Yak-38 Forger Ideas and Inspiration
« on: March 10, 2012, 04:26:35 AM »
Hi folks,

With HobbyBoss now producing both the Yak-38/38M and Yak-38U kits in 1/48 (I have one of each already 8)), how about a thread dedicated to your Yak-38 Forger Ideas and Inspiration?

I am tempted to one of these in either Chinese or Cuban markings.

Regards,

Greg

That looks like something that would scale-o-rama nicely into a large bomber or transport.  The cockpit would also suit something sci-fi quite nicely.

Cheers,

In addition to the obligatory Merivoimat in hi-viz & lo-viz, I also did a Yak-38 in overall grey as a Soviet Aggressor aircraft (mimicking an RN Shar).

Combine portions of the Yak-38 and Yak-38U as a basis of the Yak-39 with a radar nose, a more "fighter" wing, and the aft fuselage of the Yak-38U to balance the third lift engine.  I can see several possibilities from Frontal Aviation units to true fighters on-board their aircraft-carrying cruisers as well as various allied states.

How about a CTOL Yak-38? A little sectioning and some Jaguar bits from the spares box?

I thinked about exacly this, when I started thread abput whif soviet carier aviation: it would be a "scooter-style" small strike plane, that USSR didn't have during Cold War, oposite to west (G-91, A-4, A-7, Jaguar)

Great minds  ;)  I was actually thinking of a direct Jaguar analogue but why not a carrier version too!

I'm not sure how light it would be, more like at least a medium attack aircraft, potentially equal to teh A-7 since the Yak-38 engine is a derivative of the MiG-23's engine.  Still, there's definite potential for variation there and, really, for a ctol aircraft you'd need a rather larger wing.

Cuban markings would be good for the April Fool's Day comp !!

Does the kit nose really have that much droop shown in the box-art ?  Cool if it does !

If it's an accurate representation of the twin-stick Forger, there should be a significant 'droop' to the nose.

^ Well, they did get the longer, dropped nose right. However, they used the same rear fuselage, while the original Yak-38U had a lengthened rear fuselage. Interestingly enough, the drawings out there (which Hobby Boss apparently used) show no lengthened rear fuselage, but in the pics it's definitely there (LINK).
Personally, I think it actually looks better with the "wrong" rear fuselage.  >:D

totally agree .... kit ordered !  two profiles underway.

Cam suggestions ??  I've seen Luftwaffe Phantoms in light-grey&brown and green/dk.grey.

What if the Brits did another 'Nene' and sold the Soviet Union some RR Pegasus engines which are then fitted to Yak-38Cs instead of the lift + cruise arrangement.  Alternatively, maybe espionage or similar route to the same.  Either way, a Forger with four poster Pegasus arrangement.

The Soviets manage to capture an RAF Harrier T.4 that stranded on Czechoslovak soil after engine troubles. Apparently, some high-ranking KGB official wanted to defect and was to be picked up directly in the CSSR after the original plan to smuggle him through gas pipelines turned out to be unworkable.   ;) :icon_ninja:

Just because!

I don't know... maybe India bought a Kiev-class aircraft carrier complete with aircraft and put some money into upgrades? Same storyline, but with China instead of India?
