I’ve got a Viking in the stash!

So do I, plus 2 more Trackers, a Catalina, several bombers & a couple of ships that could be shoe-horned into the GB. :D

My issue, right now, is TIME & the lack thereof. :icon_crap:

Keeping an eye on the GB is one thing, finding time to build for it is a completely different kettle of fish! However, I shall keep trying to find some space! ;)

Looking at (not committed) Revell B-2 ATB for maritime patrol.   Could be combat or SAR type.   Have concept basics figured.
Point is to avoid overly complex mods so is buildable within time window.   Be traveling, can't start until mid May.

Just had a look at my Catalina.

1994 boxing (per ScaleMates) of the 1964 Airfix mould, manufactured by Heller in France, under the Humbrol umbrella. :-\

Bucket loads of flash & warped ... Oh, man, is it warped! :o

Still, it's the most likely candidate for this build, followed by my (original 1978 boxing) Hasegawa 1/72 Viking S-3A (the Italeri 1/48 S-A/B is going to require more time & effort than I can spare).

I just remembered I have an ancient Bison kit in the stash. (The Soviet aircraft, not a Buffalo.) It’s mostly assembled but needs repair work and it’s never been painted. Probably to far along but could be interesting. I’ve been wondering what to do with it for a long time.

Wasn’t there a conversion kit to make the J model? How about the turbo powered Tracker? Wasn’t that Taiwan?

Not really maritime patrol but might help sprout some ideas.

The Taiwanese AIDC S-2T is one example of that TPE331-powered Turbo Tracker conversion. But, oddly, the S-2T Turbo Tracker has a bunch of Canadian-made electronics - eg: the Litton Canada AN/APS-509 search radar (although some sources claim AN/APS-504) and the CAE AN/ASQ-504(V) MAD antenna.

So, a subtle whif would be an S-2T style electronics/sensor fit on a PT6A-powered Conair conversion.

a PT6A-powered Conair conversion.

Which conversion is that?

Given the TPE331 Turbo Trackers have 1227 kW (1645 shp) turboprops, something similar on the PT6 side would probably require either a -67 or -68 variant or even PT6T Twin pack.

Built in Abbotsford, BC, first one flew in 1988.

Of course, there's also this route:

Cool! But also prompting a few questions:

- The twin tails on the Design 215 were to better handle the T64s' extra power?

- Both Design 165 and Design 215 were intended to be new-builds, right?

- Any reason that the Design 165 couldn't have been a Tracker rebuild programme?

I'm wondering about the feasibility of an earlier-than-OLT CP-121 upgrade (since the CF had T53s in their CH-118s and CX-84).

I'm wondering about the feasibility of an earlier-than-OLT CP-121 upgrade (since the CF had T53s in their CH-118s and CX-84).

Being as Designs 121, 137 (tanker), 142 (COD) and 165 were relatively straightforward
re-engined developments of the Stoof, it could be a rebuild program. T53s were proposed
for all including the original 165 proposal which was changed to T55s.

Interesting note from Francillon's Grumman Aircraft since 1929:
"In 1987, the Canadian Department of National Defense announced that IMP Group in
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, would re-engine a CP-121 with 1,059-eshp Pratt & Whitney
PT6A-67AF propeller-turbines driving six-blade propellers and that this experimental
conversion was likely to be followed by the re-engining of twenty-seven additional aircraft.
The re-engined CP-121s will probably be fitted with Spar Falcon FLIR (Forward Looking
Infra-Red), Litton Canada APS-504(V) radar, and Marconi Canada ARV-509(V) Omega
very low frequency navigation equipment."

... and pigs will fly.  ;D

Thanks Jon. And interesting to see the electronics/sensor fit planned for the CP-121 update. My guess is that the CP-121 update died because nobody at DAR 3 made a priority of an inshore MPA programme.

One puzzle there was why DND was so committed to the Omega nav system (I know that the CP-140s has Omega receivers as well).* Since almost all of the Omega transmitter stations were in the southern hemisphere, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Maybe the US was extra protective of GPS back in the '80s?
