The Tech Manual
« on: December 29, 2022, 02:20:01 AM »
Hi folks,

Here are the Rules of the "Automatons on Parade" Uninhabited/autonomous vehicles Group Build:

  • Have Fun!!!
  • As the name implies, the idea is to represent things that are computer controlled as opposed to human controlled.  This includes UAVs, UGVs, USVs, robots, self drive cars, optionally piloted vehicles, armed or unarmed etc - you get the point.  If need be ask me.  Both real world or whiff are welcomed and encouraged. Any medium - so physical models, Pixels/profiles and stories (and anything else if you can think of it) are all welcome.
  • Creativity encouraged as is collaboration
  • Duration is 1 Jan 2023 to 31 Mar 2023.  An extension may be granted, but only a short one and only if the Moderator (me) feels like it.  (Bribes welcomed on this front.)
  • Physical creations and pixels/stories will be judged separately
  • Any questions are to be directed to the Moderator (me again!)
  • See rule 1

Regards,

Greg

Were things like the F6F drones computerized enough to qualify?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Palmdale

IIRC, there were earlier contraptions that could be controlled in the air, and even landed (rope or cable hanging beneath to detect proximity to ground? ).
Remote control Nazi tanks?
V-1?

I guess we can go back to 1913 when the first auto-drone was considered then built & tested in 1916 ... or even earlier ? ;)

Hi,
Can I sign up to do a Kettering Bug?  It looks like there is both a paper model and a small scale 3D model available of it.  I'm hoping to maybe use either the existing paper or 3D model as a starting point for a larger scale build (maybe 1/24th, 1/32, or even 1/35 scale).

Does the moderator think this might be too far along? Finally assembly is required although I don't have a special really huge building for it like NASA does. Pretty much everything needs painting and I'll print new decals for it.
This is a partially built “Shuttle C” vehicle I started far too many years ago to think about. It would go with my finish things before starting new stuff plan.
I have a bunch of other rockety things I could bash together for some whiff launch vehicles.

The pile o' parts.

About what it should look like. Shuttle C was a proposal to reuse timed out Shuttle main engines and recovered SRBs to launch non-crewed cargo vehicles to the ISS and launch satellites and such things that did not need a crew. Without the weight of shuttle wings, tail and crew compartment much more mass could be launched compared to regular STS launches. This way components that were no longer rated for crewed flight could be used one more time and not sit in a warehouse forever.
