Title: Almost a De Havilland DH88 Comet - Flash Project
Post by: Antonio Sobral on February 09, 2015, 06:17:02 AM
Hi guys

This was a “very-fast-kind-of-weekend” modeling project.

Actually call it a project is an abuse, since it was just a feeble excuse to test the metallizing powders
from Uschi Van der Rosten (www.uschivdr.com (http://www.uschivdr.com)).

To start with, a cheap, simple, old and rather weak kit of a really beautiful and well known airplane:

Oddly enough most of the parts did not fit properly, so I had to convince them the hard way  ;)

After some additional fitting, the basic work was done:

A distant relative to the original DH88, this one goes by the name of Comet 2K, the fastest airplane of the universe and beyond...

The base was rather simple. Half of a chocolate egg for kids filled with sand, to add weight, and the handle of a plastic brush bent with hot air:

After some putty and sanding:

Just for fun, I added a minimal interior:

After painted:

With the canopy in place, there is not much to see, but that’s the modeler’s curse! :)

After some more putty and sanding, I finished with a coat of Alclad Black Primer, according to the instructions:

After drying, I polished it with an old sock, and it was ready to receive the metallizing powder.

In the meanwhile, the base was painted in a “naive” style:

Back to the plane, I applied the Uschi powder all over the plane with a cotton q-tip and afterwards I polished it
with some more clean q-tips, finishing with my faithful old sock.

To finish it, just a hint of markings, with some Portuguese Air Force decals.

Final photos taken outside, to try to better portrait the metal finish and also to let it roam and wander freely!

Je suis blown away. Awesome work using only the parts in the kit.

I also like the palm trees. We got another 10-15 CM of snow today and its is -15C.

Wow, very wonderful!!! :-* :-* :-*

For any questions, just ask!
- What is the name of the design bureau that invented it? (De Havilland? De Havilland Canada? De Havilland Portugal? Sobral Avião?)...
-  In which year was it built for "Real"? (like 1936 as Comet derivative? or 2036 for exploring outer space?).
- On which planet did this take place?
 ;) :icon_music: :icon_fsm: ;)

The man who's built a Jet-Comet - need I say more?
Antonio, you're great!
(But I miss the clefts for the landing gear covers.)

Would you please give a report of your experience with the Uschi-polish-metal-powder!?

Hi guys

Thanks for the nice comments.

As as promised, here are the answers to the questions: ;D
- What is the name of the design bureau that invented it? The tenebrous SoMaMo Corporation (Sobral Maniac Modelling)
after buying the design patent from the heirs of the de Havilland familiy, of course. They may be crazy, but legal crazy :)
-  In which year was it built for "Real"? Reality is such a strong word...but let us assume somewhere around 2020.
- On which planet did this take place? by the looks of the pilot, I have to say Terra (not Nova, the plain old one ;)).

Regarding Norbert's question about the Uschi Van der Rosten powders, I would say that they are really easy to use.
The application is fast and the final results in terms of "shininess" are proportional to the base coat applied
The more polished the base coat the better. And gloss back is a must for a true "chrome-like" finish.
The downsize is that the handling is a little bit more tricky and delicate than with Alclad, for example.
But the easiness of application, without airbrush a brush, and the absence of smell, is a strong plus in my book,
so this is something that I will definitely use a lot more in the future, especially for small parts and panels.

Cheers!

Antonio

Yes? Is it already possible to invest massively in this great company (that will obviously rule the World's aviation soon)? ;)

May I imagine the Zwilling of your marvel? (as a forefather of it, dated 1944)? :P
