In the game, Fighters and Corvettes fold their fins for better stowage aboard ship, just like real world navies.  compare with the deployed fins in the picture above this one.

Yellow on. You can see in the bottom pic that the fins are a different shade of Yellow. The rest of the Model is painted Tamiya Camel Yellow. A yellow closer to the orange side (thought it does not show well in these pics.) So I ran out and went to the LHS and picked up some more Tamiya Camel Yellow but I didn't check the rattle bomb closely enough and its made for Polycarbonate R/C car bodies! Luckily nothing melted but this color is VERY close to a light orange. After thinking about what I should do for a few days I decided to just proceed as planned and have the fins a different tint.

Come prepared^

Kind of a neat scheme onto itself. Mental note  :icon_ninja:

Had to mask off individual sections^

The Fins went superbly. The Airbrake was a pain from start to finish. overall my airbrush functioned perfectly (no jams! or spatters!) The masks peeled up a bit here and there was some overspray in certain areas (all these things are to be expected with a project like this. The First stage of masking red is complete (stripes) . Hope to get stage 2 going (Other parts that must be red to break up all that yellow) in a few days.

Touch up needed here. I ran out of time and paint yesterday. I am still debating if I should break out the airbrush one last time for the front Intake section, after that its all hand brushed touch ups and additions. Then Gloss coat. But in the mean time LOTS of touch ups!  :icon_swat:

Its getting there! If placed on a contest table, eyes from across the room should be drawn to it. Having followed from the cutting of styrene stock, this is also a very well constructed replica, engineering-wise.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate all of you.

I am very happy to hear that you are enjoying the step by step process, was hoping it wouldn't be boring!

The paint isn't as difficult as it looks, it just takes time. I make sure to remind myself to be patient with me, and there will be some peel, or overspray here or there, and it won't be perfect but I can fix it or cover it later. I give myself lots of time. I usually mask one whole modeling session, and then paint the next day. The longer the masks are on the more likely they are to fail so I try to keep masking and painting as close as my patience will allow. If it all goes right you spend a lot of time masking and very little time actually airbrushing. The surfaces can be tricky so I sometimes do small sections surrounded by masks one at a time. Its the same old masking formula super sized LOL. Planning is important. This is the second time I have done this in depth scheme with an airbrush, its easier this time because it was easier to plan ahead. Hopefully next time goes even better!

Bought this built online, stripped the paint and donated the Top front/cockpit/canopy to another project leaving me with a "canoe"

Built up some legos, and used super glue in the gaps. Plan on using styrene to hide the lego origins at least a little.

Overall as of today.

Still need to add some colors and paint and then from there its gloss coat and decal time followed by weathering. There will be probably be a lot of weathering. This thing is meant to look like a brute, a pure war machine, so as far as im concerned its far too pretty looking. I plan on using weathering and decals strategically to cover up paint errors since I don't have any more yellow left.  :icon_killbill:

So after working out with a friend on Friday I cam home and settled down for a while. Then I realized the weather was gorgeous and after three days of nastiness. I could finally gloss coat!  :icon_surprised: So I sprung into action and as quickly as I could (Nice weather turns to wind very fast where I am) I finished the touch ups and scraping paint off with a tooth pick. threw the gloss rattle bombs into warm water, and I  arranged everything onto cardboard boxes:

These fins may look like a robot hand but I put them that way so that no part of the actual piece is touching and giving the gloss coat a chance to "glue" them to the card board. I made sure to use lots of gloss on these because they are foldable so my grubby hands will be touching them a lot.

It was a complete success overall. Which is wonderful because I hadn't planned on doing it that day. Typically when I rush through something like this disaster strikes but this time everything seemed to work out.  8)

Onto decaling... Lots and Lots and Lots of decals:

I spent a Good hour or so going through every decal sheet I could find looking for "interesting" stencils/marking/ stripes etc. I plan on doing one piece or small section at a time, to stay sane. decaling will take several long sessions over many days. Still havn't decided on squadron markings, yet. also want an array of kill tallies.

Fins. Couldn't decide on Tail emblems, but after consulting my brother he made a great case for option B which is a cut down version of the F-22 Raptor emblem. I also decaled the speed brake, and the spines but didn't get a pic. hope to work on the main body soon but work is getting insane. So this is all I can post for right now! thanks for looking!

I used two "E"'s to make a black box. Gotta get creative sometimes! There is still a little red in there from where the paint used to be so I will add yet another decal there. Hoping to finish the decaling tonight and have the wash applied today or tomorrow.

I like that thought!  :)

I planned on doing a few more decals then a wash. suddenly I realized that there was nothing stopping me from adding the gray pieces you saw earlier in the thread (remember those?) and washing them all at once. So it suddenly looks a lot more put together and closer to the finish than I thought it would today-- which is pretty cool!

added the white tab "Intake Locks" as I call them:

Just measured and rattle bombed white real quick so they can be washed as well, make it stand out a little more. So Wash tomorrow I am guessing (Work needs to cooperate on that one) If not then, Tuesday for sure. Once the wash is on, its Flat coat, pastels, battle damage, and final assembly. Labor of Love I tell ya!

Moved from the Bench Clearing GB

My original Taiidan Tomcat being refurbished. Its been the Paint job that has been slowing this one down... I need to find one I like.

Fins finally fitted!!

My sci Fi British hornet that was "killed" by a falling picture frame hung above it!!  :o

Fins removed, along with intakes and new spacey fairings added to cover them. You can barely see in the above pic too that one of the Leading edges has been cut off (more on that later)

 :icon_music:

Cut off the old spine. See that bulkhead there? I had no clue that was there so I had cut around the edges and could not figure out why it wasn't coming off!

The new spine I made! (before clean up)

Inside the spine. I reinforced it because when I am sanding I don't want it twisting and warping.

A piece of 1 inch wooden block that will serve as the intake being laminated in plastic.

and with panel lines cut in.

Lastly the lip I made from strip styrene, along with the front grate-style intake cover

Experimenting with Salt masking and "Rust" I had the idea that with science fiction you could have different colors of rust. Thus Purple! I might try blue as well. I think green would look too "slimy" and yellow too acidic.

That is brilliant!! ... Got the wheels turning. could be as simple as creating a mulitcolored undercoat and then doing the salt masks with various "rust streaks" added to match the color.  :)

neat colors and nice use of "scrap plastic" for paint testeing!

That means a lot! The feeling is mutual Eddie!

I made these a couple summers ago but it was finally time to construct them. The problem? Well its a flexible 3D object so I needed a way to make them uniform so I hustled to make some impromptu braces after a failed glue attempt revealed they would need it to keep them uniform.

Success! And it made those fiddly bits at the top come together much easier as well!

The Gun in progress. Styrene laminating some very user friendly and easily carved wood (wish I knew the type, but it was like carving a No. 2 pencil)

The aesthetically critical wing boxes in progress. I am using scrap sprue to reinforce the flimsy joints (never throw anything away!)

The outside of the wing boxes next to the gun. You can see here why I prefer the laminated wood method: NO SEAMS! The problem with the plastic origami method is there are seams a plenty! I am going to refine the origami method to get some better results in the future.

I noticed on Star Wars The Clone Wars on CN that the consoles are colored! Doh! Why didn't I think of that?! So I tried with Yellow:

The black lines are not perfect but I was not worried about perfection here, and most them won't be visible save for a few. A lot of what you are seeing are "practice swings" I do like it though, opens up even more possibilities

Quick update:

Quote
The Kadesh Swarmer is one of the most dangerous fighters encountered in the Homeworld War; it is 50% faster than the Kushan Scout, yet it mounts corvette-class guns and is better armored than a Defender. Unfortunately, it achieves this superior performance at the expense of fuel capacity, carrying less than a third as much fuel as a Kushan strike craft. The Swarmer can remain in combat for only a short time before it must withdraw and rendezvous with a Fuel Pod.

-From http://shipyards.relicnews.com/kadesh/index.html (http://shipyards.relicnews.com/kadesh/index.html)

Homeworld 2: Kadeshi Swarmers in High Command -R.E.A.R.M. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrLsY-r0ED4#ws)

quick vid that shows why the name "Swarmer" is appropriate.  ;)

So there is still a lot of debate about how big homeworld ships are but I love the above art that basically makes it seem like a "space motorcycle"

So here is my mock up of a Taiidan version. 1/48 Tomcat that will be scale-o-ramaed with a 1/32 scale seat.  Love that big F-110 in the back, but I am not happy with the size of the wooden parts and feel they need to be bulked up to appear more like the swarmer in the pics above.

Motorcycles are seen as symbolic of independence and rebellion, but Swarmers in the game are extremely fuel limited in order to make things fair. So I had the idea that rogue pilots would be "busted" to Swarmer units, since thier dependence on fuel and limited range would make it easier to keep them under control. So the backstory that these pilots are free, but also kept very much under thumb is a cool one to me and maybe some day I will write a little more about it. In the mean time Space motorcycles are still flown by rebels.  :)

Cool teaser...is it a movie or a game though?

It is a game. It was created by the same team who did the Original Homeworld in the late '90s. They recently reacquired the naming writes and it has become "Homeworld: Shipbreakers"! rather than "Hardware Shipbreakers" ...The first Homeworld sequel in over a decade. Its still in development but here are a couple trailers to get the imagination humming:

Hardware Shipbreakers Episode 2 - Baserunner - The Legend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmcSMAuo8OI#ws)

Cool massive truck

HARDWARE Shipbreakers Episode 3 - First Contact - Gameplay Preview Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kqNp1fZ9xQ#ws)

Some Game play

From Left to Right, the 1/48 Revellogram Apache pilot painted like a SW Episode III clone pilot, A standard Revellogram 1/48 pilot, A Revellogram badly molded 1/48 scale pilot (note the head that is a big plastic blob), and a Star Wars clone trooper pilot carved from another badly molded blob. I took the blob head you see here and made this guy:

based on this helmet:

The Baserunner monster truck is very inspiring.  Sure would like to see what that would look like in 1:35th scale :)

That figure with the triangular helmet is very intriguing.  Would the angled front of the helmet have any effect on field of view?  It does look like it would provide some effective ballistic protection, probably better than a pair of Oakley's or Gargoyle's in that respect :)

Thanks, Father!

well its been a while since I have broken you the plastic origami skills. I created these 2 years ago (that long ago already!?) and  Needless to say these structures are a tad complex and it was hours of folding, gluing, praying, and checking. (Note: not always in that order)

Demonstrated above with the help of my wonderful assistant Blue Tape. Hopefully you can see how that connects to the nice in game color pictures there, Might be difficult as they are just solid white piles of geometry right now. Thanks for looking! More origami to come of course.  :-\

That is something else,my friend. When you said plastic origami, you really meant it didn't you .   I don't yet see the shape yet but more to come. If you don't already use one, you should make yourself a sanding sheet. It will make things much easier for you. I've also made polyhedrial shapes for ships. You can't beat it for good flat surfaces and sharp clean edges.  If you would like the instructions let me know.

Tres impressive !!!!  I wish I could properly scratchbuild. Straight sheets is about where I'm at currently.  Love the Homeworld re-release info, I'd missed that.  When I first played Homeworld it was like playing my table top Space Opera starship battles in 3d and real time, plus the artwork always reminded me of Peter Elisons stuff and the Terrain Trade Authority books.

Thanks!

Well Homeworld is the original game released in 1999, Followed by Homeworld:Cataclysm (2001ish), and (we thought) the last chapter was Homeworld 2 (2002) . However with the Release of Homeworld:Shipbreakers (TBA) we will finally have another sequel!

If you are not concerned about spoilers here is the Wiki for the original:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld)

And if you really aren't concerned about spoilers here is the Youtube for all the video cut scenes that are the "plot" of the game:

Homeworld Cutscenes: Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfcj9epbJzc#ws)

Homeworld Cutscenes: Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv1ABITJz4I#ws)

Thanks Father Ennis!

The fuselage for the Bomber. It may not look like much, but that is hours of lego engineering  ;D I tinkered with again and again to refine it. You can see I cut off the lego bumps on top, and the holes and other areas will be covered in spare styrene to hide the lego under structure. The engine is separated so it can be more easily painted. (Less masking!)

In a last ditch effort to make due on my model per month goal I broke out this 1/100 Tomcat and got to work:

I hate Canopy masking, but I have been out of modeling for so much of this year it was surprisingly therapeutic!

This was where things got odd. I painted the Underside first along with the Pod/Spine things there underneath the Tomcat and its not a camera trick, the paint was darker!! From the same can --different shades on different days!  :-\ Not a problem though as the darker side is the underside (realistic shadows!) and it will break up the monotony of a single tone with the pods/spines on top. The paint might just be old as it was tacky for days...

Your creations , Mr Tomcat , are strong justification for any violence ever done to LEGO's :) I remember my doubts if using them is really needed, now I don't have any questions about it. I'm using LEGO to make Metal Gear Rex movable and this is excellent solution. I saw this possibility when I admired your completed Taiidan Interceptor, thanks for sharing:) Bomber looks great right now :)

LOL it is for a good cause I swear! I try to use old beat up legos, faded, and cracked, and scratched, ones etc. You can see in the above pics that I am using pieces I rattle bombed gloss black when I was 10 years old! (with poor results!) sanding has revealed the original color. I tend to build structures up and find the right shape, then I take them apart to use the bare minimum of pieces. So I try to preserve as many as I can  :) The bomber there was using about double the amount of pieces before refinement.

It is so cool that I can take a little credit for that awesome Metal Gear Rex! But for the record I think you found an even better use and took it to the next level :)

Ok, so some updates, that are long overdue:

Fins for the "Lego Tophat" Tomcat seen earlier in the thread, You will note that I have a full crosshatch pattern for the pencil lines that will become panel lines

You don't want to overrun panel lines and cause damage that will have to be fixed later, so by having the pencil marks go beyond lets me know right where to stop even when obscured by the straight edge guide.

with all pencil lines erased and the scribed lines left! Very little "oops" in this method. (still some of course, but not much)

All four done!

And their other half, cut down 1/48 Tomcat wings, If you squint you can see where some scribing near the base has been done to match up with their opposite number.

More updates to come! Stay tuned  :)

Thank you!

A small update. I have noticed that the more "to-do lists" I make the less I get done  :-[ So I am trying to just work on the doing and not lists of what I would like to work on (its complicated  ;D) So the last little list I made was a quick look at all the Taiidan models that are nearest completion and I am going to just focus on knocking them out. Luckily, 3 of them are at the paint stage so its going to be a great chance to get back to back practice on the complicated schemes.

I was actually able to mask this one off in record time (thank god its only 1/100 scale!) and it hit with a black rattlebomb:

I was so excited with how it looked I took a picture! (I was so stoked I forgot to remove one of the masks aft the white canopy!)

Here it is the next morning with its additional pieces:

I carefully applied the stripes to the nose, and then the rest I just used the TLAR method, and I am surprised at how well it came out!

You can see this with primer and then the base Gunship Gray by scrolling up on this page! Always rewarding to see all the masking pay off. I still havn't decided on the squadron markings for this, and another 1/48 scale tomcat... I have a million ideas but narrowing them down is vexing.

I went with a "higher line" so the black "glass" starts about half way up. I think its looks pretty good!! and fits with the homeworld style very nicely. I gloss painted the whole thing after taking these pics, but the gloss is tacky and refusing to dry  ::)

I know, not enough stripes.

Very happy with how these turned out!

On the other hand...

I have never had a perfect masking job. There are always small mistakes, what surprised me is these mistakes didn't happen at the edges, but were a fault of failing to be more careful with the masking in the center!! Doh! failing at the basics! Well luckily this is a starfighter, and so black smudges don't look inappropriate. I havn't tried to remove them yet either.

This was an unpleasant surprise too, I primed this well over a year ago!! did not expect the paint to lift with the mask all the way to the original desert pink!! Well at least I know where to "chip" and weather!

Close up of the intake mouth and front cannon, with Euro I sprayed on.

I used to have a goal of doing a "nothing but rattle bomb" model, I accomplished that goal a while ago, but it occured to me that my last 2 models fit that criteria too!! I do prefer airbrush, but I don't have it set up here yet...

Thanks for stopping by!  :) And may the schwartz be with you.

Nice going here!  8)

On the subject of canopies, why not paint the black bits from the inside? That way it looks "deep", like you're looking into a space that's too dark to make out detail, rather than looking at a flat surface.

I agree and I almost always do that (I did it on the Hornet Canopy, though it may not be obvious in the pics) As for the 1/100 Tomcat It has no clear parts  to use that trick on  ;)

Glad you like it!

I am a huge fan of the B-2, Just love the menacing look of it. I was struck by inspiration in a couple different ways. I originally was looking at this:

Speed Agile Concept

I think with the big fans up front it has a sci fi look, but I thought it would be a huge challenge to work those  fans into A B-2 kit. I had the idea of diving the B-2 in half, using styrene on the bottom, and then adding the fans and underside seperately, plus I get 2 flying wings out of the deal since the bottom of the kit can still be used! Scale-o ramed to 1/48 (maybe even 1/32!)

This is the notoriously bad, 1/72 scale testors kit:

Made the cut to line up with a "rib" inside the top half

Here is a side view of the cut along the rib makes filling sanding and cutting a straight line much easier.

How it looks without the wing tips yay! think it looks more "fighter-class" like. think A-6 Intruder or A-12 avenger II

This is the outline cut out on posterboard (such a distinct shape :)) that will be used to establish the shape of the bottom half. The trick is figuring out an efficient way to get the many styrene plates together and getting them strong enough. .040 is a perfect fit for the top half and fits flush.

unfortunately, This project is on the back burner already,  :( Just a lot going on, but I am super excited about the concept of. I am still trying to solve some building hurdles before going any further. The good news is I know what scheme I want!

Much Appreciated, The Hornet seemed to work out pretty well, and I'm lucky It cooperated. Some decals are "make or break" and this was one of them.

The trick was cutting them up enough!  ;D

I love your model more and more... :-*

Thank you Tophe. Its so great to feedback from everyone, these models take a lot of time to build and have a lot of steps, and although they always leave me satisfied, its nice to hear that others enjoy them as much as I do. I'm going to expand this thread a wee bit, and include some other stuff.

I normally hesitate on this because I start side projects dabble with them and then never work on them again, but its looking like I am making enough progress on this one that its worth showing. I also caught Voodoo fever, and started working on an already built but busted model finished by someone else from evil bay:

Lastly I came up with a concept I'm calling "A Blank Canvas" or (ABC!) I have bought a lot of previously built and finished models from Evilbay. I bought these with the idea that they can be restored which indeed they can... but it will take more time than just starting a new kit. Since I tend to stick to my favorites, I usually have plenty of fresh unstarted ones in the stash so using extra time restoring doesn't make sense. If I want something super detailed I will simply go to the stash and start it right from the finish. So I am resisting the urge to "fix these" and instead    just  build them up, and hit them with primer so I have a "Blank Canvas" for any tips or techniques I want to try. Most of these cockpits are nothing to write home about, I'm not a fan of working on cockpits, and since practicing that is not the goal, most of these ABC models are going to have covered and painted clear parts, I can paint windows on later. So I look forward to posting some pictures in the future, and having these models on Hand to work on tips and techniques and weathering, without having to use a new kit, that would take weeks.

Thank you all again

Voodoo Update (actually did this several weeks ago and just havn't updated!):

New fin drawn up with CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) This actually took many tries for me to be satisfied

Traced onto a spot on some well used thick Styrene sheet

The original plan was to cut off the whole fin and then lots of PSR, reconstruction, eventual dissatisfaction at all that needs to be done, and finally shelving the whole project for possible years, but then I came up with a better plan!

Cut off part of the fin, and then made smaller cuts to make it fit and look more natural. So I was done in an afternoon instead of weeks or even years if my history is anything to go by!

yay!

I then laminated it on each side with another layer of sheet styrene. Sharped eyes will also noticed the little organic curvy notch I added to better blend with the original voodoo tail there toward the bottom, it was far too flat in that part

And sanded it to round the edges.  hello tail fin!

I did some very light pastel weathering, just put on tape masks and went around them, the original is not very weathered but I need some to avoid it looking like a toy (it still might anyway!) I have to add some chipping here and there (very little) and then finish the engines and this bad boy is done.

Huge news on the Homeworld Front! The Remastered Edition is being released on my Birthday! February 25th!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXjI3DgyOqM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXjI3DgyOqM)

So thats pretty cool!! Not everyday a Game from 1999 gets remade/fully updated -over 15 years later!

In other building news though, in novermber I started tinkering with a simple Taiidan fighter made with Legos. The Goal was to make it cheap, quick to build and easier to paint so I could test out new schemes and colors. I thought about entering it in the The Book/Movie/Game…GB, but I was worried I wouldn't be able to finish in time. It was accurate but man how could I NOT be in that GB!  :-\
Anyway here is some of the highlights of construction and experiments to find something that worked.

Paper test Fins added. Notice also the different colored Legos. My plan is to save time and cut down on masking by gluing only certain parts. leaving some removable and taking advantage of the uniform size and easy building ability of the legos.  :)

Nose sensors^

Finding Canopies was a pain, couldn't find something I really liked.

I had a really convoluted plan to drill the barrels out using three pieces. Ended up using just one piece and drilling it (Sometimes you outsmart yourself)

I also looked to have few visible bumps to remove. replacing them with Styrene strip

The cool thing about Legos is they are easy to build jigs for. I created one to drill a hole for the stand.

More updates to come  :)

So the trick to this, is knowing what parts to glue, and what subassemblies not to. Here is everything painted.

There has to be 2 "Waves" of masking and painting but the second wave is relatively minor and includes things like the engine. and the stripes on the intake:

and of course the stripes:

but even this is made easier because throughout the model all the stripes are the exact same width. So there isn't varrying sizes of tape to measure, and then measure onto the tape and cut. Its all uniform, so I just cut the tape and apply it.  :)

Add some glue and put it together:

Boy its been a while!! Had a little guy, moved, started a new job, and everything got thrown on the backburner! Here is stuff I was working on Prebaby, that I took pictures of and never got a chance to post:

Taiidan Intruder:

Instrument panel with snazzy new screens (complete with blurry pic!)

NACES seats added to the old after a cut

quick Mock up of the modifications together... Something I just don't like about it though. I want to bring it back to the drawing board.

More posts to come soon  :)

Miniature human projects are always for more time consuming and demanding than styrene ones, although they don't tend to take anywhere as near as long to complete, only infancy, school and college / university to see them through, about 20 to 25 years, much quicker than the average modelling project.

Hey, welcome back!

I agree with you, and this brings me to my next post: Homeworld came out in 1999, and the concept art was released online and floating around for years and years now. Amazingly enough for a 15 year old game, the story is not over. Last year the Homeworld Remastered was released along with an official concept art book:

Which I bought immediately (I had been wanting a book like this for a decade and a half) and read at 3AM with a sleeping baby on me. (very helpful from a modeling standpoint BTW)

So where this gets interesting is there is now several iterations sometimes 4 or even 5 of the same design with various level of detail. Here are some examples of what I mean:

Taiidan Bomber concept^

In game original^

Fan created high definition version, worked on before announcement of official HW Remastered^

HW Remastered^

So one of the reasons the A-6 has a clipped tail, and F-14 wings is because I was going off the original in game, but the rules are a lot more varied now; the graphics improved, namely things that were previously faceted are now nice and round, which is a lot more friendly to the Round and bulbous A-6.

We are also on the verge of a prequal game Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak  (previously under  the name "Shipbreakers") here is a cool Gif:

The first one is a future stealth Hog!  ;)

Actually have some plans based (loosely)on that sketch  >:D Just have not gotten to them...yet. It involves an A-10, and an Apache helicopter front. But I have yet to find something that will serve as the large White (Phalanx looking sensor up front)

Thanks for the Bump and art Weaver!!

Cockpit work from a ways back I have yet to post^^ And some (very small) work for new fins a few nights ago:

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1527/25046618836_1cde16d742_b.jpg

Small progress is still progress, but I wish I could do more. So in the above photo I removed the lumps at the base of the fins that come with Revellogram Tomcats, and I have drilled holes and cut slots so I can put in new fins. The plan is to give all the fins a universal tab, so I can switch them and see which ones I like most, and give them some room so I can slide them forward or back to place them in a spot I like the most.

I am caught between 2 worlds. On one hand I want to plan, and sketch and do long marathon builds, and OTOH I just want to do some "sprint builds", and just get some stuff done so as to not be bogged down with perfecting my plans and getting the mojo going!  :-\

I have a 1/100 scale super hornet that needs to be finished, but meh. Super hornets. They're cool, but what can I adjust?

I had the idea of making the nose like an F-35 (which I love-- insert insult here) and I have a new motor tool that Santa got me, so it was my first chance to use one. Started with balsa wood

so consulting a picture of an F-35 nose on my phone and grinding and sanding away I had this. Hmm  ::)

no going back!!

didn't like the wood nose so I flipped the hornet nose I just cut off over and started grinding and sanding... hey not bad.

but it doesn't fit... hmm How can I make it fit without major operations? (sexy F-8 Crusader look though no?)

Made some cuts to both nose and plane made some test fits and recuts and...

hey!! alright!

And the finished product some more (but not much) filling and sanding:

Pretty cool! So I need to make some other adjustments to get it on the road. I know what you are thinking, jeez TT does everything with you have to be F-35s? Because yes. Yes it does.  ;D I'm still brain storming pretty well and getting into the habit of drawing and sketching more. Thinking out loud. I plan on building some models and doing some little tests and samples here and there in order to flesh out more ideas and learn what I like and what I should keep going with.

:) thank you for stopping by!

That's excellent work! I like the F-35, especially the C version, IMHO, the bigger wings and stabs make it look perfect. Can't see a problem with it being an influence on your model, i was very influenced by it when i was building my F-16W.
Looking forward for more on that Superbug! :)

Nerd alert!!! Jotted my process down on a post it note to try and make sense of the proper steps.  :-\

as I work out the specifics for my ever expanding Tomcat Project, I know I will need lots of wings so I started building them a pair at a time (limited amount of clamps)

Took the wing from an already built Tomcat to make some fins. Didn't work the way I hoped! Was able to split the other one ok though-- 50 percent success!!

Size comparison with one of the scaled up F-35 fins... which I cleverly names "F-35 like"

I then cut it, at about the same spot to provide roughly the same dimensions/size . I grabbed a 1/72 scale Tomcat wing and compared it also. This is from a snaptite 1/72 Tomcat, and is actually slightly underscaled compared to Hasegawa Tomcat wings. So I might use more accurate 1/72 scale wings. So there we have it, 3 sets of fins for 3 slightly different looks.

tough to see with the white, but its a lengthened wind screen to more resemble this:

https://p3d.in/QMOIN

A quick scale jump, this is a 1/72 Scale Hasegawa Tomcat that is devoid of a cockpit for another project, so it will be getting a new non transparent canopy (nothing to see anyway) and some of the more bold ideas will go to it, and maybe some other 1/72 scale cats.

intake screens (lots!)

Theoritically I do  ;D. My goal is to do lik AXOR does and have Profiles and models and have both informing the other.  :) Maybe even some background or backstory, but the more I get caught up in that, the less building gets done, and the mroe indecisive the builds.

So in the Homeworld Art book the Designers mentioned that the Taiidan have ships of 3 Sections (kind of like Insects I guess) So I used a Profile from Willy Peeters and the lovely DACO book and did a quick demo:

Forward section line is roughly where a lot of Tomcat Models have their subsections. Another thing the Book mentioned is that the Taiidan paint their ships, in fact they paint them in snazzy stripes,

However their opposites, the Kushan paint Subsections, and then join them together:

with minimal paint afterward. So very helpful tips that will help get things right. Easier to paint whole sections and glue them on too when I decide to get a Kushan ship going. I might you a combination of both subsections, and painted sections for some of these Tomcats. But one thing is for certain, I need to get some painting done  >:( Time to see some color

Lastly, I discovered the font that Homeworld uses Eurostile, and its a little detail that I overlooked that I really should not have. Trying to create a fusion of Space Fighter and Tomcat is kind of challenging, you want it to look like the original F-14, but not too much like the original I think making some decals using these numbers and fonts will help create that futuristic Science fiction feel and as it turns out,Eurostile is extremely common to science fiction:

Got to admit, when I was 1st looking at it, I thought this;

needed a similar nose to this;

https://p3d.in/QMOIN (https://p3d.in/QMOIN),

too.

Are thinking like with the Longer, angular Canopy and a under hung sensor?  ???

Partially, I was thinking with a slightly longer canopy but retaining the curved F-18 form down the front, with a definite "yes" to the underslung sensor.

I was thinking with more of a droop cockpit, as per the image

https://p3d.in/QMOIN (https://p3d.in/QMOIN),

with a longer canopy, retaining the curved F-18 form down the front, & an underslung sensor (suite).

But (& this is important) it's your model, & your aesthetic applies, not mine! ;) :)

Darn I was hoping it would be a little closer-- Might just be stuck with it, as the cuts appear rather permanant  ;D

He is alright I guess  ;D LOVE AIRPLANES. The obsession is growing by the day. He now makes Roaring Noises while flying things around the house.   :-* My boy LOL

pluggin away with Intake work:

all the added braces so I can do this:

after a lot of cuts:

That is it for now, I am hoping to get a longer and more comprehensive update here soon  :)

So this is the "great white" its a 1/48 Revellogram Tomcat built from "cast off" parts. Old beat up pieces that I had toyed with and cut up. I put it together. I cut holes in the Top as you can see, and I removed the Horizontal Stabilizers and cut holes there too along with holes where the glove vanes are. Some Tomcat kits come with these, but not revellogram F-14s. So the purpose of the great white is to be able to add and remove pieces to see how they look, its white to blend in with the styrene pieces. hopefully this will give a good look at the shape and size of things before I pick what I want and finally finalize the design.

As much as I try to stay on track with F-14s, I have been straying into the other teen series fighters (I plan on building at least one of each in the Taiidan Style sometime):

Intake for a paper model sized against a 1/48 F-16. The goal is to make 3 of these in 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 (likely resin) for F-16s of those size with the secondary objective of being able to add them to other models to "convert them" as underside intakes are a stand out feature. Still a long way from that as I have to trace the paper model onto styrene fold, detail, and mold them. So for right now its this:

I was going to scab over the landing gear bay, but then why lose that detail? So I went from the other side to keep some depth. (this is the old Monogram early F-16, so I need any detail I can get!!)

Be bold!

Made find from other discarded fins.

Also toyed around with the F-8 front:

Here it is with an italeri 1/48 F-14. Its roughly proportional to the original Tomcat. The length is the same.

I then toyed around with a spare F-14 Tomcat cockpit. Not bad! Should be able to make that fit with not too much surgery in the future.

So here are the plans as they stand today. If you are lost thats alright, even I am a little lost at times, too many ideas, not enough time. Destinations with no idea how to get there! So I have to pick and choose.

F-14:

1/32. Cut and measure parts (long term project)

1/48: Lo Conversion- Basic F-14 with minimal changes
1/48: Concept Scout- F-14 designed to look as much like a piece of concept art as possible. Like the Lo conversion above, relatively minimal changes.
1/48: Great white

1/72: Is where the really bold concepts will be seen as they are smaller and easier to cut and PSR etc. So I am hoping to have some of those going soon.

Teen Series:

F-14
F-15- probably a few variants
F-16 -Probably a few variants
F-18
F-18E/F- one off so far

F-35 Layout F-14 (hope to start on that very soon)

Thanks! I am hoping to get some more Italeri Tomcats, but they are kind of pricey (so are Crusaders for that matter  :-\ ) Guess I will just have to build the ones I have and buy more later, like an actual modeller  and not a stash builder with more ideas than kits, and more kits than time!  :-\ :-\

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=6590.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=6590.0)

This is not my finest model. In fact its a solid 5 footer, but I will tell you what, it was a blast to build and I learned a lot of things I will and won't do in the future. There were some small but important firsts, like the first time I have used the proper font on the tail number, and an official canon Homeworld symbol. Previously I had used the standard military block letters/numbers from decal sheets, along with regular  military squadron emblems. I also tried to mask pieces individually and then join them together, as opposed to building the whole model and then striping it. I tried to take advantage of the kits "natural breakdown" and stripe the sub assembly accordingly. I might explore that more.

I used Gunship Gray, which has a bluish tint. I am probably not going to use that in the future and stick with a more conventional Black/white type. Blues are the Taiidan opponent's colors. So I will use it for their (The Kushan) ships.  I don't like the gunship gray look, but oh well lesson learned. I botched the cockpit floor. Totally mismeasured it. So next Time I will glue it straight to the bottom of the Fuselage instead of elevated like I did. The yellow/red fins are a little on the darker side (though not bad) shade wise, so I will incorporate those colors too in the future on other builds since they work well ( I want to avoid using the exact same colors everytime, need some variety.) I don't like where I masked the canopy white. I feel I need to refine that better especially on the front windscreen.

Fun with Lego!

I have a bunch of fin parts left over from all the 1/48 scale F-14 fins, So I though I should come up with a little lego design for them. But first, I wanted it to actually work in lego (obviously the model version of this I can cheat and just glue) here is the result:

I made different Canopy sizes too. I'm happy with it. Coolest lego homeworld creation by far for me. I figured as long as I had the legos out, I should see what other ideas I could make happen:

That did not look as cool as I hope it would. I moved the Canopy forward and it still didn't help  :( Oh well back to the drawing board.

Looking at it, I wonder if building up the dorsal fuselage so that the rear of the cockpit has between 50% & 100% more fuselage depth below it & a shorter, less symetrical radome would work?

Possibly the existing radome would work, cut at the base, so it angles down, & then cut slightly forward of that, so the angle is at about 45o to the bottom of the fuselage & faced in sheet styrene?

What yellow did you use for the stripes? It looks nice and solid.

I used Rustoleom "gloss Tuscan sun" I try to keep yellow to the more orange spectrum as opposed to the very yellow. I think it looks better personally.

The darker color is dark gray primer. I wanted to avoid black in order to get some scale effect
