With the impending release of the T54E1 kit by Dragon what does everyone see as upgrades if it had gone into production? Maybe not used by the U.S. but sold to allies possibly. Interested in what others think it might have become. Here is what I am thinking for a late 1960's early 1970's upgrade package by those wizards of tank whiffing the Israelis.
- Swap out the 105mm T140E2 cannon for either an L7 105mm or a Bofors made 62 caliber version as used on the Swedish S-tank for ammunition commonality. Need to do a performance comparison.
- Go to a diesel power pack from the M60/Centurion for commonality.

Seriously?! I just started work on the hull of the ancient Revellogram M48. I was going to kitbash/scratch build the turret. I only recently got back into building tanks and this may be more parts and $ than I'm ready for... Oh well, at least it will save me the embarrassment of my shoddy workmanship.
As for mods, maybe a production version would have a commanders cupola/turret like the M48 and M60. Israel is a definite possibility for a what if customer.

I would just look to the Israeli M48s and M60s for inspiration. Therefore, you could swap in a L7 or similar, though one doesn't necessarily need to swap out the existing gun (maybe just give it a thermal sleeve etc), add on the ubiquitous ERA, maybe some extra MGs, a dozer blade...

If one wanted something other than Israeli, again just look at any of the other M60 real world operators as inspiration:

Hey Carlos, that short M47 is really cool and it's close to an idea I've been playing with for a while now. Still inspired by the T42 but mixed with some elements of the T20 family as well.

For your consideration, what about trying the "Short 47" with a T23 76mm gun turret and an early cast Leopard 1 turret as well?

I know that Germany did this combination only to test the turret, but is there anything that keeps this set up from being combat-ready and cannot be overcome?

(Of course whether this can adequately function as a tank under combat condition of its time or would just be a glorified turreted tank destroyer is another story.)

(I hope I didn't ask that question before......)

Not t an expert here but I'm thinking that so long as the turret ring fits and the turret has power and the vehicle can handle the weight of it all it should be usable. Now whether the main gub recoil can be absorbed...

Subtle Whiff idea: The Singaporean Army used AMX-13s from 1969 to around 2006.

During this time they also used the M728 CEV which was based upon the M-60 tank:

What if they went further and thus used M-60 tanks instead of AMX-13s?

I would rather see the AMX-13 turret armed with a 90mm or 105mm gun mated to an M41 Walker Bulldog hull. That would help keep it useful in urban and open terrain.

The Singaporean military around this time was heavily influenced by the IDF. In fact, its AMX-13s were ex-IDF, recommended by IDF officers acting as advisors to Singapore, in part because the Singaporean infrastructure around this time (bridges, etc.) had a hard time handling the weight of modern MBTs.

Other than that, there's no technical reason the Singaporean Army couldn't have operated M60s. I'd have expected them to eventually be upgraded to a similar level as those operated by the IDF Magach 6 & 7s. I always thought the Magach 7A had a very business-like appearance.

I was reading recently about difficulties with Chieftain reliability and then separately was reminded of the FV4201/T95 studies, and I realized that if the T95/FV4201 combination was technically possible, then so too would a Chieftain turret on an M60 hull. I realized that I hadn't actually seen one of those mocked up before, so I decided to take some of the profiles from Tank Encyclopedia and try my hand at it. I did my best to scale these accurately, so I hope you all find them interesting, at least.
