The Vampire (and Meteor) lacking range in 1946, Supermarine and De Havilland joined Spitfire and Vampire elements to get the mixed propulsion best fighter 1947:

Just to compare, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk25 (of 1947 too) lacked a free nose:
