, here it is firstly in the original Green I was going to do

Then on a whim went the Finnish, 3 Tone Splinter scheme, well sort of.

Well, the lead singer of Nightwish is certainly more fun to look at than the guy from Heavy Trip ... and there's less projectile vomiting too  ;)

Frank: Thanks for Heilung - truly amazing stuff!  Kind of barbarian industrial folk

Whoa.. Frank... Heilung... awesome, plus a bit of Floor as well.. love Nightwish (not getting drawn on the Tarja vs Floor debate)

The comments in the Heilung clip are as entertaining as the ProtoNorse Feasting Hall Party.

Oh.. by the way, yes the base is my work

Excellent work on that base! Just enough going on there to be convincing but not so much that its distracting

Another cool design and another great job. Camo came out great.

Reminds me of the T-249 Vigilante.

I had to look up Tarja Turunen (sounds like a character from an Ivan Reitman production).

she's healthy

.... oh yeah, kick ass modernized Shilka build.
