Hello from Freightdog,

After a long period of unavailability we are planning a limited re-issue of our BAe EAP kit under our Silver Cloud label. This is a 1/72nd scale multi-media kit, featuring grey and clear resin, photo-etched brass and screen printed decals by Fantasy Printshop.
We are hoping to have this kit back on sale by the middle of March, in time for IPMS Southern Expo at Hornchurch, Essex. Price to be confirmed.

Also expected for release in March will be our 1/72nd scale Dassault Etendard IVP and Douglas A-4C/L conversion sets, designed for use with the Heller IVM and Airfix A-4B base kits.

Freightdog 1/144 Boeing C-97 AWI (AEW) conversion

Resin cast conversion set (five parts) to 1/144th scale. Designed for use with any of the Minicraft family of C-97 or KC-97 kits. The C-97 AWI was a 1945 British proposal for an Airborne Warning and Interception platform utilising its large forward fuselage to locate a 7 foot antenna in the nose. To do this the cockpit was to be relocated on the top of the fuselage, with smaller antennae located above and below the fuselage. A paper project only, more information can be found on this facinating subject in The Air Staff and AEW by Chris Gibson, published by Blue Envoy Press. Decals not included, illustration by Adrian Mann.

You know, everything looks better in RCAF markings.  I guess this is the exception that proves the rule.  If you really want to whif, how about you remove the dorsal radome, and scribe some lines to represent doors on the front one.  Put it in the livery of one of the cross-channel ferries.

I think that particular model of the RCAF C-97 is one of the Venerable Mike McEvoy's builds, he's done FOUR of them already!

Just finished assembling this for Telford, so time to share. My next new release, the EE Lightning Ground Attack proposal. Based on original source documents at Kew, the GA variant was a proposal to convert surplus F.1, 1A and 2 Lightning to a ground attack capable airframe, retaining its air defence capability. The proposal outlined bringing the airframe to equivalent F.6 standard, and fitting a multi-role weapon pack in the belly. The weapon features stub wings and allowed the carriage of N1 bombs (included), Bullpup, AS30, Napalm tanks or Zuni Rockets, retaining the Fire Streak missiles as all guns were removed;



Price still TBC, set includes belly, stub wings, pylons and N1 bombs for starters. Designed for use with the Airfix F.2A or F.6 Lightning base kit.

Price of the Lightning FGA kit has been confirmed at £11.

Couple of thoughts I've had about this:

1. If you've got a Revell Hunter FGA.9 with the intention of using Freightdog's P.1109 and/or P.1083 conversion kits on it, then you'll probably have two Mavericks and a set of Swiss markings going spare. You could put them on the Lightning FGA and claim that the Swiss bought it as an interceptor but then extended it's life forever (in typical Swiss fashion and similar to the Hunter) with repeated upgrades.

2. If you've got an Airfix Canberra B(I).8 with the intention of using Freightdog's P.12 all-weather fighter conversion on it, then you're going to have a pair of AS.30 AGMs spare, which would go very nicely on the FGA Lightning. The picture on the front of the original brochure shows dummy Bullpups on the aircraft, but all the test inside refers to AS.30s.

The brochure proposal actually did away with all the guns in order to make space for more electronics, which as far as I could see consisted of a doppler nav system, air-to-ground modes for the AI.23 radar and AS.30 guidance electronics. Bear in mind that this was all in the context of a low-cost retro-fit to the existing 1950s electronics, so extra black box space was needed, and fuel was considered the priority for the belly tank. Interestingly, they seem to have gone out of their way to not use the overwing pylons. The mod also retained the ability to use the existing Firestreak set up, though not at the same time as the bombs, thus preserving the fighter capability.

There was a later proposal called PL.1 (details in Chis Gibson's Battle Flight book), which mostly used a T.5 airframe, that had a longer belly tank which extended over the original missile pack location and had a new detachable pack further back. I think you could model this using two of the Freightdog sets and cutting them up. Options for this pack included:

All fuel
Recce cameras
2 x Red Top
2 x Sidewinder plus some fuel
4 x Sidewinder plus some fuel
2 x retractable 51mm RP launchers
2 x 51mm rockets pods plus some fuel
2 x Bullpup plus some fuel
1 x Semi-recessed Genie
3 x Semi-recessed N1 1000lb bombs

I love Lightnings and this looks like a must have!  Would go well with a four cannon nose....

That would work as more of a CAS type aircraft than a strike job since it wouldn't have room for the nav kit. You could combine it with the retractable 51mm rockets launchers that were an option for the missile support pack area.

Damned shame that Colin has not bothered to offer some of his TSR.2 items in 1:48th scale

The vast majority of TSR.2s you see at UK model shows are the 1/72nd ones, plus that's the only one available new (Stratos 4 boxing), so I imagine that's why he's concentrated on that scale. As far as I know, all his masters are done the traditional way by hand, so doing them in a different scale basically amounts to making them twice: it's not just a matter of re-scaling a CAD file.
