Next on my bench will be the (im)famous Testor's box-scale Convair C-131.

Mine will be the civilian version, the CV480, but with slight modifications.
I've been wanting to do this one for a while, but the kit is so basic it makes you laugh (then cry). For starters, I don't think there's any clear parts...

Before I start, I have to sort out the decal options. This is because I need to paint the fuselage prior to filling in the windows with glue. I've got two options:
Allegheny Airlines "real world" livery by Draw Decal:

It took me all week to get this far. Monday I painted the gray on the lower fuselage, wings & engines. Tuesday it was the blue on the upper fuselage. Wednesday I did a little touch-up work and painted the horizontal stabs and props. Thursday I filled in the windows with Elmer's Glue. The glue was finally dry enough this morning for me to paint the windows on the inside and button up the fuselage.
It's all downhill from here (riiight).

I'm glad you like it! The windows are actually painted a shade darker (MM Dark Ghost Gray)than the lower fuse (MM Gray Primer). The Elmer's trick is simple, but the results can be on the fragile side. Something to keep in mind when handling the model.
The plan is to apply fuselage stripes before attaching the wings. Hope to have an update in the next day or so.

It turned out I had a little more touch-up painting to do yesterday. I wanted to give the paint a good 24 hours to dry before putting decals on. Hopefully I'll start on the decals later today.

I'm not sure why the paintjob looks so patchy in these shots. It's a lot more uniform seen in person.

This project took longer than expected, but I'm pleased with the results. While U.S. Airways never flew the CV-480/580, their forerunner, Allegheny did. I only did some small mods to the kit. Instead of using the kit's engine decals, I opted to attach props left over from a 1/72 He-219 with the blades clipped to size and add a couple of air scoops to the engine nacelles.

While this Testor's kit is hardly state-of-the-art, I hope this project will help others see that these old kits are definitely worth building. The only other option for a small-scale CV-480 is a resin kit which runs about then times what I paid for this oldie-but-goodie.

From what I gather, this line of kits that Welsh Models cast, form and sell, are mastered by someone else who goes by the name Proteus Models. There's a lot of variants for sale too, apart from this one.

That looks great Brian. Love the engines - they somehow look more powerful with the different spinners.

You've got a good eye, Cliffy! While I swapped out the kit props with those from an He-219 (which has the spinner already molded on), once you square off the tips of the 219's prop blades, the blades of both are close in size.
The way the blue photographed and I think with the next blue scheme I'll lay down some dark gray primer first and see if that helps. One good thing about this project is that it has me putting more thought into the paintwork.
