Title: 1/72 Fairmile Dog boat MTB
Post by: Buzzbomb on April 28, 2017, 09:02:02 PM
So where to start.
I am a fan of IMA (international Models Asia) kits, Russ does some rare stuff and his kits are nice. Not for the faint hearted nor the assembler as they seriously are for experienced modellers as you have to provide a reasonable amount of your own detail.. but the basics are great.
so he had on his catalog a 1/72 Fairmile MTB, which I got hold of an early release version. This is still pretty much in pre-production I think, but if interested.. contact IMA.
A nice clear render of a Dogboat

Typical of most WW2 Brit Coastal craft, good quality pix of the real deal are not exactly awash on the interwebnet.

So first up you get a big box of well packaged bits
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/misc/fairmile/fairmile_1.JPG)
So.. .whipping it out and comparing to a half hearted start on the Airfix E-boat to measure up
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/misc/fairmile/fairmile_2.JPG)
It is  big sucker

So to work, if nothing else having the hull already completed is a A++++++ bonus, next to no time to take shape
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/misc/fairmile/fairmile_3.JPG)

of course there is detail that has to be added
The Bridge

completely detail the .5 in Vickers AA gun turrets
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/misc/fairmile/fairmile_23.JPG)

Oh and then the brass rail on the Bandstand for the Oerlikons

We are progressing !

I have his 1/35 Mantis Experimental Bren Gun Carrier and 1/35 Comress -75

A buy like that would likely be the end of my marriage, then again if they ever do a SGB in 1/72 it my be worth it.

It would have to be an SGB, nothing less.

thanks guys.
This build has been going on for a bit of time, I am not as quick as this might appear. Just slack in posting
I have scratch built the carley raft and added some splinter padding, which was fairly common.
The Mast array is from soldered brass. Plastic or resin just do not cut it when you start rigging things up.

Ok once most of the hard yards are done you can start gettting things together and squirt on a bit of paint.
this is a test fit of sub assemblies.

Love this boat.. it is big, it is beefy and looks tough. As well it should, this fitout with the two auto loader 6 Pounders was put together so the Brit MTB's could go toe to toe with he later German S-boats. It was discovered early that firing .303 Lewis guns at boats armed with 20mm Cannon just makes them angrier.

Nice job, so far, Brian! :)

I'd only really be interested in a 1/35 full styrene (PE & some resin would be OK) kit of the Dog Boat.

This is looking awesome. Seems like a pretty nice kit, overall.

If money were no object (/checks news, nope, still not the case), I'd get one of the 1/35 Elco kits and modernize it with lots of AM goodies as another brown water/littoral/riverine craft.

This is a pre-production kit so some stuff is not there, so a lot of scratch building but for a Fairmile D in this scale there is only this and the Coastal Craft offering.

So some more progress
Scratchbuild the autoloaders for the 6 Pounders
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/misc/fairmile/fairmile_16.JPG)

working up the rigging and stanchions. I am working out and back, with the stanchions/wire rail being the last thing on. Fo'c'sle is almost ready for a dull coat, then work back to the stern.

Guy would probably know, I think the Buffer would be kicking some ar$e for that rope coil  :)

Well, this is pretty much it as far as this build goes

it is a beyatch to photographs at it is quite sizeable.
Pretty happy they way it come out and it certainly looks like a Fairmile

Cheers

yeah I like that - nice one Brian! Nice subtle weathering too. Soft sea men though....all got their hands in their pockets  ???

The Buffer'd be more p!$$ed about the hands in the pockets than the ropes!

Great build, Brian! :) :)

The Dog boats are right up there as one of my favourite naval vessels.

Very nice! Makes me want to get one of the larger scale Elco 80 footers.

I don't visit the other areas of the site as often as I should or else I would have come across this build earlier than I did. Truly a very, very impressive piece of work.  The work in progress pics are a masterclass in detailing and finishing. Bravo good Sir!  :)

What a superb Dogboat sir ;) ;) 8) 8)
Great workmanship on display here, well done ;) ;)
If he was any sort of Buffer, they'd be done for hands in pockets, the ropes, and standing 'round like 'shags on a rock' ;D ;D
