2014 GB Vote
« on: December 09, 2013, 03:29:35 AM »
Ok folks,

Time to vote on what Group Builds (GBs) you would like to see in 2014 (or at least the first half-ish of).  I have listed all the suggestions that have been made in 2013 so far (I think).  If anyone wants clarification on any of the suggestions just ask - either I or one of those who originally suggested it can step in to explain.

The poll is up for 14 days.  You have 4 votes so cast them carefully.  You can however also change your mind afterwards if need be.

Now, get voting!!!

Regards,

Greg

My votes:

WWI GB (includes Extended and Alternate WWIs)
Snoops, Sensors, Spooks, & Spies etc GB
Book/Movie GB
Spat/Unspat My Ride GB

So, we have a Space GB, an ISR GB, an Unarmed GB, an SAR GB, and a Trainer GB proposal.  Bunch of pacifists.  ;)

We'll have to make up for it in 2015.  :D

Only voted for two of them as not much else interested me, but at least one choice is up at the top at the moment.  I've got just the thing for the build too, a 1/72 BAe 844.  Extra fuselage (A310) for it arrived on Friday so I can start my build planning  ---- I'll build it any which way the vote goes --

Nothing formal in the last 12 mths that I could find.  I had to draw a line somewhere wrt entries.  Besides, such a GB would be difficult from the perspective of profiles and stories.

Maybe we don't have to wait that long ... I mean, SAR can be dangerous; an air force can't train without weapons; if ALIENS taught us anything it taught us to go in peace but be armed for bear; and 'alone unarmed and unafriad' (sorry RF101ers) is passe. Anyone for a nuclear armed, SCRAMjet powered Pilatus RF9C in RAAF colours?  >:D

Let's Go Nuclear
Snoops, Sensors, Spooks & Spies, etc.
Books/Movies (& I'm kinda hoping that includes Games)

I also tried to vote for "Disbanded Nations" but that took me over the 4-choice limit.

Cool suggestions

WWI - It'll be an easy hit to make the Meng Char 2C into a combat ready monster for the 1919 offensive

Space - I appear to have some sort of Martian hover tank lurking in my stash  8)

April's fool - I already have a build planned up that would fit in nicely with this; M4A3E2 HVSS (105 mm) slap some 3 AD markings on it and claim it as part of the Zebra mission from April 1945. who would ever know...  ;D

Punked - hmmm, two minds on this one TBH, I have a half finished steampunk build and this would be a good inspiration to actually finish the thing, but if I have to start something new? Sheesh, that'll be tough as I'm running out of space on the bench as it is  :-\

Vote submitted.

Space - nothing on hand, but I do have some ideas bouncing around my brain housing group...

Cross Dressing Schemes - maybe this will push me to actually make either my HMX-1 "Marine One" V-22, or my Canadian SAR V-22, or my USCG V-22, or...

Snoops, Sensors, Spooks & Spies - I've got that 1/72 SR-75 waiting to be scaled up to the One TRUE ScaleTM and detailed as a strategic recon bird

Disaster/Disaster Recovery - see above mention of Canadian SAR V-22 and USCG V-22 and add a Merlin in that gorgeous Canadian yellow scheme to the mix as possible projects.

Reminds me of this scene from the Life of Brian:

Punked GB (includes Steam Punk, Diesel etc..)
There's all sorts of "punks" around nowadays.
"Cyberpunk" could take us to all sorts of things that are not here quite yet. Virtual or physical - but space doesn't seem to be a prominent part of the genre.
"Teslapunk" ... I'm not quite sure about this one. Sounds electric.
I recall an airplane drawing(?) that people wanted to call dieselpunk but I thought it looked too modern for that - and proposed "Kerosenepunk"

I'm sure there's more.

Thanks everyone for voting - looks like the top 4 choices are:

  • Space GB (both Scifi and Real)
  • WWI GB (includes Extended and Alternate WWIs)
  • Snoops, Sensors, Spooks, & Spies etc GB
  • Book/Movie GB

We will go with these for now - another GB vote will be held later in 2014 to decide what to do after these.

I will also post shortly a suggested calendar for these.

Ok folks, following on from the vote for your preferred GBs for 2014, here is a first stab at some proposed GB dates:

First of all, I am assuming the current "Clear Your Workbench" GB continues until EO Jan 2014.  I have also made most of the GBs approximately 3 mths in duration.  I have noted that up until now, most GBs have been shorter and typically require an extension to be granted.  By making them longer, perhaps this can be avoided.  The downside of this though is that it becomes harder to fit more in…unless we have some overlap.  As this stage, my proposed dates are:

  • Space GB (both Scifi and Real): 1 Feb - 30 Apr
  • Snoops, Sensors, Spooks, & Spies etc GB: 1 May - 28 Jul
  • WWI GB (includes Extended and Alternate WWIs): 28 Jul – 11 Nov, thus matching the real start/end dates of the war
  • Book/Movie GB: TBD

You will note that the Book/Movie GB has a TBD (To Be Determined) status.  If you are happy with some GB overlaps, this can be scheduled in somewhere.  I am open to comments and suggestions so please speak up.

Regards,

Greg

I would imagine not everyone will do all the GB's, my target it to complete one of them without getting distracted by something else.  I would think a week overlap would be fine and even the first one could start say mid-January because not everyone is doing the 'Clear your Workbench' GB but could be lining themselves up for the first one of the year.

There is no such voting.  The only thing "To Be Determined" is the timing of the Book/Movie GB.  No-one is being asked to vote on anything anymore as the poll is closed.

My new proposed dates with some GB overlap are:

  • Space GB (both Scifi and Real): 15 Jan - 15 Apr (possible extension to 30 Apr if demand requires it)
  • Snoops, Sensors, Spooks, & Spies etc GB: 1 Apr - 30 Jun (with possible extension to 15 Jul if demand requires it)
  • Room for possible short, 1 month GB - not yet defined but we can decide closer to time:  1 Jul - 28 Jul
  • WWI GB (includes Extended and Alternate WWIs): 28 Jul – 11 Nov, thus matching the real start/end dates of the war
  • Book/Movie GB: 1 Nov - 31 Dec (with possible extension to 31 Jan 2015)

Note that I still like the idea of having some sort of "clear your Workbench" GB at the end of each year in order to provide some impetus to finish off projects.  I will go with what people want here though.

Please voice your thoughts re proposed dates.  Nothing (except the WWI GB) is set in stone yet.

I see the proposed motion for the upcoming GB schedule and hereby second it.

Also, I rather enjoy having the "Clear Your Workbench" GB at the end of the year - a sort of unofficial official close to the year.

Agree with all of the above...

Whats a good one month GB?  ??? "Model in a month?" like SSM? Single type? like say F-14 Tomcat? OOB/Paint?

That might work.  I am open to suggestions for others...

taiidantomcat, is/was (it's been too long since I last visited) a regular at Starship Modeler, so I would suggest that is the answer; especially as they have a regular/standing "Model in a Month" challenged (I think) rather than comp.

Awesome place, with many brilliant modellers (some of whom visit here).

Seriously, if you haven't been there, go visit! You'll see some familiar names & (unless you get some of them started on the angle of the mandibles on the Millenium Falcon or the true colours of Star Trek ships) they are as friendly as the guys here.
