Title: Artesania Latina Cutty Sark
Post by: kpnuts on October 01, 2019, 03:05:01 AM
Hi all i bought this off my brother (he decided it was too frustrating for him) there are a few problems to sort out on it (I need to strip the decking off and square the frame up , it's a bit warped) he took the planking off which has saved me a job (he bought some really thin wood for the planking as he struggled with the supplied wood but it's so thin I can see it disappearing when sanded do I'm going to use the supplied wood) here are some pics, I've managed to get the deck off fairly easily getting the wood off the deck and squaring the frame may be quite a bit harder.
This will be a very slow build.

I think the pins hes used in the transom are way out of scale.

Hi all well I've removed the deck planking squared up the frame and are attached the front decking. I thought I would get away with doing nothing to the rear deck but on closer inspection I think he put the last 2 bulkhead the wrong way round since the second to last is narrower than the last (the phrase one step forward 2 back comes to mind) anyway I managed to get the rear deck off now I'm not sure what to do the frames seem to be impossible to unglue, any suggestions (I've tried steaming over a kettle but they won't budge) would it hurt the plywood if I soaked the stern in a bucket over night.

Fairly good chance it will damage the plywood, as it will soak up water & swell. I'd also hazard a fairly good guess that either the water or the swelling of the wood will damage the adhesive between the layers & you'll get them de-laminating.

Hi all corrected the bulkheads next problem, now the side panels are correctly installed you can see the stern is too shallow so I will probably build this up with wood filler.

That was always an option back when kits were cheap.  Now not so much when you are faced with tossing something in to the bin that cost more than a full tank of fuel for your vehicle.

Well 1 step backwards leads to another step backwards, deck had to come off again. I was about to start planking it again and I thought surely that hump shouldn't be there.

Also I dont know if you can see it from the photo but there is a gap between the bulkhead and the deck (I thought the small oblong hole in the decking was a hatch or something at first but now I see it is a locating peg for the decking) another wrongly glued bulkhead.

I managed to get the bulkhead off (it wasn't fully home due to wood dust and glue formed at the bottom of the joint) (all nicely held in place with dried glue) took ages to cut it all away, anyway as you can see it's all nicely flush and fitted now.

Hopefully I can now proceed as if it were a new kit (apart from the splits in all the bulkheads due to where it was planked before cant think of anything to do about that, if I glue them back together I think it will make it too hard to put new pins in) I'm hoping when its replanked I can drill holes for the pins (they will only be for show anyway)

Ok so I've decided to start decking it, the instructions are not at all clear it shows you decking over the false deck by 2 mm for the first 120 mm and no longer mentions that afterwards (I can understand that as the planking for the sides is 2mm thick) but why stop that overlap at 120 mm, I looked at pics of the waterways on the actual ship and it looks like there is a wooden strip all the way along the ship from the front to the stern step so I decided to continue the strip all the way along, first problem was keeping a 4 mm wide strip at 2 mm on the deck and 2mm in the air so I decided to add the first plank on the sides and put the waterways over that, I figure the more accurate I can get the first plank the rest must be better so I took great efforts with the first plank.

Hi all whilst waiting for my planking to come I decided to start on some of the many other things in this kit, here is a start on one of the cabins.

It's like a kit in its self, I have a feeling I'm going to love this kit, for the calking between the planks I used a lead pencil and just ran it along the edges of the planks.

Hi all I have done some of the planking I've cut the planks at 70mm which I think in this equates to 10 yards at this scale (although the planking supplied is I think is over scale at about 12"wide ) I'm not going to add the nail heads as I've seen on the printed decks available in this scale as I dont believe a nail with a head diameter of 6 mm would be visible at this scale at.

The planking is very slow going but quite satisfying.

Hi all well this is as far as the decking can go at the moment as I've used all the wood left in the kit for this (they were very generous with wood as it was already fully planked so they nearly give you double what you need) I just hope when the new stuff comes it's similar coloured unlike the last bit (for the waterways which were completely different colours) I realise wood is a natural product so can differ I just hope it's not too much different.

Having not worked with wood models this looks really difficult to build.   Perhaps you are accustomed to wood so is not extra difficult.
Either way is looking fine.     Keep going....

Neighbor built a 16-18 foot wood boat in garage.   Cutty Sark could be warm up before you do 1/1 scale.
Impressive deck planking, good as it can get.

Shaping the planks to fit the ever narrowing spaces  (scharf joints I think their called ) is a very slow job (and each one is a different shape) but it is surprisingly satisfying when they finally fit.

Finally finished the planking of the hull, luckily the top half is black so I can hide the bad bits under the paint, I'm really pleased with the bottom half though which is good since I will just be varnishing that and leaving the wood to show.

I must admit its turned out far better than I hoped it would.

Drilled all 52 holes

Bit annoyed with the instructions (and myself for not checking) they tell you to drill 52 holes @ 1.5 mm but the brass wire they supply is only 1 mm

Quote from: wikipedia
gunwale

The gunwale* (/ˈɡʌnəl/) is the top edge of the hull of a ship or boat.

Originally the structure was the "gun wale" on a sailing warship, a horizontal reinforcing band added at and above the level of a gun deck to offset the stresses created by firing artillery.

Over time it remained as a valuable stiffener mounted inboard of the sheer strake on commercial and recreational craft. In modern boats, it is the top edge of the hull where there is usually some form of stiffening, often in the form of traditional wooden boat construction members called the "inwale" and "outwale".

On a canoe, the gunwale is typically the widened edge at the top of its hull, reinforced with wood, plastic or aluminum, to carry the thwarts.

On a narrowboat or canal boat, the gunwale is synonymous with the side deck[citation needed] - a narrow ledge running the full length of the craft.

Hi all finished the planking on the bow (those little bends in the 2x2mm sapeally were a real pain in the bum, that is the 12th set of those, they kept snapping when trying to bend them) I finally managed to get the bend by soaking them in boiling water then giving them 2 mins in the microwave.

Indeed! This is looking excellent

Gunwale: Nowadays, this just refers to the wale being raised above deck height. Why Artesania Latina calls the mounts for the gunwale braces "gunwale covers" is anyone's guess  ???

I know I'm jumping ahead a bit (well quite a lot) but I thought it might be interesting to add some of the deck furniture.

I made another little jig for the covers for the hatch as there are a lot of them and they all need to be the same.

Ok so I'm back on this, first thing to sort is something that's been bugging me since I noticed it in the photos (didn't notice it on the actual thing for some reason) the cowls the anchor chains go into (sorry dont know what they're called) are not the same distances from the hold frame.

So sorted that (disguising the old hole was a pain but I dont think it notices now)

Personally I think this is a great kit (I know some people say otherwise) I dont know anything about the other kit as I've not built them but I'm not too worried about accuracy so i not too bothered about whether it's the right hull lines or too wide, whatever.

They give you ample material to build her (up till now since my brother stripped the planking off and I stripped all the decking off) they give you nearly enough to build her twice, i only had to buy 10 strips of decking to finish that off and have not had to buy any of the side planking and still have loads left over the quality of the materials is top notch my only slight complaint is the instructions are quite confusing (that said they give you a full size high quality photo of the finished model so you can measure and check off that)

More work on her, the forward cabins were very confusing.

The steps were a pain to fit and to be honest they couldn't be used anyway, look where they are you would have to get round the belaying pins and anyway they come out under the poop deck (incidentally that is exactly where the instructions tell you to put them.

Hi all let me start this update by saying (in the politest possible way)

F$%# b%$$/%% hell.

Let me explain.*

I do my modeling in the spare bedroom, I lay a piece of vinyl down on the floor immediately round my work bench and on top of the bench I put the container with all the brass pieces on the bed behind me after removing some parts needed for my next bit of work I set to adding some of the stanchions on the bow and heard this noise as if a plastic container of billions of bits had fallen on the floor, imagine my surprise when turning round to find that is exactly what had happened and of course as it was BEHIND me and not around the vinyl protection area it had fallen on a shag pile carpet, of course the lid came off. So after moving the bed (carpet was under it) shaking the carpet out I got this.

And after several hours

This

So on with the update.

I'm really chuffed with how it's going (I should point out check ALL the stanchinons BEFORE gluing them in place as some of the holes are not clear and removing and drilling them after they are glued in place is no easy task.

I am totally confused with building the yards on this I dont know which bits to use the instructions are pretty much useless assuming you know what bits are what.

I've tried googling for detail of them and all the pics that come up are either too blurred to see or are from behind the mast help please anyone got a picture of the built yard on this kit.

Hi all finished the first yard.

And before I get comments about the order I'm building this in I know it's not per instructions but hey they are pretty useless anyway.

I've added the first real sail.

I know it will get in the way of a lot of the rigging but I intend to tie it up out of the way temporarily. I know the lines from the base of the sail which go toward the stern will get in the way but I will leave them till last.

Apart from the instructions i really like this kit (yes I know it's not an accurate depiction of the Cutty Sark)

It will still be a lovely model of a clipper ship anyway.

Hi all bit more done got the coppering room done (changed the top door as using the kit one and adding the embellishments made the door ridiculously thick) and the central ward room also more rigging on the sail (probably doesn't even notice) but it's there

You cant really tell but some swearing was involved in the practically invisible rigging you cant even see on the sails.

OK so she's back on the bench first thing is to get rid of 18 months of dust

It was a lot harder than you might think

Oh, I think getting the dust off the ol' girl'd be very difficult! :o

Great to see her on the bench again! 8)

More work on this one, did some more to the sails rigging and made a start on the rear boats station.

The supports for the rear boat station are too short (we'll in fact the first one is too short as the ship is wider there so I had to widen the gunwale to accommodate it.

(Bound for) South Australia
 (clipper ship sea shanty)

In South Australia I was born
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
South Australia round Cape Horn
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

I see my wife standing on the quay
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
The tears do start as she waves to me.
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

Oh when I sailed across the sea
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
My girl said she'd be true to me
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

I'll tell you the truth and I'll tell you no lie;
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
If I don't love that girl I hope I may die.
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

And now I'm bound for a foreign strand,
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
With a bottle of whisky in my hand.
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

I'll drink a glass to the foreign shore
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
And one to the girl that I adore.
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

And as we wallop around Cape Horn
(Chorus) Heave away, haul away
You wish to God you'd never been born
(Chorus) We're bound for South Australia

(Chorus)
Heave away, you rolling king
Heave away, haul away
Heave away, oh hear me sing
We're bound for South Australia

This has been good.
I "inherited" the sad remains of a similar model and lots of bits. The ship is no more, but at least I have seen what all the bits were and where they go/went

Hi all I promise I've not given up on this, that ships boat I can only do one plank a day as I have to wait for the glue to dry.

I've added the panel ornamentation panels to the gunwhales.

I can see why Leroy Jethro Gibbs drinks bourbon when he's building his wooden boats! :-\
