Does this bomb make me look fat?

An A-4 Skyhawk carrying a Mark 7 atomic bomb, the largest of a wide range of weaponry the A-4 was capable of carrying

I think that has to be P.S., I've made a Mk.7 and matched it to the A-4 I've got built, it just won't work with that fin hanging down like that.

Was thinking the same. Found this note on the bomb:

The Mk-7, initially produced in 1952, was the first nuclear weapon that could be carried by USAF (and U.S. Navy) fighter aircraft. Although it was carried externally by fighters (F-84, F-100 and F-101), it also could be carried internally by bombers such as the B-57. Because of the lack of ground clearance when hung under a fighter, the Mk-7 had a lower fin that was stowed in a retracted position on the ground and was extended once the carrier fighter was in the air. Capable of either an air or ground detonation, the Mk-7 had a yield in the kiloton range. It became obsolete in 1968 and is no longer in service.

Oooo! now that's interesting Carl, I was basing my thoughts on photos I was looking at of an F-84F with the Mk.7 on the pylon. Those showed the tail hanging out beyond the wing trailing edge with one fin positioned vertical up. But now googling the subject, I see there's photo of both arrangements. Hmm! --think on this I will ---

Conair's diverse fleet of aerial firefighting aircraft have repositioned from the hangars in Abbotsford to bases throughout North America’s northwest. Aircraft are placed at airtanker bases closer to where forest fires occur, ensuring a rapid response when fires are detected. Current bases include Lac La Biche, Slave Lake and Whitecourt in Alberta; Fort St. John, Kamloops, Penticton, and Prince George in British Columbia; Palmer and Fairbanks in Alaska; and Whitehorse in the Yukon. During the North American fire season, aircraft will move to where needed - to other bases within a province, territory or state, or across Canada & south of the 49.

From the best of my very dated memories we did not have too many issues with birds and birds strikes. We did have a team which used shotgun blanks to remind our avian friends that this was a restricted airspace.

'The Monster in the Shadows' indeed! And looking very much like the nose section of a 1950s, Vickers-built Space Shuttle

Mossie Surprise

Took a trip to the De Haviland museum earlier today and was surprised to see something I never realised was a feature on the Mossie prototype.

Handley Page style leading edge slats were fitted to the protoype owing to concerns about possible low speed handling issues. However, they were never used and over the course of history were thought to have been removed. During the the restoration circa 2016, the restoration team were surprised to find they were still attached and had been wired shut and taped over.

I suppose this is common knowledge but it delighted me so I slapped up this picture... and this one:

On the 24th February 1941 while taxying on the rough surface, the tailwheel jammed and the fuselage fractured around the starboard access hatch. The damage was serious enough for the fuselage to be changed and the fuselage of the second prototype, W4051, was used so she is a mixture of both the first and second prototypes but never the less something special.

There is also Mosquito B.Mk.35 & Mosquito FB Mk.VI at the museum and I have some detail shots of the armament layout on the FB if they are any use as refs for anyone.

Big apologies if this is all old hat but I was an excited doggie   ;D

Nice

There's just one thing about the prototype, it doesn't represent the prototype in it's first iteration as it was used to test just about every modification the Mossie got (case in point is the engine nacelles, the original had short nacelles which terminated before they got to the trailing edge). There's not a lot that's original, but you have found one of them.

That's right. And W4050 (ex E-0234) also had a 2 foot shorter wingspan than production Mosquitos - 52 feet 2 inches (15.90 m) versus 54 feet 2 inches (16.51 m). Didn't know about the HP slats though. Maybe stiffening the leading was what allowed them to extend the wings?

From: https://nb-no.facebook.com/groups/MossieSociety/permalink/2971990312840079/
-- Calgary Mosquito Aircraft Preservation - Mosquito Prototype Restoration - Part 7

"The next, and most exciting, part of the underwing restoration was the uncovering of the leading edge slats. The Prototype was the only Mosquito to be fitted with Handley Page Leading Edge Slats. These slats extended automatically when the aircraft dropped its speed, usually on landing. They re-directed the airflow over the wing to increase lift at lower speed. Although the slats worked well in tests, it was decided that the low speed handling of the Mosquito was so good that the additional work involved in installing slats was not worth the effort... Physically the slats were in fairly good condition. There was a lot of corrosion evident when we removed the aluminium straps that were fitted to lock the slats back Fortunately most of this corrosion came from the aluminium straps that were fitted to lock the slats in the retracted position. As these slats were unique to the Prototype is was decided not to lock them back again, but to leave them visible."

Thanks for posting the photos SBG
