Title: Bison Patrol
Post by: Kerick on May 09, 2022, 03:23:30 AM
Here's what I'm starting with. It's the old 1956 Revell box scale 1/169th scale Bison bomber. I've had it in the drawer of doom for so long I can't remember where or when I acquired it. I just got it out and decided it's time to do something with it and this would be a great opportunity. I checked some photos and this model is a whiff in a box to begin with. So I'll be adding some lumps and bumps.

Since the GB has started I have removed what remained of the gun turrets, added a "stinger" cone in place of the tail guns and filled in the landing gear openings. More pics as the PSR progresses. I never had the gear or any other parts for it so this will end up on a brass rod when finished.

Too cool! I notice that Revell called this an "IL-38 Bison" ... so NATO codename has to be 'May'  ;D

Also, Revell puts that box-scale at 1/169. Any plans to scale-o-rama your Myasishchev?

The canopy on this one is a total glue bomb so a 1/72nd cockpit and canopy might be a good idea. Iíll have to consider it. I think I have a Skyhawk canopy lying around.

Really interested in this.
I have the 1/72 vac form in the stack-o-shame, mostly because it is a monster.

1/72nd scale would be a real beastie! This aircraft is much larger than I first thought. And with a vacuform you would have your work ďcut outĒ for you!

Not only was the canopy a mess but now it walked off the work desk and disappeared. No real loss at all so Iíll just fill in the opening with plastic and place some blue decal instead. Iím going to try making some bubble windows by heating the end of a clear sprue until it forms a half round shape. Most of the PSR is done except little touch ups.

Out of 'drawer of doom' into the light to become MPA.   Nice for vintage Bison to get a life.

Itís more than about time for it! Iíve almost chosen to cut off the wings for other projects but Iím glad I didnít.

Most PSR is done. Glued white plastic in place of the wind screen a sanded that to the proper shape. I replaced the prop spinner with the nose from an old F-18 to give a more late model shape. Time for antenna and the IFR probe. I made the observation domes seen in most pics by heating the end of a clear sprue until it melts into a rounded dome like shape. Iím going to try the natural metal top and very light grey bottom as seen in most of the Bison pics. I drilled out the engine intakes as they looked terrible. Exhaust is just as bad but if I drill that out it will be a see through engine space. Iíll think of something. I could stuff in bits of black foam to block that. These intakes are round and should be oval anyway. Iíll have to invent a story line to cover that.

I added the parts as I described and then started with some silver paint. Its all one "tone" right now but I'll try varying the shade with flat and gloss on different panels. It worked on the external tanks for an X-15 so it might work here.

All the pictures of a Bison bomber show what appears to be an off white/very light grey underside. It might just be weathered. I might have to mix up something or just go with white. Also, I've already managed to break off the IFR probe. At least I found it on the floor!

Actually a couple areas have some orange peel. Wouldnít make it in a car contest.
The underside paint will cover the worst. Iíll see what flat and gloss coat does.

I was looking at the underside under different lighting today and noticed I could see the shadow of the raised outline for the Russian stars that I had sanded off! The white or very light gray paint should take care of that.

The silver paint is still a little tacky. Iíll have to let it cure some more. I sprayed silver on a scrap of plastic, let it dry a couple days and sprayed it with the white Iím planning to use. Came out a little fishy but maybe letting the silver cure some more and spraying light coats might work.
Title: Re: Bison Patrol

I've been gone the last two days and the silver paint seems much better. I'll give it a few more days and check again.
Title: Re: Bison Patrol
Post by: Kerick on June 14, 2022, 01:29:36 PM
Well, the paint has been an epic fail.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52145659980_b4e994a310_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nrW8Z7)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52145173286_544035052d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nrTDiQ)

The silver paint was still soft and the masking tape I used pulled up the upper surface of the silver. Plus the white seemed to dissolve some of the silver paint. It's hard to see in the pics but the white has all kinds of bubbles and dimples in it. And the white paint was bad when I sprayed it on a couple of missiles I had scratched together. So both of those paint cans are in the trash and the Bison is soaking in brake fluid as I type.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52144149857_7aa30fe3f1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nrNp5v)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52145192243_cf70742c58_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nrTJWF)

I don't know why I didn't trash the whole thing except I'll probably never see one of these kits again.

Strange how Easy Off oven cleaner removed most of the silver but left a slimy residue while the brake fluid removed the slimy residue and the white but has a very slow effect on the silver. Organic chemistry I suppose.

I've seen a couple of pics where the Bison appears to be a light grey on top and white on the bottom I'll have to consider that.

Well it is Soviet so I canít get very imaginative with it. Or I could give some sexy blue, grey and white scheme and say the painter was shot and then sent to Siberia.

Well, the paint has been an epic fail...

Oh, that is brutal! And it was looking so shiningly promising  :(

Fingers crossed to appease those whimsical sprites of chemical interactions.

Please press on ... this concept is too good to abandon (and that kit too rare from the sounds of it)

Iím not giving up although my wife is going in for surgery a week from Thursday so probably not much model time after that. Scratched up a couple of fictitious anti ship missiles and tried to paint them with the same white I have used on other things just fine and that went bad too. I had sprayed them lightly with the white, saw that it was giving little bubbles and dimples so I stopped there. I sanded off the bad spots then sprayed a completely different paint and the unsanded parts wrinkled up like an old prune. Youíd think I would learn by now! So that went into the trash too. No more painting until I get good hobby paints. The Bison is stripped as well as itís going to be and needs sanding to remove leftovers and smooth the surface again. Good thing I donít mind PSR. The surface of that thing is so many colors right now itís crazy.

Sounds like there's still release agent on the surface of the plastic, or it's too slick & resistant for paint to adhere to. You may want to sand or lightly scour the whole thing.

Straight up polystyrene back from who knows when. I donít get it at all. Never had these problems before and now I canít get anything right! I shouldnít say anything as the helicopters have gone well so far. Unless you count the first attempt at the Apache. That was a do over for several reasons.
The Bison is back to its original green color and Iím rebuilding the missiles after that fail. I just canít believe these paints canít work together. Same brand and everything. Itís nutso!!!

A couple of pics to catch up.

Back to green plastic. I have since sanded with a much finer paper and it looks much better.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52154935830_c4e2dce176_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nsKFny)

I built two completely fictitious missiles out of the forward 3/4 of F-104 tanks, wings from other missiles and small LGB fins. Green and black was the grossest color combo I've found so I went with that. I brush liquid glue over the Bondo putty as its porous and soaks up the first coat of paint and shows up otherwise. The glue acts like a primer, sealing the surface.

That is some serious chem-strip and PSRing!

Masked off and sprayed on the ďcamo greyĒ that sure has a lot of brown in it. Iíll call it the Russian attempt at hemp. Most of it looks pretty good but there is a couple of small wrinkles that I may or may not mess with. Just ready to put this one on the shelf on a stand asap.
Title: Re: Bison Patrol
Post by: Kerick on June 24, 2022, 01:07:04 PM
Here are some photos of progress so far. The paint went on pretty well. Only a couple spots look troublesome. These I will just spray paint in a jar and use a brush to touch up. Just the usual spots where the grey/gray crept under the masking tape and two spots where it seemed to pull back as it dried.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52167918377_b8ed3c932f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ntUdCz)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52168943191_b98d787ee0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ntZtgM)

No idea what caused that. The only thing I can think of is the fact that I sprayed over gloss white instead of flat. The rest looks good. It wasn't going to be a contest winner so I'll just touch it up and call it good enough for government work! Here's the overall look.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52167918447_786db8d84f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ntUdDM)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52169188689_0f8a8ba05c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nu1Jfv)

Its like a fish, darker on top and white on the bottom.
Here's a closer look at the lumps and bumps I added. Completely fictional yet provides some visual interest. Of course there is the usual fuel tank half, some parts from a Bf-109 kit, hump shaped pieces cut from a small aircraft wheel and plastic strips similar to photos I saw of real Bisons.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52169188634_2cf6c1a84a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nu1Jey)

Any one know what might aproximate the gross green color the Soviets used on dielectric panels and radomes? I'm thinking of that trapezoid panel that's always on the fin of MiG 21s and others.

And BTW, I bought a bag of new spray can nozzles of different types on Amazon so I don't have to waste good paint because of clogged nozzles. I think sometimes the can sprays poorly because the face of the nozzle gets dried paint on it even after spraying upside down. The paint comes out but the pattern and droplet size sucks. Sometimes a new nozzle helps, sometimes not.
I might actually finish this one on time!!!

Touch ups are completed and the radomes painted. I found some European dark green that looks ugly enough. Plus a black anti glare panel. Not bad. I need to spray gloss and then decals.
Title: Re: Bison Patrol
Post by: Kerick on June 28, 2022, 12:14:26 PM
Did the touch up and detail paint and then sprayed on some clear gloss. I was holding my breath the whole time. it came out like it was supposed to and here's what it looks like.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52178557466_565b59b616_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nuQKg9)

Busted out the decals and micro set and sol. The only trouble maker was the set of numbers for the tail. They each broke into three pieces but I was able to push them together enough to be usable.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52178557416_e10a877abe_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nuQKfh)

The others all went on great. It took several pieces to put together the cockpit windshield. I discovered several spots where there was spots from my dirty fingers or lint had settled on the wet clear coat. Some very careful scraping removed most of them without exposing the plastic.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52177528922_7eab18e82f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nuKtvC)

Here it is temporarily placed on its stand. Soon I'll have to find a shelf wide enough to place it on. Some more detail painting around the engine exhaust and some flat clear and its done.

Still awaiting installation of its new ďKitchenaidĒ antiship missiles it will soon be ready to patrol the oceans surrounding its home.

Not bad for an old Revell kit circa 1956! Especially since the aircraft wasn't seen until the Moscow display in 1955.
I'm calling it the Myasishchev 3M-F "Bison D" dedicated MRA version of the M-4 bomber. Sounds good anyway!

That came out looking so much better looking than when you started the project.

Remembering green Bisons around the neighborhood back when.   This one is sooo much better in color, finish, outfitting.  :-*

That's quite an end result! Definitely made a silk purse out of a old bison's ear!

Thanks everyone!

The club I go to (IPMS Duneland) is having a contest and swap meet on Oct 15 and I'm going to swamp the whif table with this and several others.

Another club member bought two boxes of old models at a previous swap meet in Crystal Lake and has given me a bunch of wreckage to try and make something out of. I now have several old 1/72nd scale Monogram A-1H Skyraiders in my possession. I'm imagining a Skyraider biplane on floats to start with. Then maybe a zwilling. I have to be on the lookout for propellors as the originals were all broken off ages ago. First I need to finish the WW2 attack choppers. Then the RF-23.
