It is time to get this show on the road! So after a close look at my stash and making a few pro/con decisions, I took out the SR-71 box and dug out a kit.

Not going to give anything away on this. No more hints, or help-- This is a Black Project after all!! I will talk about techniques, bit for the most part I will let the pictures do the talking for how this will end.

Yep, no doubt about it. I missed the D-21 launch pylon and the transport dolly parts that are still attached to the sprues. I missed those the first time I looked at that image.

I didnt know what those were!

I finally had to resort to looking at the instructions

Scale-o-rama

Intrument panels have wonderful detail that responded easily to a wash.

Glued them in and reinforced them with sprue

Super glued the halves together. This got a little dicey as the super glue began running Just about everywhere including onto my shorts!!

But I managed to clamp everything together well enough and avoid serious issues in the future (or so I hope)

The next step is to fill and sand the hell out of it to make it smooth, after that I have to fit the new Tail fins.

O golly, I haven't built one of those since the Revell kit came out in the '60s. Still a wonderful design,
and I expect we'll see some magic with this interpretation.

I didnt know what those were! I finally had to resort to looking at the instructions

Never understood why Monogram (now Revell) included the D-21 with their SR-71 since the original M-21/D-21 was based on the A-12 airframe. I suspect they were going for the "wow" factor which seemed to work for me as I picked up a couple of those kits for the D-21 and discarded the rest of the SR-71 kit to someone else.

Trickle down economics? I guess it was in a way :)

Thanks BDB! As much as it pains me to do I am trying to keep a lot of this a surprise! Want the final result to be eye watering good for us whiffers and eye wateringly bad for JMNs!

Half hour of sanding

1/48 Tomcat canopy mangled to fit

Kind of hard to tell in this pic, but the sharp edges of the SR-71s rear were rounded off. After I took this photo I rounded them even more. $:-\$

Watching with great interest.
Believe model with most duplicates in stash is SR-71 in three scales (1/72, 1/110, 1/144) at least a dozen for sure.

I have some other ideas for that too! this is the first time I have tried it, and its worked very well so far. Hope to try it again on another project that is still probably in the distant future

The new Tailfins cut from 1/48 Tomcat Horizontal Stabs. The metal rods are for reinforcing the new joint after drilling hole in both the fins and fuselage.

the nose with styrene strip to hold all the lead shot in. Its bad to use super glue on the shot, so I just decided to seal it in there, and not worry. But as you can see I had to trim it to fit again! easy fix.

So maybe just a few more pictures and then this project is "going dark" I don't want to reveal anything until the weathering stage.

Stay tuned! I hope to have it done by Sunday night.

I confess those engines spikes were never glued in

^ Anything looks cool and Japanese with the addition of a Dinah windscreen

Would have preferred to have contra-rotating props but those are expensive and thus rare in the TT stash. I do hope to do one with contraprops in the future though

1/48 Dinah props, 1/72 B-50 engines with intakes removed.

Sadly but not surprisingly I am running late but that might not be a bad thing. I am going to post what I have so far (interesting concept for a GB, I know) And get some opinions. These opinions are very important to me, so please comment.

Pic from Kyo-Jin Lee on ARC. But he put it on just to see since he had a Corsair handy. I think he built a regular SR-71 but I don't know because the build thread stops.

The love of my life, the Future Mrs TaiidanTomcat likes the SR-71 and absolutely loathes what I am doing here, since I first told her about it. She is no JMN but she is a huge SR-71 fan and thinks my model "destroys the point" of the Blackbird . To the extent that even I am wondering if i should do something different. $:-\$

So thoughts, questions, comments, criticisms, voodoo curses, etc, all welcome. :)

A shame you don't have a quartet of J7W Shindens, a C-130J, or an AirBus A400M to steal the propellers from. It would look so much better with unducted fan type propellers :)

Somehow I think he's getting a laugh out of this though.

Little do we know that Tomcat' doesn't have the four radial engines glued down either and he's going to complete the model as a nautical theme with twin paddlewheels on each side....

I agree! Hoping the next version will incorporate them though. Might also make it more of an interceptor/fighter version as well. Counter rotating would also be good.

Thank you, and they are taped and not glued. The backup if the props just "don't seem right" is to Jam a 1/48 F-14 engine face into the nacelles and call them "Super Jumo copies," Add canards up front and make it a jet fighter.

I really think it captures that Wolfenstein/Indiana Jones/Deisel punk look... still not 100 percent though. The temptation of doing with some killer looking props like Uncle Jeffry suggested is really tempting but with a move coming up I don't want to order more models to pack (I have plenty to haul as it is...)

Its an ingenious development. I'd be inclined to argue for open cockpits, and a long, long, long trough with a half dozen or so

Painted "Lagoon" I then decanted the paint into a jar, sprayed in some gray primer as well and masked and airbrushed it twice. Believe it or not it the first time I have done "panel shading" I am experimenting and going for a look like this model by Steve Hustad:

Impressive. That weathering by abrasion look really is something. We get automobiles here in suburban Arizona that look like that Yokosuka P1Y1
after some years of our haboobs and dust devils. That is realistic looking. There is a P2V ex air tanker also very sandblasted looking, to a "Lady be Good" level down in Tucson.

Canopy went wrong, fogged on my fingerprints and the canopy developed cracks from clamping it down. Bit heavy handed on this I'm afraid

Its twin rapid fire 90mm guns able to deal with the Superfortress and later the Petlyakov 8 squadrons.

Capable of transonic performance in the dive.

Flown by JASDF crews in Korea as a base defense craft.
