Cross sections
« on: November 25, 2018, 09:05:45 PM »
Help needed, my plea is for anyone's assistance in finding out the following. The cross section dimensions of the DC-8, Comet and VC10, along with seating arrangements, as I'm trying to work out if either aircraft could be an alternative to the 707/KC-135.
I have Googlbashed the net and found out about the Boeing 367-80/KC-135/707 as a baseline, but not about the others, so any info, pointers, websites would be great

Thanks in advance

Ken

You could start here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrow-body_aircraft

It doesn't list a diameter for the Comet, but IIRC it's 10'-6"

EDIT: Found a reference, actually 10'-3" OD

DC-8 147”

From page 28 of the DC-8 document on the Boeing Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning page:

I've got the Comet I maintenance manuals at home - I'll have a look through the fuselage and cabin sections when I get back ...

Wow. Is it true that if you spend too much reading the DH Comet maintenance that you could become Comet-ose?
Work in progress ::

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

I've just measured the Welsh Models 1/72 Comet 1 kit I have and the fuselage is 10'-3" diameter

Why would it?  You're just reading Comet-tary?

I've just measured the Welsh Models 1/72 Comet 1 kit I have and the fuselage is 10'-3" diameter

Inside dimensions for the Comet I would, obviously, be a smidge smaller ...

General fuselage/cabin dimensions
 - Interior Diameter = 9 ft 9 inches
 - Int. Cabin Height = 6 ft 6.5 inches
 - Int. Cabin Width == 8 ft 11.75 in.

Seating Arrangement (36-Seater Comet I)
 - 8 pax in 1st class compartment (4 opposing bench seats with tables)
 - 28 pax in coach class main cabin (7 rows of paired seats, aisle on C/L)

Cabin Measurements (with Fuselage Stations)
 - Fwd compartment (Galley/Freight) = 7 feet long
-- Station 8 to bulkhead between Stn 13 and Stn 14
 - First Class compartment = 7 feet long
 -- Between Stations 13 and 14 to Stn 18 [1]
 - Main Passenger Cabin = 29 feet 1 inch
 -- Between Station 18 and Station 36 [2]
 - Rear comp't (wardrobe/luggage/lavs)[3] = 12 ft 6 inches [4]
 -- Between Station 36 and ~ Station 44 [5]
_____________________________

[1] Pressure vessel angles from Stn 17 at fuselage bottom to Stn 18 above wing box

[2] Pressure vessel angles from Stn 26 above wing box to Stn 28 at fuselage bottom

[3] W/Cs are located within the 9 ft diameter pressure dome. Luggage stowage actually extends almost 3 feet into the main cabin along the starboard side.

[4] Length measurement does not include the pressure dome.

[5] Stn 39 to Stn 44 are not vertical - they are more closely spaced at the top of the fuselage than at the bottom.

Wow. Is it true that if you spend too much reading the DH Comet maintenance that you could become Comet-ose?
