Title: STRV-103 Recce
Post by: tankmodeler on June 29, 2015, 12:58:22 AM
Right, my next What If.

What if the Swedes decided to use the old STRV-103 "S-Tank" as a recce vehicle after coming out of service?

So this is the Trumpeter STRV-103B stretched a little more than a foot, with the main gun and systems removed, a small dismount/ recce operator station added in it's place and the new Live Resin Remote Weapon Station added for self defence. The S-Tank comb o of a gas turbine and a diesel has been replaced with a larger, more powerful and modern diesel to improve fuel economy while not losing too much in the terms of HP.

As you can see I've got the hull mostly sorted and the RWS built. I still need to install the suspension, the crew door and then scratchbuild the raise-able electronic recce pod right behind the driver and commander.

Will post more as the work progresses...

With the RWS loosely installed.

Off to a good start.

Instead of saying it was after they were in service, why not have this variant in service alongside the standard vehicle?

Really good idea. What are you going to use for tracks now that the tank is longer?

Nice !!!   Love the concept and the scratch building.

I was thinking the kit tracks but adding side skirts to hide the shortage.  :)

I've often thought about fitting TOW missile and perhaps the RWS to this vehicle. Would have made a good tank hunter or recon vehicle as you are doing. I'll be watching this one. 8)

Looking good!

My own ideas run similar to yours but you have gone much further with the access door in the rear and the much larger RWS on the roof.  Impressive!

Yes a RWS would look good even on the original gun tank.  I had actually thought of a Cadillac T50 Turret on an S-Tank previously although a RWS is a logical update.

Very nice. Great idea and great scratch-building. Can't wait to see this one develop.  :)

Naw, been working on the house plus trying to get the new CAMS A4E12 amphibious light tank painted. There probably won't be too much done until the fall as I'm busy as heck with non-modelling stuff for the rest of the summer.

Super scratch work, integrated in, sure it will look seamless when done.
Like concept and turret :)

Another "why not" project.
great use for an "older" chassis to get max value out of the design.

it would have everything a Recce vehicle would need, low silhouette and speed.

Wellll, the hull really isn't set up for a wheeled suspension. Plus, I really like tracked vehicles. Much more than wheeled ones.  ;D

Just a bump up to say I've got most of the build done and am starting to paint the suspension and parts that will be hidden by the skirts. As it happens the skirts I will be using are the ones that I am _not_ using for my IDF Panther WHIF. I shortened them by a panel and they will do the trick very nicely.

Gotta take more photos tonight and will post them.

As requested.... Photos!

Still lots of work to do. Details to add then start the weathering under the skirts, add the wheels, weather, add the skirts and then complete the paint.

Thinking I'm going to keep it in NATO green and use Canadian markings.

Will this include the jerry can armor down the sides?

Will your STRV-103 R-Tank be using the original power train (gas turbine and diesel)?
Or have you opted for a single power source/engine type?

Hope you keep the fuel can storage on the hull/track area and that bulldozer blade under the front.

I won't be using the diesel armour. The lengthened hull makes the kit parts no longer fit and I also envisage that this is much more a hide and scoot vehicle and unlikely to mix it up with the big boys. I'll be using shortened skirts from the parallel IDF Panther build.

The engine is nominally a new powerpack based on a modern high performance diesel. I've re-jigged the glacis to indicate this new powerpack. I figure nowadays a nice efficient 750 horse diesel will fit into that space and greatly simplify maintenance and lower fuel burn for much longer range.

What did you use for your EO turret?  It sort of looks like a 1:35th scale naval gun turret of some kind.

It appears I glossed over your engine/power plant plans in the original post that started this topic.

Serves me right for missing that detail.

It's actually an old 1/72 TBF Avenger turret modified. It's not quite finished yet.

No probs, that was months ago.

Fantastic work on that 103! It is one of my favorite modern AFVs.

I specialy like the rear.

You gave my some ideas for my very old 1/48 Academy kit  ;)

So, I've gotten some work done on my STRV 103 Recce over Christmas. She's a little monochromatic at the moment, but some weathering will bring it to life.

Well, it's going slowly. Work has been a b!tch and I'm packing and renovating to sell and move. That said I'm doing some detail painting and starting the weathering. So progressing, but slowly. oh so slowly. :)
