Title: articulated Tanks
Post by: raafif on August 15, 2012, 07:40:03 AM
that's right, Tanks with two joined hulls -- there was the XM-800 Twister (wheeled) and a swedish tank.

Here's a model from Cromwell of a 1946 US concept .....

Would never have thought of 5th wheeling a tank. :o
But have to wonder what other countries' designs might look like. ???

The winner of the US Armor Association 1962 tank design competition:

While articulated tracked vehicles are now strongly associated with Sweden the irony is they brought the technology for their line of oversnow vehicles from the Canadians in the 1960s (Canadair RAT).

Though if anyone wants heavy duty articulated check out the Vitaz DT-30!

there are literally dozens of articulated cargo-type trucks from Russia but so far I haven't found a Russian Tank version -- seems such a natural for them !! :-\

The amazing thing about these is that the power-operated joint can enable these trucks to do yoga on the spot !! .... see below (still taken from a Youtube video)

It gets a page in Hunnicutt's "Abrams - History of the American MBT". Just says:

"In late 1962, the U.S. Armor Association sponsored a competition for a new main battle tank design. The winner, illustrated in the January-February 1963 issue of Armor Magazine, consisted of two tracked units connected and operated in tandem with a two piece gimbal ring type joint. This connection permitted the two units to roll and pitch independently about the axes within the joint. Designed by Robert W. Forsyth and John P. Forsyth, it illustrated the wide range of concepts under consideration at that time. The tank could be broken down into the two units thus meeting the weight requirements for transportation by the aircraft of that time. The vehicle was to be driven by a multifuel piston engine coupled to an electric generator in the rear unit. This provided power to four traction motors driving the sprockets, two located at the rear of the front unit and two at the front of the rear unit. The proposed main armament was carried on the front unit and consisted of a 155mm smooth bore, rocket boosted cannon and a 20mm Hispano-Suiza automatic gun. Provision also was made for the installation of a 7.62mm multibarrel machine gun on the rear unit. The vehicle was manned by a crew of seven with the commander/gunner, the gunner/ loader, and the driver in the front unit and a four man tank support team in the rear. Weight was estimated to range from 24 to 32 tons depending upon the armor protection."

That is pretty neat! I figured the big gun was probably the 152/Shillealegh (sp?) or something like it-
but that co-ax looks more like 40 mm than 20 mm. ( Not that thats a bad thing...) it certainly would
have had ample crew for maintenance.

That yellow Russian track reminds me of the Foremost Chieftain series:
http://www.foremost.ca/index_vehicles.php (http://www.foremost.ca/index_vehicles.php)

AGRA: The Swedish Army bought a pair of CL-70 RATs but the Bv 206 drivetrain was more likely inspired by the later Canadair CL-91 Dynatrac II (aka XM-571).

The Swedes preferred the similarly-powered Snow Trac ST4 to the RAT (as did a lot of Canadians). In effect, Volvo used the layout of the ST4 as the front car of their articulated Bv 202.

Something I did a while back:

Idea was that the rear part would carry troops.  Kind of a MBT and APC in one package.

:)  :) makes more sense than the russian idea of sandwiching 3 troops between the turret-ring & the engine compartment !

Turret doesn't look large enough for the armament.   I'd be interested in finding out more about the ballistics of the 155mm smooth bore "rocket boosted" cannon.  Does anybody know any more?

Fictional, old videogame stuff.

Mortar trailers towed behind SPAAG and LAV.  The tracked combo probably will have to function like an articulated vehicle.

Two element tank FIGURE 1 shows a low silhouette, articulated main battle tank 10 in the gross weight class of about 22 tons. Tank 10 is divided into a leading element 12 and a trailing element 14 so that its gross weight is distributed over a greater area, permitting the tank to operate over terrain, which would otherwise be marginal or impassable for conventional tanks. Leading element 12 serves in the same capacity as a conventional tank; that is, it carries the main armament, here represented by turret 16 and guns 18. Element 12 carries a complement of three crew members. The latter are represented in FIGURE 2 as the tank driver 20, shown in a supine position, a gunner-loader 22, and a tank commander 24.

Trailing element 14 is designed principally to carry tank support personnel, stores, and the tank power plant. The tank support personnel are represented in FIGURE 2 as crew members 26, 28, 30 and 32. Element 14 also carries secondary armament, here represented by an antipersonnel type gun 34 carried in turret 36 (FIGURE 1). Element 14 is also provided with hatch covers, represented by 38, 40, at the sides and rear of the crew compartment, which can be opened for additional support fire by the crew members. Element 14 is also provided with a door (not shown) at the rear of the element through which the crew members can dismount and attend to various tank support activities, such as clearing road blocks, removing mines, detecting and engaging enemy infantry, tank-killer teams, and establishing defensive positions should the tank be immobilized.

Odd - this looks like it intends for the main gun to be a crane, which will ruin the boresighting.

The America tank from the previous page is from the Army Ground Forces Equipment Review Board 1945 report. The tank doesn't have a name & was just a concept idea meant to inspire tank designers to think outside of the box etc.

Articulated Tanks are cool, but how about a subterranean articulated tank! The Ritter Midgard-Schlange was designed by the Germans in 1934 to destroy the Maginot Line fortifications by digging under them & laying explosive charges. Considering how long tunnel boring takes, they might have made it to the Maginot Line just in time for the war to end...

My guess is a semi-mobile coastal defense half-battery, probably constructed in the vicinity of the primary / secondary /tertiary firing positions.

German blueprint HSK 3485, dated 15 June 1943, named Project “NM”, shows a monstrous and ungainly vehicle consisting of three Tiger tanks joined together by I-beam girders. Built atop the I-beam frame sits a warehouse-like structure, concealing three 150 mm cannon-armed turrets. The reasoning behind this design, its purpose, and even which branch of the Wehrmacht it was for, remains a total mystery.
