Stiff upper lip when verbally talking about the kit to another modeller:  Yep it's the Tamiya kit.  Then watch the eyes of the listener closely as either a spark of humor or shock of waste sets in.

Definitely a nice surprise and about damned time too.  Prior to this there was a vacuum-formed plastic kit and a couple of resin kits in 1:35th scale.

"Once upon a time", some 50 years ago, Tamiya did a number of basic 1/72 aircraft.  I've got a couple of their J7W1 kits (both domestic and export boxings - same art work but a distinct difference in choice of background colors).  For a long time, 'til Hasegawa did modern ones, theses were the only 1/72 J7W1 kits available.

Every time they do that they screw with the dimensions of the subject & the fit of the parts & they leave those bloody annoying voids under & around the track guards (often so that the electric motors get airflow to cool them.

When I was active duty in the Air Force a group of us from my squadron went to Ft Hunter Ligget, Ca. to control the aircraft for the testing of this beast. I wasn't privilege to all the details but the reaction of the vehicle was under whelming. Actually no reaction at all most of the time. Stories that came out later said the radar would try to track the ends of the gun barrels among other problems.

BTW: I have measured some figures in standing attitude. 34 mm tall with shoes and cap. Multiplying by 48 1,630 mm. Certainly not very tall. They are probably 1/52.

That project was a case study on how to screw up systems engineering on a Test and Evaluation course I did through work a few years back.  Apparently the radar (based on that of the F-16, used to pick up the barrel muzzles at high elevations, identify them as a legitimate target and send the whole thing into a melt down trying to come up with a targeting solution.  Then again Phalanx fitted to the hanger roof of an FFG literally gets twitchy when helicopter come into land, mistaking rotor tips as fleeting missile contacts.

Tamiya has shown off an new release of the IDF M51 Sherman in 1/35 scale.  The new kit will be released with Aber photo-etched details, and from the built demo, it looks very well done.

Looking at what Israel did makes me wonder what could have been achieved during WWII or even just after if the need had arisen.  For instance a British MkIVCY Sherman (M-4A3 with 17pdr and HVSS), maybe notional MkIVDY or MkIVEY with 20pdr and 105mm respectively.

The usual moaning, of course.   

It looks really good, and not unexpected following their release of the Ki-61 last year that
came with a representation of a DB engine. It comes with interchangeable open and closed
cowlings, I believe their first use on a 1/48th aircraft of the mini-magnets used on their
1/32 kits.

I won't get one, never a fan of the type, but it bodes well for their 1/48 line.

Yes, but it's a new Tamiya with their current standard of design and production, and
the first 109G in their catalog. Other companies kits don't make any ¥$€ for Tamiya.

I suppose the first two will have the most whiffing potential. Haven't seen that many motorbike whifs yet. Although I wonder whether you could use some neodymium magnets to make a hoverbike? 
It only took Tamiya seven years to scale-down their standard-setting 1/48 F-16 to 1/72. Guess seven years isn't too long to wait for a 1/72 Tamiya Tomcat.
