My (sorta) latest project
« on: April 29, 2019, 02:56:17 AM »
Well, this is a little different. I’ve got what many modellers would consider a dream come true: free money for modelling supplies and a load of space to experiment with dioramas on! How did this come about, you may ask? Well, I was (when I first joined) a member of my school’s model railway club, which has recently been given a spare cupboard as a room in which to build a railway. Having recently re-joined the club, the teacher in charge has given me one corner in which to build a 1/76 scale military base. I’m looking forward to this....

The first thing I’m building is a gate guardian for the base: an Airfix EE Lightning which the school was kind enough to buy me out of the clubs and societies Budget (which always goes partially unused anyway). I know it’s a plane but I’ve put this thread in the Land sub forum since it is a base, and as such seemed to fit.

Are you going to do it real world style or as a whiff to warp their minds? ;)

This sounds like it should be lots of fun! What time frame are you working with? I'm guessing modern day?

Wow now that's a fantastic opportunity, Mr Duck!

You're in just the right spot to post this diorama and I'm going to enjoy seeing more of your work.

I think the famous E.E. Lightning will make a great looking gate guard.

While I was considering whiffing the lightning a bit, unfortunately, the teacher who runs the club is a bit of a Lightning aficionado who used to go up with his colleagues every weekend to watch them taking off and landing, so he'd see through it a little quickly. Fear not, there will be some whiffery dotted around the base.... >:D

Made some progress yesterday:

Cockpit nearly done, just need to add some yellow to the ejector handle. Which would be somewhat easier if I actually owned any yellow paint....

I’ve also started adding some buildings to the base, a privy and a guard post.

Oh man I want to now. But, since this is set in the late 70s/early 80s it would just be a police box...

Of course it’s a police box,

That keeps showing up in different spots

And times!  .......  So, every so often, remove it completely for a week or so, then put it back elsewhere. ;)

It took me a while, but I have made more progress on this build.

Here it is, pictured inside my highly professional spray booth.

In case anyone was wondering, no, that isn’t the right shade of green. My local hobby shop was out of the right shade, and because I’m an impatient bugger I just bought the closest I could find and hoped for the best....

Paint colour is a constant variable.  Something in the sunshine looks much different than something illuminated by artificial light.  Also cloudy days will turn things upside down and even the correct colour will look a bit off.  So never worry about the paint colour patrol kicking in your door for an unsubstantiated offense such as this.
