I'm probably not the only one thinking that bird is such a natural for racing.

As a racer, perhaps delete the tip tanks, clip the wings a tad and add wingtip end fences (like modern winglets, but simple vertical plates.) to provide drag and handling benefits?

He's doing it as a cross-country racer, like the Bendix Trophy, which ran from 1931 to 1962..
