Title: 1/700 Scratch built Inter-Island Convoy Dio 1946 (RN/USN)
Post by: Cliffy B on February 07, 2012, 06:08:31 AM
Evening gentlemen!  Here's my entry for the build; a 1/700 Scratch built naval diorama.  It fits into my alternate WWII stories and figured it would be a neat little diorama.  I love building ships and I've recently gotten into scratch building them.  Aircraft are neat as well but ships are and always have been my first love so I figured this would be fitting for the build.

It will be a small 4-ship/boat inter-island relief convoy carrying Seabees and AVGAS between Lajes Field on Terceira and Ponta Delgada on São Miguel in the Azores.  The later was just hit by a German airstrike and needs some supplies.    It will consist of an RN LCT Mk-IV and YOG-86 with a PC-461 Class, and a 110' SC as escorts.  More of the story will come later.

I'm not 100% sure if YOGs were open ocean capable or not.  Anyone know?  I might sub or save her for something else if turns out they weren't.

On to the photos!

Here's the LCT.  Everything save for the stack, bow ramp, and weapons are installed and ready for paint.

For those wondering about the paint schemes they will be varied.  I came across some Ms. 32 camo sheets for the PC and SC so I'm going with dazzle for them.  The LCT I'm leaning toward the RN landing craft scheme of white and blue but I'm not sure yet.  Same goes for the YOG.  They were almost exclusively Ms. 14 or 21.  Might go for jungle green amphib schemes to add some visual interest.  Any suggestions?

The PC, SC, and YOG still need to be puttied and cleaned up while the LCT is almost ready for paint.  All are made from Evergreen with the PC using a piece of Basswood for the main hull.  I'm using USN plans for the YOG and PC, drawings from Friedman's "US Small Combatants" for the SC, and ONI drawings for the LCT.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, etc... are appreciated as always.

-Mike

PS. Greg, the LCT and PC were begun last month.  The LCT was up to the "major parts dry fitted" photo as of Feb 1 and the PC hasn't been touched since Jan.  The SC and YOG were both begun today.  Let me know if that's OK.

Glad you have the eyesight to actually work in such a small scale.

Impressive and certainly demonstrates how to make a small scale ship from plastic card.

These look great! They really make me want to get back into small scale ship scratchbuilding.

If the LCT was sea worthy (although with its flat bottom it must have been a terrible ride on the open sea) the YOG should be as well.

I'm waiting for the accurately-scale seagulls sitting in the rigging!

The YOGs were definitely sea-going. In the link below there's a shot of a pair of post-war YOGs frozen into the Antarctic ice at McMurdo.

Evening gents!  Work has progressed a bit but wound up grinding to a halt for too long.  No way I'll be finishing this one in time.  Mods can you please move it to the works in progress section?  I'm glad you guys like the project.  It will get finished, just not right now.  I'll post a few more photos later.
