Hi all,
This kit was generously sent to me by Old Wombat so it seemed inevitable it would end up with some form of Aussie connection! Although the kit that has received some paint by my hand no cement has touched it and all the parts that were on the sprues when received are still on there, our great and benevolent Admin has kindly allowed its entry to the GB.

Thus begins the journey of...

Thank you both! I'll remove/ruin all speculation by saying RAAF Foliage Green!

I figured it would probably be either the Foliage Green, or the Foliage Green & Dark Earth, with White bits, given that it is the 100th Anniversary of the RAAF GB. ;)

She seems to be travelling nicely, Zac.

I hope she's behaving & not giving you too much trouble. ???

She's going together like a dream! The I left out part #19 (a little trench-looking bit) as I had no idea where it actually went or what it did, and how to fit #23 (the turnover truss structure). She's already received two coats of paint so I'm optimistic I'll have her finished this weekend!

Part 19 is the where the barrel of the MG stows when the gun isn't in use.

That's exactly what I thought it was, except in the instructions they point to a lower fuselage tab/socket rather than the actual position!

Yesterday was painting day for the Devastator and I used Tamiya XF-61 as a stand-in for Foliage Green:

It was too windy and rainy for me to have a window open for ventilation this morning so the gloss coat had to wait until 3pm when I was satisfied The Bench wouldn't get drenched!

The kit instructions have been folded over the model as a sort of open-ended hangar to hopefully avoid dust and cat hair, my normal technique if a suitably-sized box isn't available to prop over it. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon I can do the decals.

I may have to enter another kit given how quickly this has gone together!

I keep meaning to pick up that kit, and every time I go to a show or a store I forget to look for one.

Me too ... the Foliage Green was a good call. Does your Devastator appear darker 'in person'? Swatches of XF-61 Dark Green look like a good match.

Thanks for your kind words, folks!
No white bits! :(
Me and white have a very difficult relationship when it comes to models. Plus it didn't occur to me until I was adding the decals! But the all-green Beaufighters and Boomerangs look quite good to me so I'm happy with my decision.

I recently used XF-61 on an RNZAF P-40 that was Foliage Green and the Humbrol Gloss darkened it a bit more than I'd like, and the same has happened with the Devastator. You'll see this in the final photos, hopefully tomorrow.

No issues with the Humbrol Gloss Cote overnight so I have just put the decals in place. I'll let the MicroSet (rivets! corrugated wings!!) do its thing and I may decide to Matt it later today rather than tomorrow...

So let's lift the literal lid and see how it went...
Airfix 1/72 DAP Devastator Mk.Ib by Zac Yates, on Flickr

Unfortunately the Devastator is now on hold. Not because of an issue with the Matt Cote, nor cat-related misadventure, but because Tamiya XF-61 changes colour when I get below 1/4 of a bottle remaining. In this photo you can see the difference in tone between fuselage, cowling and aerial mast, and canopy frame as the paint undergoes this bizarre metamorphosis:

So she's on hold until I can get some more paint, which may be a while as we're behind on some bills.

You have to really mix Tamiya paints every time you use them, when brush painting, to distribute the pigments evenly or you get this issue.

Not as much of a problem when using an airbrush, as you're thinning the paint anyway.

Actually, even when brush painting with Tamiya paints, it's a good idea to thin them a bit (say about 25-33%).

Thanks Guy, I mix my paints thoroughly every time I use them and XF-61 consistently has this problem for me. I've never thinned them apart from a few drops of water if it's thickened up, that's a whole new adventure I'm yet to embark on.

It's just too much of a difference for me to live with so for the time being she sits thusly:
