Title: "Clear Your Workbench" GB?
Post by: GTX_Admin on September 15, 2013, 04:35:47 PM
Folks,

With the end of the year in sight again, I thought it was time to propose a revisit of the "Clear Your Workbench" Group Build.  This is a GB for you to finish already started builds, including from earlier GBs.  Proposed duration would be 4 Nov - 31 Dec.

Please let me know (by voting) if you want this GB to run.  The vote will run for 2 weeks and you can change your mind if need be.  Please feel free to put forward your arguments both for and against.

Regards,

Greg

Sorry folks, very minor update:  to prevent overlap with The Free Jocks GB, this GB would start 4th Nov.

Is this model building only? or would the delayed drawings be welcome too? ???

As always, the GB would include physical models, drawings/profiles/artwork, stories and whatever other sorts of creations you can think up.

Personally, I have a couple of story ideas that should be finished...along with dozens of model kits :(.

Have two unfinished floaty type builds.  Flying boat and gun boat.
Fond of both them, but wanna finish at least one and move on to a B-10 kitbash.

I have a monster project planned for the winter months and technically, I have already started it in so much as I have put some drawings together to scope the art of the possible.  It's going to involve kit bashing and a fair amount of scratch build so no guarantees that it will be complete by the end of December but this GB might just give me the incentive to keep things moving along. You have my vote good sir.  :)

Well there is always December 2014 or 2015, I am personally aiming to finish something before December 2025

My profiles are averaging about 4 years from conception to completion, so that seems about right.

Thanks gents.
I am afraid I am spending far too much time playing with floaty things and things that go bang to spend much time on my hobby at the moment.  The Clear your work bench GB is my shining hope.

I could handle it, I have a work cycle coming to a close on the 2nd of November already so it works out that way. I would be unavailable for Thanksgiving weekend, and Christmastime though, I'm going back home for a week, and my brother is coming back with me and moving in. Shouldn't be a problem as this is about the easiest GB to moderate:

"is it started?"

If not start something before November 2. Is it started already? Welcome to the GB!!  ;D

Would it be possible to run this GB a bit longer than usual, say 3 months - Oct 1st - Dec 31st.  One of the reasons I haven't been joining GB's lately is they're too short in duration, my build speed is governed by my day job load ---

I agree with this in general.  Were it not for the obligatory extensions, I'd have a hard time with some of them.

I wouldn't mind having more time to finish of course  :)

However, I have one condition: With this GB being green lit so quickly before kick off on October 1st. I would ask everyone to help promote this GB to all the writers, profilers, and builders on the forum-- especially as they only have couple days to "start the model before the first day" if they want to participate in the GB and don't have already anything that needs finishing. (BTW if you know anyone here who actually finishes everything they start, or has nothing but finished projects, please report them to your local authorities so they can be questioned and receive help  ;D )

So get out there and PM some friends, and invite some friends over to the forum from elsewhere too, if someone teased you by starting something awesome and then never finished it, get a hold of them tell them you want to see that awesome something finished in this GB.

Lets get as many models, stories, and art finished this year as we can  :)

I'm game dude!  I actually just finished cleaning off my bench and giving it a good dusting.  Crap finds its way into every little corner...  My God how refreshing it is to just clean it all off and start something new.

Greg if you don't mind I'm going to finally get your Comet equipped Zerstroyers done.  I've been starting and stopping that build so darn many times its driving me insane.  I finalized the design recently so its time to start seriously whacking up plastic besides just doing the prep work and sanding off the parts I don't need.

Maybe I'll finish up a profile or two as well since I have several still in the line drawing stage.

Time to clear the benches people!!  You'll be amazed at how good it feels!!!!  8)

Know what you mean about bench cleaning.
Mine is in total disarray.  Needs major clean up.
Have PBH-417 and Arizona based gun boat to finish.

I have a scary list of unfinished projects, and I won't be able to take advantage of the early start because modelling is grinding to a halt now due to committments to Other Things.

On the list of easyish completes:

M113s project. This is probably the favorite for getting done.

Helivan: a helicopterized Skyvan that I started for a Group Build and then dropped (literally) just before the deadline, making it impossible to finish on time. It's perfectly repairable though, and I'd like to see it done.

Yak-40-something: a Sovietized Mystere IV that fell victim to a paint malfunction. Again recoverable, and with a backstory I'm itching to see out in the world...

Avro Atom: one of the first whiffs I ever started and always the bridesmaid as it's been put aside for just about every GB since. Easy enough to finish, but the original photography/supporting material plan was pretty ambitious and might not see the light of day.

Corsair Hunter X4: an alien law-enforcement space fighter that I started for the sci-fi themed build on What If and then got bogged down in a kind of "builder's block" over the strict rules I'd set for myself. Mostly resolved now, so it could go ahead again. There's also a complimentary Vebian Buccaneer ship to with it, but that's just a pile of unsuspecting bits at the moment...

Ok did a little reaserach last nite and made a choice.

The PZIV is probably too far off. It was an early mock up and used parts from Tamiya kits I'd built when I was 15. I'd like to do it properly with new kits for better detail. The 254 I could do in addition but .......

I've decided to finish the SE5A. It's been bugging me for a couple of years now as I couldn't decide on a suitably amusing scheme and so it just sat there.  I wanted to do it as Lord Flashhearts plane from Blackadder Goes Forth but I couldn't settle on a typical Flashheart colour, found something last night tho so it's all go. I'll be glad to get it done and off my list.

Tanks?

Yeah my problem though is over-promising and then delivering nothing  :-X :D

Having just read Logan's comment on how his Midway Viking had been in the making for over four years, how about a special "ranking" at the end of the GB, commemorating the whif finished for the GB that's taken the longest to complete?  :P

The 80s?

I once finished off an RCAF Starfighter that I'd started in 1972 and just managed it in time for the IPMS-UK Nationals in 1998!  :D

During the 80s I used to complete and average of one kit a fortnight, the limitation being I could only afford to by one a fortnight.  It was the expensive birthday, or birthday money ones that didn't get finished as I wanted them to be perfect, hence procrastination......

I almost stopped modelling, 1981-1999, because of this "perfect" status required by magazines. I started again to build and finish when my standards were lowered down, in a satisfaction/effort ratio improvement...

Besides the two Vought Vikings and one Heinkel He 46G that I've already submitted, I have the following profiles that are largely unfinished that should be eligible for this GB and I might (with luck) finish.  I've included their estimated "in progress" time in parentheses.

1x Martin B-51 Panther (4 years, 4 months)
1x Vought Viking (3 years, 8 months)
1x Heinkel He 46G (1 year, 9 months)
1x Martin B-51 Panther (1 year, 5 months)
1x Northrop P-61F Widow (5 months)

My expected order of completion is He 46G, B-51, Viking, and P-61F.  The first three are just going to require paint schemes.  The last two are going to need lighting/shading (structural) work.  Of the 5 remaining profiles to complete 1 of them is all on me, two of them are collaborations with Talos where he's already gotten me everything on my and it will just be up to me to complete, and the last two are going to be dependent on Talos wrapping up some pieces so we can get those finished.

So, if everything goes to plan, I'll have 8 total submissions to this GB.  Then again, if everything went according to plan, I wouldn't have had 8 unfinished profiles sitting around on my hard drive!!!

Those are significant "in progress" times.  Do you have figures for "in stagnation" times?
PBH-417 build had a lot of the later.  ;)

Those are significant "in progress" times.  Do you have figures for "in stagnation" times?

Sure.  Take the "in progress" and subtract a week (at most).  That's when they get left or forgotten and not touched again until conditions allow me to revisit them or I just plain remember that they're there.

To be fair, I really should explain some more.  How long does a profile of mine take to do?  Well, it depends, but I'll say that doing the lighting, shading, etc. (all the prep work) takes many, many, many hours.  Ask Talos.  The XB-51, He 100, and V-507 took dozens of man hours of work, no exaggeration.  And that's without a drop of "paint" on them.  I shudder to think how many the P-61F took.  It may well have been hundreds.  The profiles themselves only take a few hours of actual Photoshop work, though many days of research may have gone into them.

That's why I sometimes get irritated when I ask if anyone has a request for a new scheme (which may take 6+ hours of work) and I instead get a request for a new aircraft type (which may take 6+ months of work).  I had to explain all this to my father this weekend when he flippantly suggested I do a Dornier Do 24 profile.  Besides the fact that many fantastic Do 24 profiles already exist (so my profiles would add nothing to the aircraft art world), the time required to do this would take up MONTHS of my life.  No thank you.  That's why Talos and I are so choosy with our projects.

That's also why I have only done 10 different aircraft types in the 5 years I've been profiling.  And of those, I did 4 in the first year.  At the level of detail that Talos and I put into our joint projects, we're averaging 1.5 new aircraft types a year.  Even airframe modifications are an absolute bear to do.

That should explain why I'm rather open to suggestions of "slap a new coat of paint on it", I'm rather dismissive towards suggestions of "put a different engine on it", and I'm outright hostile towards suggestions of "you should do a different aircraft altogether!"

Cheers,

Logan

Thanks for explanation.  Having done NO and watched NO profiling such as you do, I don't know how involved it is.
Myself and likely others are under appreciative of how much effort has gone into the many profiles posted at BTS.
Title: Re: "Clear Your Workbench" GB?
Post by: Logan Hartke on November 13, 2013, 03:54:05 PM
No problem, finsrin.  I'm chuffed that you were interested enough to ask.  Profilers and modelers are two different sides of the same coin.  We just work in different mediums.  I grew up watching my dad build models and made just enough ham-fisted attempts of my own to realize that it wasn't my cup of tea and that I wasn't very good at it.  I'm still fascinated and absolutely floored by them.  I still flip through copies of Fine Scale Modeler and marvel at the works of art contained in its pages, just as I was 20 years ago.

As I've said many times, though, I like to explain my craft in the hopes of encouraging others to take it up, as well.  There's no magic in what I do.  Anyone out there really could do what I do.  Six years ago, I looked at the work of those on this forum such as Doom/BlackOps, Gekko, and Sentinel Chicken and was in awe.  I knew I could never hope to do the sort of work they did.  Now, six years later...I'm getting there.  Again, no black magic, just some learned technique and a LOT of time.

Cheers,

Logan

Well, I've been productive with this GB.  So far, I've finished six profiles:

3x Vought V-187 Vikings
1x Heinkel He 46G
1x Handley Page Panther
1x Northrop P-61F Widow

I have two left to do:

1x Vought V-187 Viking
1x Handley Page Panther

...but they both need some pieces from Talos to finish, so I'll start on some other profiles now (not for this GB).  Maybe a V-507 or Heinkel He 100?

Cheers,

Logan

That's FAR too tidy for real modelling, are you sure it's not your wife's?

Congrats.    Very commendable  :)

Thanks!  I didn't realize I had that many in progress.  They were all at one end of the scale or the other, too.  Four of them were about 90% done and just needed a few finishing touches.  The other half were only just started and took a lot of work and time to finish.  These weren't just repaints, too.  I did a couple of new structural elements in these that forced me to take time out to light and shade them.

Cheers,

Logan

This is one of the good things about this GB - it drives people to finish projects regardless of theme.

And in a development that should surprise no one, I can't count.

1x Vought Viking (3 years, 9 months) Done.
1x Vought Viking (3 years, 8 months) On Talos.

1x Northrop P-61F Widow (5 months) Done.
2x Vought Viking (2 months) Done.

NINE down, one to go.

All told, I've completed a dozen profiles in the past six weeks.  I don't think I've finished that many profiles in such a relatively short period for quite a long time.

Cheers,

Logan

So is there any possibility of an extension here or no?  With the Holidays for the next 2 weeks I don't foresee a lot of building time for many of us.  Pushing it until Mid-late January would be good I think.  Thoughts?  So far we have one physical build and Logan's 9 million profiles and Jose's profiles but that's basically it.

I've got two physical builds on the go that should well be done by the end of the year, and another that would benefit from an extension.

I think we already discussed that it could be extended until EO Jan 2014.

Yes indeed, a fine idea as well as a lot of us are "out of commission" for the back half of December! (I'm writing this from stash base Alpha-1 AKA my Parent's house having traveled back to visit for a week!) So keep on keeping on if you can, and if you can just continue the grand strategies for your builds and we can all pick it up after we or our loved one return home  :)
