Ok so most of will know im a Aircraft builder... Its what i know... But a kits a kit right ? So now i find myself building Tamiya's Challenger 1 (Mk3) for a friend of the family... But i have a odd question that im sure makes sense to Armour builders...

Why in the second stage are those parts at the front bolted on with nuts and bolts instead of being glued on ? They cant move now so whats the point ? Am i building myself into a tank corner ?

Oh when i have something to show dont worry there will be pics :)

Hi!
A pic wouldn´t be bad.

I guess its like on the most of the older Tamiya kits.

These nut and bolts are leftovers (?) of the motorized and remote control versions of the kit as for the holes in the lower hull for the cabels of the remote control and fixing the engine / gear box.

I thought it might be that but i couldnt be sure... Again lack of "Tank" experience

These parts on the instructions A24 and A24 ? Apparently they will hold the idler gear at the next step...

No point showing you the model as well... Its just a big black shadow at the moment...

Hi Chris,

now I am sure. This parts are fitted with nuts and bolts so the track tension can be adjusted on the motorized models.

guess to get it moveable you have to remove this little nose on part 24.

Heres another question has anyone tried Alclad on the soft plastic tracks that come with tamiya tanks ? I didnt even think about it but my only gunmetal is Alclad.. :/

just paint them various shades of brown (for mud) first and then dry brush them with gun metal. Most modellers do the reverse, which is wrong 'cause from my experience mud gets between track links, not on top of them.

Well i thought i best let you guys know how its all getting along... And the answer is slowly, because again i dont normally do tanks so im getting easily confused as i go along...

This is the beasty that the customer has brought me... He wants it in NATO though like his one was :)

This is generally why i prefer aircraft... The repetition is killing me, Oh and i know the green looks bright but its just the camera :)

This shows the difference between the undercoat black i used and the proper nato black..

Rear panel took AGES... Mainly because my references all conflict with each other... Good job i can ask the guy im building it for

Fuel tanks were painted silver, hairsprayed, brown, hairsprayed than NATO greened... This is halfway through

At the end of the day plastic is plastic but its more because i dont know the subject... So i need to research every single little thing rather than just getting on with it... Spitfires i know inside and out, Challengers ? Not so much lol

Certainly a new experience. Looking good so far though. I like building tanks because clear parts and interiors are rare :)

How odd, i was disappointed there was no interior lol And thought it odd the hull above the wheels doesnt blank off, although i guess once the skirts and such are on you wont see anything...

Quick update:

Tanks are now on having been painted and weathered:

And tonight side skirts and front armour was affixed and completed... Now time for the turret !

Thank you guys it means a lot knowing that i can do these armour subjects some justice :)

Quick update had to rebuild the front after i realised the extra armour had to go on first :)

Also testing Photobucket so is this coming up ok ?

Yeah it seems after the first gulf war all sorts of combinations of armour appear... I showed the guy im building it for some references and he said load it up

Its typical tamiya ! Goes together much easier than it would sometimes appear... most injection marks for example are hidden on the inside... There is some fit issues with the locker on the back of the turret but

1: You cant tell when the turrets on cos the problem ison the underside.. And
2: You can always just replace it with the one from Accurate Armour if it annoys you that much...

Well ive got plenty of plans to go already so far so i'll leave that idea to someone else lol

Still i got the black on... Undercoated in Vallejo Model Air black then gone over in a patchy pattern in Model Air NATO Black :)

Just seen how awful these photos are i'll try and get some sharper ones done tomorrow :/

Thanks guys... Ennis that did make me giggle :) Im now trying to create some decent looking camo net for the bin at the front... Not sure if it'll work but we'll see...

Ive also been highly inspired by this new stuff when it comes to the base...

I was gonna simply do a concrete looking base but now im not so sure as this stuff has started giving me ideas
