Orlogsværftet H.M.II (Heinkel He 8)
« on: May 12, 2022, 03:42:51 PM »
In the mid 1920s the Danish Naval Service (Marinens Flyvevæsen) was looking for a successor to the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplanes. By Heinkel in Warnemünde they found a two-seat civilian plane, the He 8, that could be converted into a three-seat military plane. Six were ordered and a licencing agreement obtained. The six german build planes entered service in 1928 and the marine shipyard in Copenhagen (Orlogsværftet) built another 16. The last three as late as 1938.
In danish service the He 8 was called H.M.II (Hydro Monoplane 2), and it became the workhorse of Marinens flyvevæsen. Some were used on Greenland for survey. These planes were painted red so they could easier be found, should they crash on the ice.
In 1938 the planes were camouflaged, but their service ended with the german invasion in april 1940. At that time Orlogsværftet were building their successor: The Fairey P.4/34 - the ancestor to the Fairey Fulmar and the Fairey Battle. The time of the floatplanes had come to an end.
The surviving H.M.IIs were stored and destroyed by sabotage in 1943.

My model will be based on the sad remains of an Frog Vickers Vimy and a lot of plasticcard.

I admit, that this is not a what-if project. But there will be a lot scrapbuilding.

Poor Vimy! :icon_sueno:

At least it's going to find a purpose in its after-life! :D

And I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the rules about anything having to be a whif, & I wrote them! ;)

The wings are now cut up, and compared with the scale drawings. I think it will work out

That looks more like a scratchbuilding project with some model parts. How's the old Vimy's plastic? Is it brittle?

Just in case - this book: Scale Model Aircraft in Plastic Card has some excellent techniques, especially for making ribbed wings.

It is! I love the H.M.II ... especially in that all-over Grønland red   :-*

So, yeah, well worth all that polystyrene carnage MAT!

Now the wings are getting into shape, and its time to give the fuselage some thoughts. I'll try to make it from the remains of an Heller Amiot 143, which lost its wings to a Dornier Do 217G floatplane project some years ago.

After a lot cutting, gluing and despair, I had to realize, that the fuselage of a Heller Amiot 143, could not be turned into the form of an Orlogsværftet H.M. II. So now I'd started to construct the fuselage, floats and tailplanes from plasticcard. Right now I'm awaiting the delivery of plasticcard in the appropriate thickness.

The load of plasticcard have arrived, so I'm have started building the fuselage. It's still rather early in the process, but you get an idea of what it will be like.

Pieces of the floats from two Revell Junkers F 13 kits and some plasticcard (N scale car siding) are the basic for the floats of the He 8

All the pieces are now glued together and the plane have received the first layer of the Grønlandsrød (Greenland red) paint.
