Hawker Siddeley (Kingston) P.1202-9 ”Hobby”
« on: October 30, 2022, 07:47:56 PM »
The P.1202-9 were a studie put forward by Hawker Siddeley (Kingston) in 1977/78 as an answer to the requirements in AST.403 for a successor to the Harriers and Jaguars of RAF. A long line of proposals from various aircraft producers led in the end to the building of the EAP and the Eurofighter Typhoon, which entered service in RAF in 2006 - 29 years after AST.403 was originaly submitted.

But what if RAF had overruled the mandarins of Whitehall and ordered the P.1202-9 into production?

The Hawker Siddeley P.1202-9 ”Hobby” entered squadron service in the autum of 1984. The plane were named af the Hobby (Falco subbuteo) which is a very swift falcon nesting in Southern England. Then some argentine generals and admirals made the mistake of their lives in 1982. After the recapture of The Falkland Islands, Britain needed a strong air defence  on the islands to ensure, that there would be no repetition. So in the winter 1984-85 a flight of Hobby's arrived  af RAF Mount Pleasant.

The model in scale 1/72 will be based on an old f-16 kit from Idea in the ”wrong scale” of  1/48 and the sadly remains of a PM Models F-16, which did lose its wings to a Douglas XF-3A conversion.

And here are the pieces, which would eventually by hard work, a lot of PSR and mayby some witchcraft be turned into the P.1202-9

The first cut is the deepest. The 1/48 fuselage is too wide and to high. So it has to be trimmed.

And by the way: The intake is not at the right place and don't have the right size. And the fuselage i too long. So, more cut, cut, cut .......

The 1/48 fuselage cut and glued to the approximate dimensions. Ahead lies some more fumbling with card, glue and hours of PSR.

Whoa!  :icon_surprised: That's a first! I've NEVER seen an F-16 kit's fuselage split that way.  :icon_surprised:

Interesting project!

With the help of some plasticard and a lot of sanding is the 1/48 fuselage transformed into the aftfuselage of the 1/72 P.1202-9

Now the its time for adding the 1/72 F-16 front fuselage to the 1/48 F-16 aft fuselage. Looks like it's possible to make it fit.

The 1/72 front fuselage is now attached to the 1/48 rear fuselage. And the first phase of the PSR have been started.

And now for something completely different: The wings.

The wingspan of the 1/48 F-16 is precisely the same as the 1/72 P.1202-9. And the angle of the leading edge is the same too. But the trailing edge has to be modified.

The inlet need to be reshaped. So more cutting and rearranging of the pieces, and a well for the nosewheel is added.

The RB 431-14R engine need an exhaust. With some PSR the 1/48 F-16 exhaust might work out.

The wings have now been added and I'm getting closer to the paint phase. Originally I would had placed the P.1020-9 on The Falklands in the late 1980's/ early 1990's and envisaged it painted in the two colour grey camo as seen on EE lightnings. But lately weird and disturbing pictures have sneaked into my dreams, and I have started to imagine export orders from Canada (dark green/dark grey top/light grey bottom) og Australia (multi coloured SEA scheme) - And what about the Kiwis?

Temptations aside, that Lightning scheme of Medium Sea Grey and Barley Grey would really suit your P.1020-9!

I too felt, that the grey Lightning scheme would really suit the P.1020-9 But I opted for the darker version of Dark Sea Grey top and Medium Sea Grey bottom, as I thought that there would be too little contrast between the greys and the pink/light blue Roundels.

I did use some low-vis Roundels larger than the ones used on the Lightnings, Tornados, Jaguars etc., as I felt. that the low-vis Roundels became almost un-vis on such a large Plane.

Yes. That would be awesome - but then the P.1202-9 would not be In the Service of Her Majesty. Unless we rewrite history, so the British Mandate turns into a british Colony! And stays that way until at least after 6 february 1952  ;) Maybe an Idea for an other build !!!
