Something to think over .....

It's clear from various articles that Russia in the 1950s was considering having to fight in (very) boggy terrain - their Object-279 "saucer" tank with 4 tracks was designed with this partially in mind.  Other articles show that they were looking at air-cushion "hover" tanks too.  There are many boggy areas in western Russia & across to the Baltic that caused problems for the Germans & escaping Allied prisoners in WW2, tho they are often heavily wooded & prevent vehicles of any sort accessing the area.

So what would the West's response have been if they had to fight Russia in such terrain east of Germany during a hot (but not nuclear) cold war ?? I can't imagine that Cockrane's hover-craft would have been fast-tracked in Britain but maybe by Canada or the US ? .... a SRN-1 with mg-turret & some armour shields, a SRN-4 battle-ship ?  Pity there are no SRN-6 PACVs in plastic yet ... tho, years ago, I did have a very nice little one out of a Kellogs box :)

I know there were several archimedes screw type vehicles designed since 1914 & Russia still uses a few for scientific work - they have their benefits & drawbacks ....

The Studebaker M29 Weasel was designed for that very purpose in addition to their use in snow and marginal terrain where the low ground pressure kept the vehicle from sinking in to the muck.  Mind you the amphibious ability was limited due to the very low freeboard but it was capable of floating.  The M29C was fitted with buoyancy tanks fore and aft to improve address the low freeboard issue.

Always one of the coolest-looking vehicles of this period. Lots of stuff you could do with it.

SRN-6 PACV? No sech animal. The USN PACV's were Bell SK-5, the US Army versions were SK-5A. The SK-5 were license built SRN.5, the SK-5A were a heavily modified variation.

SRN-1 would never be a military vehicle, simply not large enough or powerful enough.

The other US vehicle designed for marginal terrain were the M49 and M76 Otter:



It wasn't armoured.   It saw some action in and around Khe Sanh in South Vietnam.  It used, unusually for a tracked vehicle, pneumatic tyres on it's road wheels to increase floatation.

There was also IIRC a "Beaver" tracked vehicle but I can't find any online pictures of it.  Hunnicutt discusses it in his book on APCs.

yes the Weasel, Otter & Muskrat would all be good in varying degrees.

The SRN-1 would need an up-rated engine for sure but would be good because of its small size (for a hovercraft).

Here's just two of the projects the Russians considered & one German contraption - the Lauster- Wargel 7/II ...
